Song structure is simply the way a song is constructed. What are the components, and how do they fit together? Similar to the construction of a house or a building, there are ways to approach building it. So it can stand, it can handle the elements, it can look and function the way it should. So when it comes to writing your own songs, as a beginner there are some key players that you need to get familiar with. We’ll start with the A-Team: Verse, Chorus & Bridge
Verse
Details, Story, Context, Setting the scene
Chorus
The great sum up. Where your overall concept and theme is driven home. Chorus is king, and all other parts of the song bow down to it. It’s the reason your verses, bridges, pre choruses make sense.
Bridge
It does what it says- it’s quite literally the bridge to take your song to another place before, usually, the final chorus. It’s an opportunity to resolve something, to further express something, to approach your concept from a different angle or a different play on words.
These parts of a song are what make a song. If we didn’t go any further, you’re already set! Here are the supporting characters: Intro/Outro, Pre-Chorus, Post-Chorus
Intro/Outro
What happens to open your song and what happens to close it. The intro sets the mood, tone, feel while the outro typically resolves the mood, tone, or feel. The outro is underestimated a lot, but it can also be used very creatively as the final touch in your song!
Pre-Chorus
A mini bridge that can close a gap between the verse and chorus. It can take details of the story found in verses, and expand on them in a broader way, setting up a chorus. Slowly zooming out for the chorus to land.
Post-Chorus
There’s a lot of opinions on what this is, but I just define it as something cool and chorus-like that comes after the chorus to continue the energy. It could be a hook, it could be a continuation of the chorus music with a different vocal melody.
Here are some third tier characters: Break, Breakdown, Interlude
Break
A section where things take a turn, and the music and/or melody “break” away from the assumed flow of the song.
Breakdown
A form of transition, where instruments and dynamics peel away and die down in a specific order to lay the song down for a bit. Usually for a moment of intimacy, commonly found before a final chorus or during an outro.
Interlude
Another form of transition. Typically a section of a song where the music speaks for itself (so usually no vocals) and carrys the listener to another part of the song.
These parts aren't always used in songs. A lot of times, the genre of music will determine how common it is to use these. For example, a stripped down style probably won’t use a break as often as an EDM or Rock/Alternative vibe. There are no rules about this, it’s up to the artist. But general observations like this can serve as helpful guidelines to the beginner songwriter.
Now that we’ve talked about the pieces that make up the structure of a song, let’s talk about how to arrange them in your song from start to finish. Song structure is important, because the sequence you put these pieces into is another tool you have to tell the story you want to, but also what will help your songs start to sound more like songs. Let’s dive into some of the most common arrangements.
Intro → Verse 1 → Chorus → Verse 2 → Chorus → Bridge → Chorus (x2) → Outro
Intro → Verse 1 → Pre Chorus → Verse 2 → Pre Chorus → Chorus → Bridge → Chorus (x2) → Outro
Sometimes, a song will start right away with a verse:
Verse 1 → Chorus → Verse 2 → Chorus → Bridge → Chorus (x2)
Verse 1 → Pre Chorus → Verse 2 → Pre Chorus → Chorus → Bridge → Chorus (x2)
*This can be a benefit, b/c of the streaming world we live in, jumping right in with music and lyrics can act as a 1-2 punch. It’s a combo that can hook a listener, which is good because it gives your song a chance to be heard.
Or a chorus:
Chorus → Verse 1 → Chorus → Verse 2 → Chorus → Bridge → Chorus (x1)
Chorus → Verse 1 → Pre Chorus → Chorus → Verse 2 → Pre Chorus → Chorus → Bridge → Chorus (x1)
*Similar to starting with a verse, beginning with a chorus is a great way to hook listeners' interest because ideally you’re presenting the catchiest, fullest part of your song right away.
So experiment and don’t overthink it. Remember, song structure is just that… structure. It’s just labels for specific parts of a song. What you fill those parts with matters more than sequencing something for the sake of sequencing something “the right way.” Just write your songs, lean into your intuitions, don’t be afraid to experiment and from there just decide what serves this song best right now. One song at a time!

when i first started songwriting i started with a basic song structure but honestly now i probably so many more experimental song structures bc i feel the need to challenge myself. For example i've actually been writing songs with no chorus recently and actually utilised interludes more instead, an example of this is a song i began working on recently that was structures as Intro/Verse/Interlude/Verse/Interlude/Verse/Break/Bridge/Break/Outro which is kinda more different than what i usually do.

