Thank you Nicole. You are the first teacher to point out what it means to have a dysregulated nervous system and how to heal it. I am 46 years old and realize I was stuck in a cycle of fear, reaction and addictive repetition of my childhood traumas. I did psychotherapy, discovered yoga, read many books on consciousness but could not bring all these areas together until now. I appreciate you work very much!!

Great tip about doing one thing at a time! Often people get overwhelmed and feel like making all these changes at once is too much. My favorite nervous system tip is to end the day on a calm note, I do journaling, have only amber lights or himalayan salt lamps for light, and don't have any electronics on the last hour before bed. This really helps me wind down for sleep, and i'll say "I agree" about sleep! It's probably the most crucial part of maintaining a healthy nervous system!

Great advice! I use post-it notes and put them everywhere with different fun things to do, like this morning was breathing exercise, then researching this person, then Rick and Morty, and then the Vedas. Once I'm done with this, I am going to make myself some mini pancakes with butter and syrup, yogurt, and orange juice. It is almost 10am in the morning but I am barely eating breakfast because I made sure that I slept 8 hours.

So I'd like to not use any electronics before bed besides maybe my Kindle. But when I try to do that, my mind just keeps racing with thoughts, pages, people I need to checkout or info I need to lookup right when I hit the bed. If you've any tips for this, please lmk :)

@@jahnavisharma6562 Even having just one device will stop your mind from relaxing. I use my Kindle, phone, and laptop only up to an hour before I go to bed. I use a planner or checklist to write down all the things I need to do, research, etc. as I think of them, that way when it's time to wind down for bed, I can rest assured that I wrote down everything I thought of that day. I also use a journal before bed along with planning my next day so I get all my thoughts out of my head before actually laying down. It also can be helpful to meditate or do some gentle yoga exercises before bed, this gets you back into your body not your mind. It can be hard to meditate if your mind is racing so I like to tell people to use guided meditations, listen to binaural beats or ASMR (that works for me every time, although not everyone has the same reaction to it).

Thank you for this 🙏 And thank you for the encouragement at the end, to NOT try to change everything at once. I tend to do that and then... well, you know what happens. A small daily promise I'm working on currently is resting more. I'm up at 4:45am for work, working 10+ hours every day and I'm a single mom of 3. My youngest child recently pointed out the fact that I usually haven't taken off my shoes or sat down when it's 9 or 10pm. And by that time I'm ready to collapse. I started listening to your podcast in my ear buds at work or on the drive home and it inspired me to start setting timers throughout my day to check in with myself and see if I need to rest- then allow myself (sometimes force myself) some time to sit or lay down and just rest... whether it be for 5 min or 30 min, just resting means that I am taking care of myself and I'm showing myself that I'm worth taking care of. Working on it 😊

I agree, the health of my nervous system has also played a huge role in my healing, and your videos & book have made a big difference for me in that so thank you! 1. I quit drinking alcohol 2. Meditation every day 3. Yoga every day 4. Time for self reflection and self care every day This past year has been hard but these practices have helped me through some devastating incidents. Thank you for being there with me!

I love your work Dr Nicole. Becoming a new Mum has led me to your work, at the same time I have limited time for me and am sometimes overwhelmed with how my life has changed so dramatically, understanding myself better has helped me be a better parent. My 3yr old son uses deep breathing when he feels overwhelmed/emotional/frustrated and will then tell me ‘I feel better now’ Thank you for sharing your knowledge and helping the world heal when it’s needed more than ever 🙏🏼

Thank you Nicole, I love these short, extremely helpful and articulate videos! Lately I’ve been adding a Gua sha facial massage and dry brushing to my morning routine. It’s not every single day, but it’s becoming more and more regular and I do feel that it sets my nervous system and day off to a good start. I also like to put my legs up the wall in the evenings.

I would definitely say that from experience breath work and meditation have really helped my nervous system in quite a substantial way, as a trauma survivor my body was in an ongoing state of trauma response which manifested in my life as actions of flight (running away) and also also freeze and fawn (shutdown and disconnected from my emotions and trying to help the abuser through feeling responsible for their emotions.

My favorite wasn't mentioned here, so I wanted to throw it into the comments. I'm a huge fan of foods, supplements and pharmaceutical meds that are GABA system agonists. For me, that's GABA supplement, L theanine, green tea extract, Depokote (pharmaceutical mood stabilizer), Pregabalin (pharmaceutical for nerve pain), Baclofen (pharmaceutical muscle relaxer). Increasing activity in the GABA system has been monumentally beneficial for me.

What to eat for healthy nervous system ?

Love love love this! Thank you for creating this. I absolutely resonate with the four pillars, with breath work being my favourite!! 😍 I also reduce some things in my lifestyle that activate or trigger my nervous system in order to bring myself back to place of calm. (ESP when I am having hard time returning to safety) For example, I noticed when I drank coffee in the morning, it really activated my nervous system, and then following on with all of life’s responsibilities after it- I found that I was not able to get back to a state of calm, I was on sympathetic all day. I really struggled. So now I have tea instead of coffee and I feel that I am more centred and able to cope with stress through out my day, no matter what life throws at me. I think it’s important to develop awareness on how lifestyle factors/choices can also contribute to a locked SNS

I believe the main basic easy ways to take care of your nervous system is to eat, drink water, shower, get some sunshine.

I’m curious to know how going from fight (28 years) to freeze this past year, what is my body saying and is this a flag in my healing journey? Do I need to address something differently now that my anxiety had shifted between these 2?

Please do Metta meditation... and learn about the mental phenomena called Fear... watch your mind after a fear episode..Don't fear fear or feel intimated with fear . If you have come thus far to identify that your body and mind are dwelling in fear response, you are closer to shedding that fear and moving on, like a "snake shedding it's worn out skin" ( to quote The Buddha). Sometimes the seeds of fear were due to us not learning to handle that emotion from childhood.. sometimes as babies we may have been ' scared of ' stuff and become timid and never learnt courage ♥. There's a world open for you when you can shed fear. Investigate what are the triggers and strategically deal with each one

I get so confused with the whole breath thing because here are people like Irene Lyon who say that it’s actually detrimental to try and calm ourselves and change our breath when in fight/flight. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
@phantomliminal

Speaking anecdotally, I find it extremely effective. Shallow breathing can lead me into a full blown panic attack, while breathing diaphragmatically with my exhales a few seconds longer than my inhales grounds me quickly. But if I'm in an "amygdala hijack" kinda state sometimes I need to dunk my face in ice water first (mammalian dive response) or exercise at high intensity for a bit. Then the paced breathing.
