I taught my puppy to wait the ok for eating, exiting the crate, or getting Toys. A way to teach focus may be to give the ok when they make the eye contact on you, rather than the food or toys.

Hey cristin! Ah you’re so lucky!! Having a food motivated dogs is sooo good for lead walking!! Use high rewards, reward him checking in to you alll the time at the beginning! Also use his dinner at home to teach that heel position! It always helps teaching the dog where we want them to walk! As always thank you so much for your comment 🖤

This is because the environment is to rewarding for your dog so it cancels out your reward. Your award effectively isn’t as good as the environment! You need to up the reward AND lower the level of excitement your dog has for a distraction by making the environment more boring. Do this by teaching lots of games, obedience and focus!! Be more fun than the environment :) hope this helps :)

Thanks for the advice. I found the 'changing direction' really made sense to me because whenever my horse would act up in the riding arena usually when I was working him in a straight line, I would then start changing direction every few seconds and it was then that he had to focus on where he was going and listening to me instead of focusing on trying to buck me off :0

Hi lee! It really doesn’t matter what you use. The most important tool is patience and persistence. It takes the time because we are trying to create habits against the dogs natural desires. Work really hard for a month and then check your progress! Btw I literally just use any collar or lead. It’s the training. I wouldn’t use a harness though it’s a lot harder to guide the dog where you want to go especially when changing direction and of course harnesses are designed for dogs to pull!

He is not treat driven at all, his ball is the only thing he will focus on. Any tips on using a ball as a reward? Lead pulling is the only thing I have struggled to train him not to do and it’s so frustrating

@TheCanineCoachDogTraining

Definitely! A standard collar is best!! It’s much easier to guide and control the dog from the neck than it is on a harness which is either in the middle of there back or lower chest

Trying it all 🙌 I have a 4 month old Rottweiler who's very smart & sometimes a bit overexcited. The trainer in his current puppy class wants him to use a gentle leader.. I wasn't a huge fan of the idea though- currently he's in a flat buckle collar and only pulls when he sees someone or something he really wants to get to.. which can be a bit dangerous for me when the sidewalks get icy over here in Canada 😆

Oh wow! You’re so far away! I’m glad my video found you!! :) the most important part of teaching a dog to walk nicely on the lead is conditioning the tension! We need to help the dog become calm and We need the dog to respond to that feeling of a small bit of tension without conflict! You should take a look at my latest video as well as you see me actually go through the process with a dog that pulls!!

Our dog is a collie lab cross, 7 year old and a rescue and he is awful on the lead. We have a harness and halter which has improved massively but he gets used to it then pulls again and I mean lunges forward. He's a full male and has to scent mark everywhere and a very anxious male that is not treat motivated at all. He fixates on cats, birds you name it and struggle to get him to focus on us because he doesn't bother with treats. He wasn't trained as a pup so I'm hoping the change in direction will help on walka
@TheCanineCoachDogTraining

How do you get to the point of no longer needing treat motivation?
@TheCanineCoachDogTraining
@TheCanineCoachDogTraining 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Erin! You get to this point when the dog fully, 100% knows the heel command on the verbal command without a lure! Because when you’re at that point the dogs reward is the freedom of walking and the alternative is you apply the tension and the dog no longer walks. We are conditioned the pup to enjoy the feeling of a loose lead. Loose lead = freedom tension = stop

you need to organise some walks with another dog so that you can control the environment and teach the dog principles. its hard to teach in changing distracting environments! you need to set up the scenario you are tring to fix and repeatedly go through that scenario to show the dog how to act. time and patience.. but you can do it!!

Hi. I have a huge problem with my puppy. He is 4 month old and he is something like shepherd crossbreed. I did all your techniques and it works perfectly at home and i did focus training really well on the outside too.. but leash walking is really really frustrating-he mostly doesnt want to walk at all he just sits down and dont want to move- when he wants he is ok and he follows good and isnt pulling.. but this sitting down is really starting to be frustrating and i lose my patience rapidly :( I really intensively worked with him focus and leashing at home for 1 month and i dont see much improvements Also he hasnt got anything which is super uber motivating him.. food works the best but he isnt all the crazy excited about it

100%!!! It is definitely possible but it is not as easy as training a puppy! You will need patience! You need to figure out what your dog absolutely loves so he can work for that! I.e a nice bit of chicken! And then you need to slowly teach principles of obedience and slowly introduce distractions
