In this tutorial pottery video, I show you the construction of a large bonsai pot making with clay slabs. You will see the step-by-step process involved, allowing you to understand the different pottery techniques used to create this type of rectangle pot with clay slabs. The challenge lies in the fact that it is a large rectangular pot, XL ceramics tends to deform a lot during drying and firing. I will show you how to cut the clay slabs and assemble them using the clay slip technique.
The pot will dry for several weeks before firing, as the drying process is a critical factor in the success of the pottery making process. The clay slabs used are in white stoneware that will give a frost-resistant pot after firing at ±1250°C. I use the clay slab technique, which is typically used with leather-hard clay (i.e., pre-dried to be stiff enough and easier to handle). However, I am using a wetter clay, which increases the difficulty in handling, but gives me more time to work and control the deformation of the pottery.
This XL pottery is a complex project due to its size, but I will share my tips and the pottery tools that I use or have made to make this experience as simple as possible for you. You will also discover how to avoid deformations and common mistakes in constructing a pot of this size.

Impressive work, beautiful and elegant. I know what I would put in there if I had it here... Not a bonsai, but an European orchid called Oprhys. A bee orchid from southern Europe (e.g. Ophrys speculum), in moss and a few crocus biflorum bulbs, with some beautiful river rocks. *Just dreaming.*

Excellent work with thorough instructions. Your pots look amazing! Also love those glazes. I'm new to working with clay but have working with bonsai trees for more than 30 years. Thought it was time to give pot making a go now that I'm retired and have more time on my hands. I'm thinking it depends on the size of the pot but generally how thick are your slabs?

Looks like a cone 6 firing. DO not put "big,/flat"in the bottom of the kiln- will warp and/or crack. Wondering why the middle does not sag in firing. I would put a scrap across the bottom, same height as feet but not attached, i.e. like a "post", to keep it from sagging.
@Greg-ceramics
@Greg-ceramics 8 ай бұрын
This is a cone 8 firing. Normally, if your temperature is uniform, firing is identical everywhere in the kiln. I don't have any more breakage at the top than at the bottom of the kiln. Maybe your bottom coils are a little worn out ? Yes, the little extra feet are a good idea, I sometimes also do this on certain large pots which risk deforming.

It could be a solution if I always made the same pots in large quantities, but in that case I might as well use a mold. I don't do mass production, I like to do different things and be creative. The goal of my videos is to learn how to make all types of pot shapes manually. 😉
