Mockups are a great exercise in so many ways. Composition, orchestration, MIDI programming, workflow. This was one of the first pieces i ever did a mockup of back when Hollywood Strings was the real deal. You know what, they still are 😂

I wish I could say the same about the new Hollywood Orchestra Opus strings... man, they're out of tune. The legato isn't too bad at least. I don't regret buying it though.

@@TheUnderscore_ The Legato is really good in my opinion, what seems really out of tune is the pizzicato in the violins and violas, couldn't use that doubled with woodwinds. But the rest of the library is really good, especially the brass and the 18 violins patch.
@TheUnderscore_
@TheUnderscore_ Жыл бұрын
@@mishakallivroussismusic Agreed. The legato's definitely above average, but compared to legato-focused libraries, it's not nearly as good (the transitions can be very... outstanding). I'm loving everything else though, definitely a worthwhile buy.

this is the right way. Forget “orchestration tips” on youtube. It is all about relating timbres to musical form. not showing “you can this you can that”

Awesome break down. I play the Oboe and I always start my practice with scales and long notes and then the solo from the second movement just because it is one of the nicest oboe solos ever. Keep in mind that Rimski wasn't all that fond of the Oboe at all.

I also love it how you're doing it by ear - some of us don't have a proper musical education (mostly, we can't read musical notation) and makes us feel a lot less inadequate if we started dabling in music purely on talent and learning music theory on a NEED to learn basis :D DAWs have sort of turned this whole mechanism around, making notation sort of a second thought. It's fine, but when you're trying to analize, it's a hinderance... but you can still do mockups through careful listening :D and learn that way.

Great video! I think there are a few mistakes (please correct me if I'm wrong) 1. The first notes of the viola are different 2. The bassoon part should be an octave lower 3. The horns part is actually for trombones and tuba? Nonetheless very inspiring I'm just a beginner getting into orchestration

Hey there! Yes I do, though not everyone does... I find it easier when giving scores to copyists, and most VSTs these days have some variance in delay which makes them sound more realistic and imperfect, even WITH quantization :)
