One of the hallmark signs of autism is a child not responding to their name. I know when Lucas was a young child, he would not respond to his name and that was a warning sign of autism. So, I now know, as a behavior analyst, how to teach response to your name.

Thank you very much for creating and still posting updates in your channel Dr. Barbera. My younger son (2y7m) has symptoms of autism and also doesn't respond to his name. We have been calling his name whenever we require his attention (whether positive or negative). We will commit to being more intentional and conscious with pairing his name to positive reinforcements and the like from now on. What I've noticed is that he picks up better from observational and behavioural learning. We are trying to pair these to words and phrases although there are inconsistencies in his responses and initiations. Anyway, thanks again. From a concerned father of a young child with autistic symptoms.

@andrewaupositivepsychology
@andrewaupositivepsychology 2 жыл бұрын
@@mssophia978 Hi, he is still being followed up by a clinical psychologist and attending speech and occupational therapies weekly. Things are not going well as expected as we have been told that he will not be able to follow the school's academic curriculum. He's 3y7m now anyway, so we are trying our best to help him along the way. In terms of name responding, we pair his name with usual activities that he likes. For example, , go for walk, which means going to the playground. Other than that, we always go to his level (e.g., kneeling, bending or sitting down whilst looking at him) and call him. He may not respond the first time but usually do in the 2nd or 3rd time we say his name. After responding, there will be a hug, cheer, clap, or getting him to do what we are asking him to (e.g., wear clothes, bathe, brush teeth, etc.) - Reinforcement. Over this past year until more recently, he has begun to have more eye contact and even initiates play with us while looking at us in the eye. Although his still lacking in speech, we are trying to use these bids or attention to capture his interest and "plant" useful words for him to take in.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve been in denial and I’ve been a real pick to everyone (docs, family) as I’m very protective over my boys and I’m really bad at dealing with stuff. My youngest boy is 2 and recently been diagnosed with level 3 autism. I need to learn as much as I can to make sure he has the best opportunity in life. I find it amazing that I have two kids (one with autism) and they both have such different abilities that amaze me everyday and make me proud. I really do think Autism is not a disability, but a different ability. Need to stop saying his name all the time and replace it only when pairing something positive. Let ya know how I go Doc

Me and my younger brother were both diagnosed with autism. He was diagnosed at two while I was diagnosed at 13. He’s 1and1/2 years younger than me so we’re quite close. He is higher functioning socially but lower functioning academically, while I’m the opposite higher functioning academically but lower functioning socially. Most people think of autism as a spectrum that goes from very severe to ‘you’re not that autistic’. When it’s not like that we all share different strengths and weaknesses. What really annoys me though is my religious parents think that changing my younger brother’s name will ‘help him talk’ and ‘fix him’ when that IS NOT how it works. They already tried to ‘fix’ both of us last time when we were younger and ‘didn’t work’. I really don’t want them to change his name and it really upsets me when they think that’ll help when all they need to do is spend more time at home with him, especially my dad. He was never home. It was always work 6 days a week, then cricket 3 times a week, badminton 2 or 3 times a week. When cricket isn’t in season, he goes to my uncle’s house and plays cards every Friday and Saturday now, leaving at 10pm and coming at 3am or 4am. This results him to wake up around 1pm or 2pm. When my younger brother tries to wake him up he’s tired and pushes him away. I just really hate my parents rn.

My son has autism, he is 4. The way you have articulated yourself gives me hope that my son will have a fulfilling life. Some times men do not have the tools, every generation must do better. My dad is a workaholic as well. He didn’t have the tools because he was never given the love that he needed. You understand what you need, because you are much more in step with yourself. Make sure you hand those tools down to your kids! Stay strong, work out, it’s a huge self esteem builder.

Thank you for this! Gonna try this with my little brother. He turned 2 years old this month of June and my Mom has been concerned about not responding to his name. So yeah cant wait to try your suggestions on positive reinforcements! You have a point though. I too repititively say his name in a demanding nature. Hoping that he would look at me. There are times when my little brother would respond to his name but only if we are trying to show him something. Rarely does he turn responding to his name.

