Teaching my kids to read has been one of my favorite parts of homeschooling. Now that all 4 of my boys have used or are using this method I feel comfortable sharing what we do. You might not agree and that's ok, but it might work well for someone else.

Do you enjoy teaching your kids to read?

Nope. It is my least favorite subject.

@@christinaalbee6874 aww, I'm sorry. Keep in mind that just because it's been hard with one kid doesn't mean it will be the same with all of them.

@@angierobinson4899 Sorry it was hard with your daughter. I think with kids that struggle the most important part is to show them how enjoyable reading can be and then give them time. I was awful at reading when I was young and now as an adult I read more than most people I know.

Logic of English foundations teaching sounds like this! It’s my favorite! It has a whole curriculum- open and go with letter tiles and songs and books. Just what you are talking about!!! I had no idea all about spelling had the same philosophy. Thank you for showing me that!

Thanks for affirming that about Logic of English. That was my understanding but I've never used it.

This is really good. You packed a LOT of practical, actionable advice in. I think it will be really helpful for people! I loved the part about teaching ALL the letter sounds.

Thank you! I hoped it came across clearly. I've had negative feedback on this approach before so I tried to explain it as well as I could. I appreciate your encouragement.

@@FamilyStyleLearning I think it's great. And I think we're probably pretty close to your target audience. Someone who doesn't know exactly how they'd want to do it and is open to whatever right be the best approach. Really good. I wouldn't have commented if I didn't think it was worthy of praise 😁

I am one of those moms very nervous about teaching them how to read. Mine will be a kindergardener in a couple weeks. I do like this video and ordered bob books thank you!

Love this video and how to highlighted learning all the various sounds from the beginning. This approach is similar to the "Better Alphabet Song" and the secret stories approach build on top of that.

Go at your students pace. Some lessons will go fast and some could take weeks. That's ok.

This is great advice! I think teaching little ones to read can be needlessly intimidating. As you say it is a natural process for children. They absorb so much language especially when they're so little! 🙌☺️

I think teaching kids to read becomes stressful when we are pushing them at a rate faster than they are ready for. Thank you for your encouraging words.

Kindergarten teacher here:) My philosophy when it comes to teaching young learners to read has evolved over the last 24 years. I’ve learned through the latest research that reading is NOT a natural process for us. The human brain is hard-wired for spoken language - making learning to speak natural. But children must be taught how to read and that is through us, the teachers and parents. We have to rewire the brain connections through systematic explicit instruction . It’s so fascinating!

I really like this approach to teach reading. Do you follow the AAS teachers guide or do u make sure they get all the phonic sounds down first then start the curriculum. I've never seen the curriculum in person. We just finished AAR Pre-reading.
@FamilyStyleLearning

I make sure they have all the sounds down before progressing in AAS. We do start on Bob books as soon as they show interest in starting to read. For your first child follow the AAS teachers guide at your own pace. Some times a lesson is done in a day sometimes we get stuck on a lesson for a while. After you know the rules well you might only refer to the teachers guide once in a while for future children. I find that I use it less and less with each child. Glad this was helpful. I have a spelling video coming out soon, so stay on the look out if your interested in that.

Great concept and totally logical to me! Do you just begin to teach letter names in the early years or do you also teach the sounds? For example, so many of the preschool-type workbooks and pages have pictures such as an apple or alligator for letter “A”. Would you give them all of the “A” sounds at this time or how do you navigate that? I also watched your preschool resources video, good stuff. Thanks!

All About Spelling flash cards are really nice for this. We use them for as long at we need. I think this is step one in All About Spelling and sometimes it takes us weeks or months to get them all down, but that fine, we aren't in any hurry. I do still use other workbooks or coloring pages to but I have my kids say all the sounds. We do it with diamond dots too. Like if my son has to put all the green dots on the "a" space he will say all three sounds while he does it. Hope that helps.

Where can I get those cards? Can I get them separately from AAS?
@FamilyStyleLearning

I don't think they sell them separately but if you are part of any homeschool swap shops you might find the curriculum fairly inexpensively.
