I believe the connector that twist locks onto the back of the bulb is the igniter ballast for the bulb, not the motor control. Many OEM HID headlights have the same design. It's also possible to replace the HID bulb with LED, but you must be certain it is the type designed to connect to the ballast, which puts out a very high voltage. Although LED bulbs can put out a good bit more lumens than HID, they can also distort the beam pattern in projector style headlamps, so I would stick to HID bulbs with these types of headlights.

Very helpful, thank you! FYI, passenger side housing loosens same as driver side. Right hand thread, i.e. unscrew counter-clockwise, replace clockwise, same with ballast (what you call motor control)

The setup is a little different on a premium model, but it should be easier to do than the steps in this video

It seems that the passenger side cover does not come off easily on my 2016 crosstrek as the frame is in the way. It looks like i have to remove the entire assembly! Yokes

Keep looking and messing with it, it shouldn’t involve removing the whole assembly (at least I hope not!)

Unfortunately, there is absolutely no clearance between the cover that needs to be removed and the frame. If I get a second person to help pull on the assembly (without breaking anything) I might be able to get some clearance.
