Just what I was looking for, 11 years later. Thank you for posting this. Going to remove many layers of paint from old molded hard wood pine doors.

Very helpful. My home was built in 1921 and has all the original woodwork & doors with multiple layers of paint. I'm happy you shared how to refinish after removing the paint. So many videos only show how to take the paint off with heat. Now I know how to refinish it. Thank you!

Thank you so much Ron and Jill. Great video and explanation. My husband and I are eager to put your advice to use! We have a nice heat gun but unfortunately don't have one of your heavy duty heating elements. We will remember less is more. Thankfully we will be working with mostly flat surfaces. Can't wait to get started! Thanks again!

What a fantastic video!!! Thank you! I had just bought an old old chair that had been painted a couple of times. I am not sure what the last paint was. It is black and super thick and chipped. Almost seemed kind of like a tar base. Then orange under that then something else then finally WOOD! I started to sand,which would have been a horrible job and was going to just paint over all of the mess. But nope. This I will try this weekend ! Great idea thanks so very much!

hey Ron, thanks for this great video. I have 2 questions: first, the Infra red tool you used is attainable in hardware stores or is it custom made? I have an old house with 6 doors packed with layers of oil paint. I was going to use heat gun to remove then I realized the paint is probably lead & the heat will be toxic. how do you keep yourself safe when working in this magnitude?

Thank you for this video. I didn't want to use paint thinner because of the smell, so after I saw your video I just took my hairdryer to some old paint as a test, and it worked amazingly! But I have an old house, where previous owners painted the wooden bannister with paint which most likely has lead. Would this be a safe way to remove such paint?

Hi Ron, do you use anything to protect the walls when you are stripping woodwork? We have plaster walls. I'm getting a Speedheater paint remover and was curious if it will damage the paint finish surrounding the trim. Thank you!
@tannertoys8 жыл бұрын
+Yvonne Martinez The heat gun will blister paint. I recommend using a 12 x 6" piece of 1/4" plywood -- covered with aluminum foil -- to deflect the heat when you're working along the wall. Heat will not damage the plaster.

@werkbook thanks for the note. Some of the windows in the upper story of our house (circa 1904) are painted over and I plan on using heat to get most of the paint up in areas that aren't near windows. I've bought chemicals for the areas close to the windows. I suppose an option would be to take the trim off but i'm afraid that i wouldn't be able to get it back on again.

Thanks, Lauren: you can find good, cheap tools at thrift stores, like Goodwill. Also flea markets and garage sales offer the best deals. But try Craigs list too.Auctions sometimes have old tools. Hi: the infrared heater is available online -- do an internet search and lots will come up. We wear a respirator (mask) when we use heat guns to remove lead paint. The toxic fumes dissipate quickly. Open the windows and turn on a fan. Good luck with your project!

Hi. Great session. May I ask what stain you use? We have identical colored trim and I just can’t get it to match! Minwax red mahonogy isn’t black enough. Waterlox mahogany is lovely but still not black enough. Thanks!

We use Minwax Red Oak. If you don't mix it up and dip to the bottom where the stain congeals, it can get really dark. Good luck with your project!

Great video, we just bought a house with the same exact woodwork that you have, and are hoping to restore it. Some of our pieces are damaged though, do you happen to know of a place in MA that may have replacement pieces? (Previous owner drilled many holes into the wood)
@tannertoys10 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Alexis. Unless you have a lot of trim to replace, milling new ones will be expensive because the shop has to make a custom "knife" (router bit) to match the pattern of your trim. Call around to wood shops. There should be plenty of places that do this. That said, I should add that we repair our damaged trim with water-based wood putty, which can be carved before it hardens, then can be sanded easily. We paint these repairs with a "faux" woodgrain technique--a video we'll make eventually!

@l1zuka The fumes dissipate fairly quickly. Shut and seal the child's room (rolled towel at bottom of the door). Strip while the child is out of the house for the day (2 days would be better). Use one fan to blow the fumes toward door/window & another to blow it outside. Use damp cloth to wipe floor/work area frequently. Get HEPA filter for vac. Do NOT sweep. Wet/damp wiping is OK.

Hey Ron just wanted to let you know I used your heat method on our bathroom door. It had at least 5 layers of paint ranging from two different green colors, pink, blue, almond and white. What is strange is that the door didn't appear to be stained on the side facing the bathroom. However, the side facing the hall only has one layer of paint and a beautiful stain underneath. The 5 layers I removed were very sticky. It almost seemed like it was glue.

Hi Ron, we just purchased a mountain home with knotty pine walls and ceilings. The previous owners had whitewashed every square inch and I hate that look. I want to restore to the wood which has poly on it. ANy suggestions? Many thx
@tannertoys7 жыл бұрын
If the paint was applied over the varnish, then it should come up pretty easily with heat. If you're lucky, these people did not prime the wood before painting it. If you're really lucky, they used a cheap whitewash, like milk paint. I'd start by taking a heat gun to a section and seeing how it comes up. Good luck!

