Awesome review and comparison, Tanya!! Thoroughly enjoyed the whole video. Reading lessons looks like a book I would like. We have Susan's book and used it for two kids. This time around, I'm going to try our Waldorf curriculum as closely as possible. My first two were late readers. My third almost taught himself, though we did begin Susan's book. He was 8 though, so late according to most educators. I think the 'easy' part of the lesson would be if you did these books when the child was older versus younger. But it seems like these books are marketed for 4-5 year olds. -Hana

Thanks, Hana! I agree, the "easy" might be more accurate with an older child. I'm taking a big lesson from you and trying to go slow and steady with N4. I want her to feel empowered, not defeated. If she doesn't feel up to it, we relax and pull out art supplies or play a game or have a tea party. #slowschooling

+Our Casa Sweet Casa, between 100EL and TRL, I've been really happy with our progress. I'm adding in All About Reading and the READ worksheet curriculum next year as well, and I think that will provide a nice blend of new and review. I'm going slow and steady so she continuously feels accomplished and brilliant. 🙂 Thanks so much for watching!

We love OPGTR it is very thorough in teaching all the phonetic sounds of the English language and that it doesn't have any pictures or colorful distractions and when your child has completed the book he/she is around a 4 grade reading level or more in my opinion. It is differently a big book and should be worked through slowly and in short about of time. We don't do as much of the activity at the end of some of the lesson because use have a spelling program that we for that and it makes the lessons a bit long. We started using this book when my son was a few months after he turned 5 and it worked great for a long while, but I wish I would've known then to take it slower and not expect so much out of him. He was doing great and ready, but I just for some reason thought he should more faster. So I got a cheap version of hooked and phonics and now we switch between to two using HOP has a review and confidence booster. I love that OPGTR doesn't leave anything out, it goes all the way through all the phonics you need to know to read, it very helpful to have the next step all in one place. Thanks for reviewing all of theses! I have looked over them in a scanning fashion over the years my I feel like my boys are struggling wondering if I need to try something different, but now I know for sure we are using just what we need to be using! I'm thinking of grabbing phonics pathways from the library and making copies of the games just for fun. Ps I had some many people in my circle recommend 100 easy lessons and every time I went to look at it in the store and opened the book my brain went crazy and I couldn't stand the layout of the pages, honestly I still can't, but I glad to have and understanding of how it works. So I know what you mean about it has to fit the teacher first. If I could find these at a thrift store I would have no problem having a ton of phonics programs available, in fact I have had to refrain myself from buying every phonics program on the market, but space and budget will not allow it. Thanks again! God Bless and I'm sure this will be very helpful to a lot of new homeschooling moms!

I tried READ with my son and he disliked it so much that we decided to try Teach your child to read in 20 easy lessons and he LOVES it! We also have Alpha Phonics by Samuel L Blumenfeld which we might go through when we are finished 20 easy lessons. Thanks for sharing with us. So glad I found your channel. I was worried my adhd son would struggle with reading but he is doing great. Did you underline words when reading to your son when he taught himself to read? That's amazing that he figured it out himself.

Have you heard of Progressive Phonics? It’s available for free online and I am going to look into that for my youngest. My six year old didn’t love TYCTR, but I do think it gave her a great foundation. We started using The Reading Lesson when we got to Lesson 60 or so in TYCTR and she loved it! I do underline the words when I read aloud to the younger kids - I’m sure that helped my son, you’re right! Still, he picked up complex phonics and even sentence phrasing without any conscious effort on my part. Thanks so much for watching and sharing your experience!

+Autumn L.- Seasonal Living, we are incorporating All About Reading this year, and it involves lots of different short activities, so it's been working for my littles. But even making short word cards with actions to act out can be helpful (read "cat" and meow, read "hop" and hop, read "slow" and move in slow motion, etc). Charades help as well! They can read the work and you can guess it or visa versa.

I love Teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons. I never show the child the book though. I have them read all the letters/words by writing them on 3 by 5 cards. As a person who learned to read easily and without phonics, I have yet to present phonics lessons to a child (granted, only two of them) that they have not been very confused and persisted in that confusion. I'm still in a quandary. My oldest son was very frustrated by phonics, could do the lessons, but could not apply the learning. I sent him to a private school after that, and after a couple months of an hour long tutoring session once a week, he was reading everything he could get his hands on, and could read or attempt words that I knew he hadn't learned, but he had the vocabulary to guess at them in their context. It was amazing and I'm only sad that I wasn't able to see the sparks going off when he realized he could do it! I think confidence has a lot to do with it. I almost forgot to say that what I suspected was the problem--he learned much better using whole language word games instead of phonics! Somewhere along the way, the decoder switch was flipped! Blessings along the path, Tanya! Thank you so much for all you share.

+Emily Ruegg, I think my son learned the whole word way as well. I think the phonics way is working well for my daughter, but maybe the decoder switch will just flip at some point for her as well.