Some song structure won’t have a intro because simple guitar told me it just depends on the song structure that you’re working on it’s very different and the song 🎵 king 👑 or cripple actually starts off with verse one ☝️ and then have a outro and called it verse one ☝️ chorus abridged.

As shown on 10:47-12:26 In popular music, a break is an - being a "break" from the main parts of the song or piece. A break is usually interpolated between sections of a song, to provide a sense of anticipation, signal the start of a new section, or create variety in the arrangement. That’s what Wikipedia said about break it’s after the breakdown and it went bam 💥 it goes into instruments 🎸 🥁 🎹 and no vocals are playing. Another unique way for interludes to appear in a song is at the very end of it, or in its ‘outro’. Think of these as hidden tracks that the artist has carefully crafted into a song or an album. These will appear at the very end and can even be preceded by complete silence so the listener is in for a pleasant surprise. In Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’, one expects the album to end after ‘Something In The Way’, but after a few seconds of complete silence, a new track ‘Endless, Nameless’ appears.

Does segue count on a studio album 💿?
@PullbacktheCurtain
@PullbacktheCurtain 2 жыл бұрын
I would say it does count! I understand segue to mean: continue without pause to another section. So I view segue as an artistic choice. Usually an album is viewed as one big story by the artist or band. So they could use segue as a way to transition from song to song, but also as a way to furthers the story and connect things to the "big concept" of the whole album. Hope this helps! I think 🤔 💭 🧐 in my honest opinion every album 💿 is one ☝️ big story aka big concept of the whole album 💿 and to me every album 💿 if it’s newsboys not ashamed or newsboys take me to your leader or newsboys going public or foo fighters there is nothing left to lose and also feeder polythene and even yesterday went too soon to me they are all album 💿 and they all viewed as one big story by the artist or band like foo fighters or feeder.

I still listen to albums from beginning to end and I am not alone. It’s super important!

But it is true to say that fewer people are listening to albums from beginning to end. Many seem to prefer listening to single songs, or a playlist created by themselves or other people.

@@NathanEswine Similarities of Verse And Chorus The chorus and verse are different in a lot of ways, but there are also a lot of similarities between the two parts. It makes sense to note the similarities of choruses and verses so that you're able to build songs with different yet cohesive sections. They're Both Important Parts of A Song's Basic Structure. The two sections are equally important since they both serve the overall goal of a song. While a chorus may be more memorable, a verse tells more of a song's story, setting up the payoff for the catchy chorus. A verse and chorus can connect deeply with a listener and work in tandem to create a strong piece of music. They Both Incorporate Rhyme. One of the best ways to make a song memorable is to incorporate rhyme. Fortunately, both the chorus and verse utilize a strong rhyme scheme in order to maximize a listener's retention of a song. The Verse And Chorus Help The Listener Attach To A Song. Every songwriter knows that the chorus and verse are essential. These parts may be different, but at the same time, they both serve the main story of the song in collaboration with one another. As you can see, the chorus and verse are both essential to a successful song even though they have their fair share of differences. Hopefully, this guide makes it easier for you to decode these essential songwriting tools so that you can start crafting better songs. Enjoy writing tracks with a memorable verse and chorus! Question 🙋‍♂ does bridge, interlude, breakdown, break, post chorus can all be part of song structure and telling a story?

You nailed it! This kind of "segue" thing happens at the mastering stage of an album... typically the engineer masters all the songs together and then splits the songs up into their own tracks. This way the whole album could play like "one long song" with about the same audio levels between each song. That's why sometimes you'll hear the end of a song at the beginning of another.
