He's a good boy

Our five month old larger mix-breed rescue doesn’t have a mean bone in his body, however, he chews on furniture & clothing and bites on our hands. grrr We adopted him almost two months ago. Jude is a major repeat offender with his rough play biting and we have all been working so hard to stop this like you wouldn’t believe! I do hold his muzzle but I never thought about holding his collar as well. I will definitely have to try that. And you’re right about responding immediately too. He’s a derpy sweetheart, and I don’t want to wish the puppy days away, but truthfully I will be SO happy to have him fully housebroken and to have him stop biting!

I have used that method with my GSDs. GSDs are like little piranhas.

Nose licks, appeasement. If you grab their mouth for puppy biting, you risk conditioning a negative association with human hands reaching for their mouths. It’s very important for many vet care procedures that require a hand reaching for the mouth to predict great stuff is coming. In contrast, I work desensitizing & counterconditioning my dogs to reaching for their mouths. A human hand reaching for my puppy and dog’s mouths predicts treats are coming not an unpleasant muzzle squeeze is coming.

I went the opposite direction with puppy biting. I work with German Shepherd on how to bite, to understand pressure, appropriateness and situational awareness instead and have had fantastic results. In my experience, this is part of a phase that needs time and development, and if managed, will fade as they start to grow. I have watched all your shorts with an interesting finding. Even though this breed, as individuals, are separated by hundreds of years breeding line splits, they are still fundamentally alike in regards to behavior and possible still connected a molecular level. There isn’t a circumstance you have featured that I haven’t experience with my current GSD or can’t relate to. Zeus is great! Love your channel!

Have rehabbed many dogs.. found yelping high pitched and removing yourself or the pup to time out space works wonders Found using that for dogs that take it roughly often helps too Speak THEIR language best you can so they understand ❤
