How to Strip Paint from Wooden Furniture

When I brought this old painted wooden dresser home from the Restore a couple of months ago I had NO idea what I would find underneath all that paint. I'm still SHOCKED by the grain I uncovered after removing the paint. I had to prep the dresser, apply stripper and removed all the paint before treating the entire piece of furniture with tung oil. I love how a thrifted treasure can be such a work of art with a little elbow grease!

I’m furniture painter, the only time I paint furniture like this is when the veneer is beyond repair. In some cases I go with the two tones and they come out beautifully. I use the same stripper and it’s best to leave overnight. Great video... refreshing indeed!

Omg you are a life saver! I HATE that literally almost every home for sale on the market, people thinking painting their old cabinets WHITE is OK. Like. If you have a good colored wood, DO NOT COVER THAT UP! Wood is so beautiful! You save me lots of time brainstorming when I decide on my new house. Plus all white in a home makes it look sterile and lab-like. Gross!!!

Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included kzfaq.infoUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.

WOW! What an outstanding beautiful job!! This morning, I wanted to cry, after I'd begun to strip my dresser from its white chalk paint! "It's too much a huge job," I said. But 3 years ago, It was my own idea to paint them! I've changed my mind and want my wood-look back! You've given me hope!! Thanks!! I think I can do this...Let's hope. You made it seem so easy!!

You're so right! After 'flirting' with chalk painted/'shabby chic' furniture makeovers for years, I'm now the happy owner of a $15.00 Goodwill walnut bow front dresser with claw feet that needs just minor cleaning/polishing! Also, refinishing an antique mahogany drop leaf table with deep red/purple hues. Beautiful table, but too "old-fashioned" for my good friend's liking so...Thank you! NanaAnn

When fixing loose glue sections in old furniture that is older than say 1950s it's wise to check what kind of glue was used. Most of the time it won't be white wood glue, but bone glue. You can use a heat gun to cause the glue to become fluid again and then add some more bone glue in the shrunken wood to glue the dove tails, side boards, joints etc. Especially in old chairs that method can fix a wobbly leg without doing anything else but heating up the joint and letting it cool back down. The joints are stronger than white wood glue and they can be reheated and refitted indefinitely without having to break apart joints, sanding away the plastic left over from white wood glue. Most old veneer is glued with bone glue. If you have a loose piece, heat it up with a piece of cloth and a regular hot iron. It will be flat and strong again. You can buy bone glue pellets on ebay or in many places and buying one pound of it will last you a lifetime (in dried condition it never goes bad, you just have to plan a bit more when you want to use it - check some videos on youtube on how to use it). Bone glue is truly an amazing tool for fixing old furniture.

How did that end up working? I just read that they changed the formula sometime last year or so and it's nowhere near as good now. Sucks, because it seemed great and videos and articles from only a couple of years ago now recommended it so highly. When it was good though, based on most reviews I see now. Apparently it used to smell great and work well and now it stinks and doesn't work.

Yup, I was going to say the same thing. Sides of the drawers and bottom edges on the front drawer panels. But other than, that how lucky she was with the wood in that piece. And the matched grain in the veneer on the drawers. Stunning. I wish I could go cheap furniture hunting and refurbish for my house (inherited childhood home), but I have all the "modern" furniture that was here when I was a kid and all of the antique pieces too ...... bought on the cheap, but nice pieces. I don't have room for anymore furniture ..... but it would be fun to do.

Furniture I paint: beyond repair veneer, pine, sometimes oak (like the fadish oak from the 80/90s) or particale board. Furniture I don't paint: mid century wood furniture, antiques, mahogany, maple, ect. That's another way of saying I support your decision to strip the paint. I think you made a wise choice and did this piece justice. I'm like you, I love painted furniture, but when it's appropriate. When I see painted antiques, I like to strip it to see what I am working with.

I always always sand the top of any furniture I'm working on. That determines whether I paint the piece or I let the glorious wood come through. I've restored a bird's eye maple dresser, a gorgeous British Walnut cabinet and an antique Tiger Wood humidor cabinet. All of my pieces had been stained so dark (cherry, black) that you couldn't see the grain.

One comment here Citrus strip works like this. Citrus strip strips one layer of paint at a time . It is good for furniture because you don’t really find that many coats of paint on furniture. . I use half goo gone and half Acetone mix to keep the stripper wet . This does not hurt the wood

I crackle painted an armoir that had a waterfall original finish that was a part of my parents original bedroom set-think 1940’s. Well now I’m in the process of TRYING to remove to crackle, hoping to strip crackle without removing the varnish and waterfall finish. It is a lesson in patience, and I’ve found the original finish cannot be spared. So, once all the green is off-gonna be a while, I’ll see if I want to stain as close to natural color, or just poly the whole thing. Thanks for showing us your process.

Beautiful find. The book matched veneer is the BEST part of your find. A bit disappointed that you didn't thoroughly remove the paint/gunk from the edges of the drawers - this piece deserved that little extra effort 🥴. I loved that you only used tung oil & let the incredible flame mahogany veneer see the light again. It's a special wood - and it makes my stomach turn to see furniture flippers paint it. Well done. :)