My son was just seen 2 days ago and the psychiatrist basically said he is on the spectrum. He knows all his shapes..counts to 100. Counts by 2s knows all his colors and alphabets..he knows different animals days of the week the months of the year just sooo much to be 3.5 but he doesn’t communicate his needs and wants. He pulls you to do what he wants and you just have to figure out what he wants you to do. He rarely answers to his name maybe once in a blue moon seriously. I definitely will be trying this method ! The doctor is recommending ABA therapy he has been in speech since he was 2.5 but that has been a very slow process for him i think she isn’t aggressive enough. But he will be starting head start in 2 weeks where they have many resources and help that will come to him which i love. I’m trying to learn as much as possible to get him on the right track!

How do you adjust your comments (e.g., "Johnny push") and language in general for older (elementary) students without adding too much complexity? I'm an over-thinker, but I think it's an important nuance to consider that I don't seem to see a clear answer for. I've seen research to suggest that using complete sentences is better than short phrases (when modeling AAC, using sentences but only pressing buttons for key words), but I've also seen other research stating that using telegraphic utterances is effective. Your thoughts?

It can depend on the learner but I like using pivotal phrases (verb/noun combos) and for kids with low receptive language we want to make it clear what part of speech they should attend to. Watch this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iMWeqcJo1pich3U.html

@@marybarbera Thanks for the reply! Sounds similar to an article I read about the use of parentese with babies and toddlers in general, where they said the same thing about it's like learning a foreign language, and it's important to help them parse out when a new word ends and begins.

Hi. Our 2nd child (a boy) is 20 months and unresponsive to his name. It's a strange one. He seems to tick all the other boxes. If you show him a toy and hide it, he'll go and fish it out. He likes closing doors and wants to climb on me and share a hug when I'm playing with his sister (jealousy) etc... but my wife mentioned today, why isn't he responding to his name? He's starting to recite his ABCs and can say mama, baba, oy, yes, oh, but he can't really form adjectives yet like TV, teddy. People questioned our daughter who didn't walk till she was 20 months and was bashing her head on the floor during tantrums. Our son started walking 13 months and running around freely. I will use your technique but it's 5am in the UK and I'm here watching videos, worried about our son.

I was diagnosed with autism and that didn’t help with my primary school as they didn’t care about me at all like I could be doing my own thing and I would get hit on the ground by a kid and they wouldn’t do anything but as soon as I retaliate back they come after me like a 5 star wanted level in gta and it also doesn’t hope the headteacher wanted me to go to a special school and constantly tried to get me expelled and out of all the teachers like 50 ish probbaly less only 5-6 acctualy liked me and wanted to understand and help me now I wanted to kill myself by the time I was in year 6 as that’s when things started to get worse I barely finished my SATS I was put on a separate desk away from everyone the desk was tiny and the chair was big I got bullied about 1-2 times a week and the headteacher told my mum I am a failure and out of all that all I got from primary was the trauma of my past and a mental scar in my brain almost killing my self 1-2 years ago with my mates (I’m 15 now) as all they kept doing to me was calling me autistic and just generally being nasty and it doesn’t help that hardly anyone listens to me anymore my friend I knew since primary doesn’t talk to me anymore I sit my lunches alone on the floor outside and break is the same thing but next to some familiar faces and I don’t even care at this point if they dont want me there I just at least want one time every 24 hours to speak to someone or just be near someone

He is already teased for 'not talking properly' at the playground and it used to happen at kindy at the start of this year. Luckily it's only 2 days a week but next year is 5 days and its a regular state school that his 2 brothers go to (they are in year 2 and 3 now). I am so glad you are here because your story is very important and you articulate yourself very well. How are you going now? I hope you are finding enjoyment in life and its good you want to reach out to others. May you have positive experiences along the way 🤗

It's not ok howthey treat you, and you deserve to be heard and validated. But I know even for myself. When you're in the midst of the storm it feels like it will last forever, but nothing lasts forever. Truly hope you can search out people who have your best interests at heart, maybe a support group in your local town? Either way I am sorry again you're going through all that and I hope you find peace and love
