The world is a mess, and it's easy to worry about where it's all going. But just zoom out for a moment, try to see it as God does. While He absolutely hates sin and hates to see us suffer, He is so much bigger than all of our problems. He knows we have no need to fear. Our biggest threat is our own will, but so long as we choose God, literally nothing else matters. Remembering that can reduce your worry and stress to zero.

Commentaries like this are more reasons I’m so grateful that the Lord brought me home to the Catholic Church after a lifetime of being a devout Protestant. I’m 56 and have been Catholic for just over a year. I missed so much, but am so grateful to be home now.

@@user-lf6nh5cj6p Catholicism has given me a framework for being a devout disciple of Jesus that I never previously had. It stopped being about my intellect and brought me to Christ in spiritual and physical ways that no Protestant tradition can come near. I pray you will find the same richness of relationship with Jesus that I have.

If you've ever spent time with the poor or in other countries with people who Americans deem as living "third-world" and some homeless, you will see they are rich in heart and feel real empathy and feel actual joy. My sibling went thru hell before he died and he never stopped that joy. His life gave us so much joy! When ive been heart broken, he still reminds us of JOY! It's unbelievable to feel Gods love and joy of the reality of heaven through the deepest pain and tears. These days are tough but love is forever! Eternity is larger than anytime man has lived.

Not so sure about that part of the third world folks being all joyful and full of empathy.. poor generalization. I live in one of “those countries” and that true joy and empathy are hard to come by. I know you mean well but your statement is devisory between classes and not really realistic.

I don't agree that poorest are happier and have more empathy. I am helping animals and from what I can see big percentage of animal abuse happening in "third-world" countries. Those some horendous acts that it is hard to read about.

Maybe if you get the chance of spending some days living with a poor family you'll understand better what Fr Columbia tried to say. I appreciate very much your effort in helping animals, that is an act of love. So many horendous things still happening in this world. I am glad you are making a difference. God Bless you on that !

I hear you. Continue to trust in God & ask Him to send the help you need. I too was depressed for decades… then one day a few years ago I finally broke down & said ‘Ok God, not my will, but Your Will’… then baby step by baby step by continuing to trust in God even when my ‘feelings’ weren’t on board, I’ve witnessed little miracles & an incremental lifting of my joylessness & a responding increase in little moments of joy… please believe it can happen for you. God is true to His word. Trust Him, even when you don’t ‘feel’ like it, & you will see things change. I’ll keep you in prayer too.

Fr Columba, today you changed my mindset and ultimately my heart. I absolutely believe that the Holy Spirit has worked through you today. I have been so overwhelmed by all the awful social media coverage of gender identity issues surrounding especially children and schools, it had taken over my entire thought process. Your words today have changed my complete life at this moment. I try to be a faithful Catholic and I love Jesus with all my heart but I was so caught up in the worldly aspect of this, that I had forgotten that God has this and everything in his hand, He will take care of everything, I don’t need to worry, especially as I can do nothing without Him. Thank you, thank you and God Bless 🙏🙏🙏

I suppose the fact that God has known from all eternity every single thing that would happen, it would make it rather odd for him to start feeling disappointed or angry or sad, or anything like that now, nothing is any surprise to Him. He knows exactly what’s gonna happen everywhere, every time, to everyone, and the consequences.

Ah, thank you for I think God has got to have great humor especially if He decides to listen to the ignorant questions I ask. I am 78 and wondering about things - of God and Heaven, etc, that a 6 yr old would know. He is likely telling someone to listen because I am at “it” again. He must be helping because I’m still hanging on to the Hope of Eternal Salvation. Please, Lord, may my Hope especially for others be known and they be with You when they leave this life.

I hear this often that we are to be joyful. How do we think of this in terms of depression, anxiety disorders, and trauma? I’ve been depressed for years and widowed for three years. How do I find this joy?
@markpatterson2517
@markpatterson2517 2 ай бұрын
Can you get your depression treated? Depression is like wearing dark shady glasses. Your mood colors your perceptions and judgements. Things feel darker than they really are. The tragic shadows of the past keep coming to the memory even though the present moment isn't too bad. Or fear anticipates bad things in the future that might not occur. Anxiety brings unlikely future events to experience in the present ahead of time when they often don't occur. Looking at life through clear lenses is better than looking at life through either dark lenses or rose colored lenses. The latter are like Polyannas. Everything is peachy keen to them. It's the other extreme of depression, ie, hypomania. Being middle of the road is best, neither too low nor too high. The bad things that happened to you are not a reflection of you. They don't make you bad. You don't necessarily deserve them unless of course you caused them. Even then you don't have to beat yourself up over it for the rest of your life. There is forgiveness, even self forgiveness. Likewise, when good things happen to us we feel good about ourselves, but we shouldn't unless we caused them. We should feel fortunate or have gratitude instead of feeling proud. And when bad things happen to us we shouldn't feel the opposite of proud, ie, self deprecating, dejected, or self loathing. When we succeed at something, instead of simply feeling satisfied, we also feel self gratified or proud. Too bad we don't just feel grateful, because when we fail at something, the opposite occurs, ie, we feel self dissatisfied, dejected, or self deprecating. What I'm getting at is we wrongly get down on ourselves when bad things happen to us or when we fail at things. If we wouldn't feel proud when good things happen to us or when we succeed, then we wouldn't feel self deprecating when bad things happen to us or when we fail. If we would simply feel satisfied and grateful instead of self gratified or proud when good things happen or when we succeed, then we wouldn't go to the opposite extreme when the opposite happens to us. Some humble people are able to feel grateful when misfortune comes their way. "Things could have been worse", they say. Or they say, "At least we still have our health or family or friends", or whatever they are grateful for. There's a difference between being depressed and poor in spirit. Depressed people feel a humiliation. A poor in spirit person is humble, but not humiliated. Maybe you can transform your depression into a poor in spiritedness. The next step would be to count your blessings for what you haven't lost, ie, feel gratitude. This might give you a glimmer of hope for more grace or good or gifts to come your way. Hope is the antithesis or the opposite or remedy to the hopeless feeling in depression. It's a better feeling than self gratification or pride. You can't have hope without faith since faith is the assurance or confidence behind hope. Don't feel bad about yourself when you try and fail. Some things are not in your control. You can't be blamed for that. Whatever you do do it with good will or good intentions, act in good faith, and put good effort into it. If you succeed, then be satisfied and grateful, but not self gratified or proud. If you fail, it was because of your circumstances were outside of your control. Be satisfied that you had good will, acted in good faith, and put good effort into it. The successful inner man is the one who has good will, acts in good faith, and tries or puts good effort into what he does regardless if he succeeds or not, because there are circumstances he can't control, but at least he did his good part. He can feel good about that, doing his part. Also keep in mind as you put good effort into fighting your depression that not everything inside your head is in your control either. That's why getting help from professionals is also important. Let's say there was a carpenter who was determined to build his own house with his own two hands. Let's say he ran into some electrical or plumbing problems. There's no shame in him contracting an electrician or a plumber to help him finish the house build is there? Like the carpenter do your part, and let the professionals do their part to help you. Part of doing your part is eating healthy, exercising, socializing, getting involved in things, and helping others.

Depression is a heavy cross to carry. I have depression and anxiety disorder. Meditation helps and so does prayer. It comforts me to know that my depression and anxiety are only temporary afflictions. There will be no mental or physical illness in Heaven. That thought helps me to carry my daily cross.
