This is interesting that you thought of this. Galvanized steel contains a coating of zinc oxide, which coats and protects the inner layer of steel and prevents/slows oxidation, corrosion and rusting. I would think that you are removing the zinc oxide coating, as it is well known that metals like zinc readily and rapidly react with HCl solutions to produce hydrogen gas and zinc chloride. So that washy color is zinc chloride. Unfortunately, this greatly compromises the weather resistance of your material, as the unprotected ferrous sheets are much more prone to rusting. I would like to some follow up videos comparing how quickly this weathers compared to the shiny ones.

Wow that is some great detail! I can tell you that as of today they have not change a bit yet. Was actually hoping they’d surface rust for some character but no luck yet.

Great video! Pump sprayer trick is brilliant. I'm trying to recreate that large spangle effect that old galvanized sheet metal had when lead was part of the process. The speckled effect from the sprayer might get me close to that old look. Good job!

That is great. I am also curious how it looks over time? I work in the metal supply industry and lots of people don't like the shine of Galvanized. You can also just purchase Zincalume/Galvalume panels in the same corrugation, typically for the same price if you find the right supplier and it would look very similar to your end product.

If I may make a suggestion: Would if you used a softer brisled push broom (roughly 24 inches wide) to spread the solution? This may lessen the spotting resulting in a more uniform look. Another advantage gained by adding this process is maximizing the Lysol coverage resulting in using much less product. Especially useful if you have many pieces..

Now that’s not a bad idea. Curious if you’d get brush lines or not. Worth trying for sure!

Thanks for the video. I know galvanizing metal roofs have a zinc coating to prevent rusting. So you know if the process of spraying the cleaner on will remove the zinc layer and there cause rusting ? I’m thinking of doing it to my roof. Had to replace a few panels and compared to the other panels on the roof it doesn’t match at all 😢

Yes sir it will! The acid is taking that galvanic coating off which is why the shine goes away. You’ll want to leave it on longer and not dilute it too much. It works great if you’re patient. I’ve seen where you can throw some shredded steel wool on to add character to it as well but have never done it myself yet.

Great video thanks I’ve been searching for a solution to this. I have a couple questions. How much of the toilet bowl cleaner did you use for 15 sheets? And was your sprayer a two gallon or one gallon? I have to do 32 sheets of this I just want shine off of it. This seems like best method I have found. Great job thanks again Clancy

I bought a 2-pack and still had some left over. I used a two gallon pump sprayer. I think i mixed 1 bottle of cleaner and about 1 gallon of water to thin it out to spray better. The cleaner is fairly thick on its own.

This is a great result! Thank you for sharing. The sheets of tin I want to de-shine are inside a business. Do you feel brushing the cleaner on, then carefully trying to take the cleaner off with a bucket of water and a sponge/rag will get enough of the cleaner off? Could this process be successful indoors?

I would think so. As long as you have a way to keep your run off from ruining your floor coverings. Not sure what it would do to them.

Will this work on a red galvanized roof without taking color off? If not do you have a suggestion what to use. VERY shiny in the the sun

Great question. Not sure of the answer but I would assume the shine is part of the paint so would be hesitant to mess with its surface.

Great video, do you think muriatic acid would work the same as the hydrochloric that's in the toilet bowl cleaner?
@freetotryit

I believe that muriatic and hydrochloride are basically the same thing. I’d double check but that’s what I always thought.

Yes but it’s what I wanted for appearance and being a vertical surface it never has water pooling on it.

did it have a rust after you remove the shine?
@freetotryit
@freetotryit 2 жыл бұрын
No it did not. But if that’s what you’re after you can do it by leaving it on longer and reapplying. I actually wanted to but my wife didn’t want the rust look.