My house was built in 1898. I'm working on removing 5 or 6 layers of paint. Wish I saw your video first. I used paint stripper. Where can I find small tools to get the white paint from the grooves of the moulding? Thanks!

Any hardware store will have paint scraping tools. Yoandy. u can use old dental tools. I like to find tools at flea markets and yard sales. An ice pick comes in handy. Good luck with your project!
@tannertoys11 жыл бұрын
i agree, the stripping chemicals are really time-consuming because of the wait time and clean-up. Try using a heat gun to see if the paint comes up more quickly. Be sure to wear a mask.You'll need to find some good scraping tools. The great thing about using heat is that its effects are immediatet.

This is probably happening because there is a primer under the paint. All paint will soften if heated. It won't necessarily puff up and peel off easily. That means you will have to do more scraping. The heat softens the paint to make it easier to get up. But sometimes, as in your case, unfortunately, it isn't easy. You might try the soy stripper (liquid) to see what happens. Good luck -- and let us know how it goes!

THANK YOU! My biggest pet peeve is painted wood!!!!!!! My wife and I are in the process of buying a 4600 sq ft early 1900's Victorian with I'd say about 60% of the wood painted... I'm looking forward to the challenge though! Question: Would a 1500w halogen lamp work the same as the tool you're using? The halogen puts out a lot of heat.

Is there any risk to the heat gun or infrared heat getting too close to the window and cracking it?
@l1zuka13 жыл бұрын
I would love to do this in our old house, but I'm worried about our little kid. Say I do use the mask, and infrared heat, and vacuum and ventilate as much as possible, is there anything else I need to do or can do to make sure my kid will be safe from the lead particles? And how much ventilation is enough to be on the safe side?
@rontanner694211 жыл бұрын
In some houses, this might make sense, Dave. But in an old house like this, you can't get any antique trim that would match. So we have to go through this work! Thanks.

@syrensays I've never heard of a hair dryer being hot enough to remove paint! Keep in mind that a hair dryer isn't made for that kind of use -- it will overheat. Get yourself a heat gun. But remember that heat guns will burn the paint hot enough to release the lead toxins, so you should wear a good respirator. The fumes will dissipate fairly quickly. Best of luck with your project!
@c300g13 жыл бұрын
@dirosaga I'm 15 and i restored a Victorian pine door alone. i had absolutely no help. i glass beaded the steel rim mount lock and refinished it in flat black. i stripped the paint off the porcelain handle and painted the iron shaft adapter black. for stripping the woodwork, i first removed the trim inserts. i then applied circa 1850 paint stripper with a brush to the door working in a small area. when i was finished with the stripper, i covered it in clear vapor barrier plastic.
@Curt_Randall11 жыл бұрын
Different strokes. . . but I would like to be able to go back decades to visit my previous home's owners who painted all the woodwork and smack them silly!!! It takes many decades to grow a tree, and just minutes to cover its grain up with paint.

I have a room that is completely wood paneled. The previous owner painted it grey. What would be the best way to remove the paint?
@tannertoys9 жыл бұрын
Derek Hightower if the previous owner did not prime the wood, the paint should come up easily, no matter whether you use heat or a chemical. I'd do a test with a heat gun and see how it comes up.

What happens if there is original shellac under paint. I have an arts and crafts home that has some painted woodwork but the stuff that isnt painted should be refinished too. A lot of the trim has alligator looking shellac ....of course due to age ...I know this is typical. Where do I start??
@tannertoys9 жыл бұрын
If there's shellac under the paint, then the paint will come up more easily--it will not have penetrated deeply into the wood. That's a good thing. If there is only shellac on the wood, then you can take it off with heat too. It will get gummy and messy but you can get it up. After scraping it down with heat, use rubbing alcohol and coarse steel wool to get up the rest of the old shellac. If you want stronger help, you can use denatured alcohol but that stuff is toxic, so you'd have to wear gloves and a mask. Then sand the wood with fine paper (start with 120 grit). Good luck with your project!
@JamesLovesJesus211 жыл бұрын
It works pretty good on a single layer of thin paint, but what about multiple layers?
@tannertoys13 жыл бұрын
You can pick up heat guns cheap at Goodwills and other places like that -- flea markets too. Heat guns put off some fumes you don't want to breathe but it's better than chemicals.

Is it possible to use a hair dryer instead of buying a heat gun? I need to strip paint off my dressing table and won't ever need to use a heat gun after the table is done.
@c300g13 жыл бұрын
(cont.) after doing this in the same area 5 or 6 times, i got down to bare wood. i then sanded it with 150 grit sandpaper. a few weeks after i started the project, i found a black and decker heat gun from 1983 still in the original case unused for $3 at a garage sale. i carefully used it so that i would not burn the wood. right now, i need to strip all the trim. i am going to try using removall stripper because it involves no heavy scraping or sanding which will damage trim.
@tannertoys12 жыл бұрын
@LindaReinhardt Lilda: a light dose of heat should take those off. If not, yes, scrape it. If you're talking about paint splatter on FINISHED wood, then I'd scrap it with a razor, then touch it up with stain and polyurethane. Good luck with your project! Ron
