Join me on a trip to Pevek, Russia's Northernmost city, notorious for extreme weather. Temperatures here drop as low as -42°C or - 44°F in winter, but that's not even the main problem. Every year the city is terrorized by a blustery wind that knocks people over and make them crawl between buildings. Pevek’s also become the cite of a daunting experiment. It's the world’s first settlement powered by a FLOATING nuclear reactor. And it’s just 600 km from Alaska…

I'm catching up on some of your earlier videos and noticed that you used to use voiceovers whereas in more recent videos you made the switch to subtitles. I have to say, I like the switch you've made. I find the subtitles to be less distracting than the voiceovers. They add another level of authenticity to your documentaries. Excellent Report!👍 Presently, I live in the Sonoran Desert, a very warm climate, and a place such as Pavek is difficult to imagine. Ordinary, but hardy, people living and working in such an extraordinary and harsh place probably live lives not unlike future space colonists. Thanks for the report. @@RealReporter The Sonoran Desert is most definitely a "warm" climate. Alas, for a few months during the summer it gets so hot that you can actually cook a steak on the dashboard of your vehicle. However, those are the days that you can recognize without a doubt God's gift of simple respite: shade and a gentle breeze. I wish you godspeed on your quest to find more new and interesting stories.

Nothing wrong with expired food if its stored correctly. The dates on most products are rather cautious.

No, Siberia - it is Siberia, Yakutiya - it is Yakutiya, … taiga ≠ tundra. I live ~300 km southern Pevek. But there is no taiga, only tundra 500 mils around…. and sopka’s (small maintains ~ 250-500 (1500) meters)… and Gold, there are 10% mining gold of the World (third plies after Ural, and Alaska) Chukotka is realy same - Alaska.

Сейчас глянула в вакансии и ценомер. Средняя зарплата около 130 тыс. рублей в месяц (но как правильно конвертировать в доллары, это не так очевидно: нужно применить ППС, паритет). Цены в Певеке примерно на треть выше, иногда вдвое, но на свежие овощи и фрукты многократно, чем, например, в моем Воронеже. Бензин дороже всего на 1-2 рубля. К сожалению, в Певеке тундра и мерзлота, и дачи практически не дают урожая, но люди растят огурчики-помидорчики прямо дома, на подоконнике и в застеклённых утепленных лоджиях (а белые ночи по полгода - это плюс). Есть ещё свое сельскохозяйственное фермерское овощеводство (теплица "Росток"), но из-за морозов и сильных буранов при -50 c, бывают аварии, и урожай вымерзает. Но продукция теплицы примерно вдвое дешевле привозной.

That food on minus temperatures to expire 😁 no way They don't need fridge, just keep food outside, saves a lot on electric bill, I do this in winter in Serbia.

@@GordanaStetin Yes this is safe. Reactors designed in same way as ones on nuclear submarines, icebreakers or aircraft carriers. There is nothing for free in this world. Prices are higher in places where it is hard to deliver.However most organisations which provide you a job give you meals three time a day. As for fridge - there are summers when the temperature is above 0C for three month. We keep food outside the window during winter in a boxes that we cold "Chukotka freezer" but for mild cold fridge temperature or during summer we need fridges. And it is pretty expensive to buy it here because of logistics, so we often use old Soviet models.
