The slots are for dust removal and should sweep the dust out! So it does mater the direction if you want the slots to perform it's engineered function.

The slots are actually engineered for cooling and high temp gas release for hard braking on hot brakes. If the pads were putting off that much dust as to need a "dust-sweeper" you would be out of pad material after just a few stops. Thanks for watching!

@@RockyXTV The slots are not engineered for cooling(I'm an engineer and that doesn't make sense), if they were for cooling they would completely penetrate the rotor, but they don't, they are a machine turned channel used for dust removal. If the sweep, grove, channel is turning the wrong rotation you are trying to force dust to the center of the rotor during braking. So while you can brake in both direction, building dust up between the rotor and the pads reduces fuel mileage and brake efficiency. Also, it's just left or right hear and you could put them on the efficient way or the way that will reduce performance and life, I think I would just go ahead and put them on the correct way and be done.

Great information, love bit on why some companies decided to label non-directional rotors as far as driver / passenger - makes sense though.

I thought it was a good reason to start labeling them even though they don't have to go on that way. Thanks for watching!

thanks man, you explained this great... I just put drilled and slotted rotors on my truck and got drivers side done and nearly complete with passengers side. Then I seen the sticker that marked the rotor for driver front (FML right) Tired and worn out, I finished putting truck back together with attitude of I will figure this out later. I just need to get truck outta friends driveway and goto bed

The slots are cut on an angle for a good reason, and should point forward so by centrifugal force, they sling the wear dust outward away from the caliper ...! The slots also keep the brake pads wearing flat...!

I dont know why i looked this up after i put the slotted rotors on my car lol. But u got lucky because my vanes are straight. I didnt want to have to take everything apart and swap sides. Thanks

Good video. I’m just going through this with m 2017 Audi S6. I bought replacement “OEM” rotors and there is only 1 part number from Audi, and the manufacturer SHW only has 1 part number. But the vanes are VERY directional so they would be going in the wrong direction on the passenger side. Not sure what to do.

Slotted/drilled rotors are very puzzling. What bugs me is the slotted aspect. Say you got them this way without directional vanes but with the slants like you have them on the table but on a car going towards your left side, the brake dust will be expelled towards the outer edge with every rotation because of the centrifugal force, whereas if the slots were the other way your dust would be forced inward towards the center, basically compacting itself and filling the slot. Not sure if that makes any sense. 🤔

Just be sure to check the interior cooling veins. If they're straight, they can go whatever direction you like. If they are curved, they will be directional. Thanks for watching!

With straight vaned rotors do you determine the left and right as if you were sitting in the drivers seat or if you were standing outside the vehicle and facing it from the front? My new straight vaned drilled and slotted rotors are labeled left and right but I need an answer to my previous question for proper installation placement. Thanks

wrong, its a patent thing, the correct way is to load the pads to the out side, you put slots on the reverse way and the pads grab the slot shoving them to the inside as well and recirculating dust and other things causing a squeal or chatter. . these companies can remake what is already patented so they reverse the cooling fins or the slots. there is a correct way "to kick dust and water to the outside AWAY from the pads as well as pad loaded to the outside."

What about slotted and drilled vs solid rotors. I was going to go for the slotted and drilled and other Jeepers told me that the slotted and drilled become filled with debris and render them useless. Now I am in a quandary. Any advise?
@RockyXTV
@RockyXTV 6 жыл бұрын
Drilled can and are more likely to get filled with debris. Slotted is much less likely to get plugged up, but it is still a possibility. For offroading solid has always been the "go to" type of rotor, but slotted can work pretty nicely as well. I personally have the TeraFlex big brake kit with slotted rotors on my Wrangler and have never gotten anything in the slots other than some brake dust. Even when going through mud pits and out on the trail I've never had an issue with the slotted, but then again that is just my experience.

I’ve had drilled rotors that developed tiny cracks around the hole, go with dimpled if you can find them
@RockyXTV
@RockyXTV 6 жыл бұрын
This can be common on drilled rotors that see a lot of quick heat cycling. You are correct, the dimpled rotors are great as well.

Correct, internal cooling veins. I think that is how I explained it in the video. The external slots will not make a rotor directional, it's all internal. Thanks for watching!
