Regarding Safety and Risk Tolerance: 1. Rolling through yellow lights / stale greens at intersections keeps the entire group safe as a collective. However, the riders at the front are explicitly responsible to yell: “ROLL”, “SLOWING”, or “STOP”. Simply expecting 60 riders going 30mph to slam on the brakes at every yellow light is extremely unsafe. For everyone. Thankfully the local traffic recognizes this and treats our group of this size as a procession. Police are very cooperative and friendly too. 2. The route we take has been carefully selected and fine-tuned many years ago to avoid as many busy streets, stop signs, and pedestrians as possible during the time of day we ride. We slow roll through stops and none of them take place during any sprint/drag segments. 3. The cyclists in this group are experienced riders who call out road hazards and are able to ride in a predictable and safe manner. We don’t have the luxury of riding on empty country roads or scenic ocean-side highways. Chicago is a bustling city. Ride at your own risk.

This is a great depiction of group ride dynamics, this video reminds me of so many rides I've been on. You have to stay alert and always be thinking on this type of ride, that's hard to do if you're dying. If you're struggling to hang, you start letting gaps open as you miss surges. Then it becomes a vicious cycle: the more tired you are, the more gaps open and the harder you have to ride to close gaps. On this ride, some people know what they're doing and have the fitness. They are riding smoothly and are watching the flow of the group. Others seem to be bleeding out of their eyeballs and aren't paying attention to gaps. Also, I'd say you stayed too far back on this ride. It's actually harder to ride back there, you're in accordion city! Regardless, this looks like a fun ride. I'm in the area and might try to join in the coming season.

Thanks for watching. While the majority of the ride I actually stayed mid-pack, I did drop back occasionally to emphasize the size of the group. See you out there next summer 💪🏾

Did you use the vb-r-168 for this group ride? And if not, would you ever bring it to one. Edit: I saw the winspace at the end of the video 🤣
@PatrickLino
@PatrickLino Жыл бұрын
FUNNY you should ask this question. I was using my Winspace T1500 + Hyper 65 setup, which is my primary bike. The week prior I decided to bring my VB-168 to this same ride as an experiment. The frame felt sluggish, particularly when out of the saddle or sprinting (which is extremely important for this group ride). I tested the frame with both my Hyper 65s and Elite Drive 65 wheels, and results were the same. The sluggishness is the frame not the wheels. The VB168 is totally fine if it's the ONLY bike you own. Especially for $500 However, you will have to "work harder" when the pace gets fast.

What's the minimum bike requirement to survive this? Were there any alloy or old bikes on this ride?
@PatrickLino
@PatrickLino 4 күн бұрын
It's pretty much all modern (carbon) race bikes. This is not to say you need a race bike to survive, but rather that at least half of this particular group races in some form of cycling discipline.

Do any of the Northside/ Northshore Police Departments both you guys for not stopping at stop signs?
@PatrickLino
@PatrickLino Жыл бұрын
The short answer no. The route was purposely created to only intersect with about 4 or 5 stop signs during the entire route. And they happen only during neutral sections, not in the middle of a sprint point. It would be even more dangerous to expect 60 rides going 30mph to all be able to safely stop at a stop sign.
@rtscycling
@rtscycling Жыл бұрын
@@PatrickLino agreed. I have just heard stories of the northshore pd's being a tad overzealous.
@PatrickLino
@PatrickLino Жыл бұрын
@@rtscycling OHHH YES. Saturday mornings in the summer, they purposely hide while looking for offenders up and around Highland Park. Don’t necessarily blame them. Having a group of 20+ riders roll through stop signs while families are out with strollers or jogging is a inconsiderate. I know because I’ve been ticketed before LoL.
