Great video. It brings back fond memories of living in the Central San Joaquin Valley where there were pomegranate shrubs growing wild everywhere, and nearly everyone had at least one large tree. As kids we rode our horses all over the countryside munching on walnuts, pomegranates, and stray grapevines loaded with concord-type grapes. From October to early December those pomegranates were the best!

Really enjoyed your video, Cameron. I share your enthusiasm for pomegranates - they are SO GOOD and SO EASY to grow and process! I have two of the Wonderful variety, and I love juicing them and making delicious pomegranate spritzers. This fall I also dried some of the arils to use for hot tea this coming winter. Gardening is such fun! Also, "SNACKTIVITY" is my new favorite word. 😊 I eat in the garden all the time, and this term describes that perfectly. Good job! - Kim

This is an amazing Video on Pomegranates harvesting but I would like to mention that the membrane and Skins when dried make wonderful Tea and has more antioxidants than the fruit itself which is kinda crazy lol I learned this a couple weeks ago from my Korean Grandmother who is 87 Y/O and is healthier than me at 20😂 She grows all her fruit and vegetables and never gets sick.

Also on either side of my two pomegranate trees there are very large oleander bushes should I take the time to digg out and around the oleander bushes that are within the closest of proximity to my pomegranate or will it not matter

Love your videos, I'm having rodent problems also . So along with traps try plain baking soda mixed with jiffy corn muffin mix, kills them quick. Also bazooka bubble gum also gets them.

@@TheBusyGardener I'm pretty sure they still make it, it's an old one but I was able to find it at a mom and pops store I stop at for like 5 cents a piece so I'd grab a dollars worth and throw where I thought rats traveled, I picked up 2 the first day. I'm not sure if you can use all gum I just know the Gardener that told me said Bazooka bubble gum

Every single one of my pomegranates split open and dried out. Not sure if it was not enough water or not. So I am going to install a drip system this coming spring. I also have a huge critter problem to deal with too. Hopefully next fall, I will have some to pick.

NOOOOO! Consistent watering is important for pomegranates, though the splitting can be caused by fungal growth as well. Even watering, and consider spraying with a copper fungicide when the fruit are starting to grow may help with the split fruit. For the pests, lead based treatment (Crossman, Daisy, or any other pellet gun) should do the trick 😂

Grow your plants on a big trellis. They will get more even sunshine and are easier to pick.

we have a pomegranate tree that produced one (1) fruit last year, and one (1) fruit this year. They are more orange in color. They one from last year was hard as a rock and never changed. The one from this year is still on the branch.

How old is that tree? Did it flower abundantly last season? There are lots of reasons it'll underperform, so consider some stressors like water (under or over watering), fertilizing, etc

@@TheBusyGardener I don't know how old it is (we just moved in last fall) There are only like 3 or 4 branches, which are maybe 20 ft long each. There was one bloom and one fruit this year. The yard does flood when there's good rain, but we're in semi-arid area so it goes sometimes many months without rain. Should i trim it way back and let new branches come out?

Hey Cameron, my pomegranate got infested by mealy bug this year. Tried sprays and were ineffective. Ultimately had to give it a good pruning in which I opened up the canopy. The bugs were gone within days.

Oh no! They might be immature/underripe. They might also not be getting enough sun to properly produce sugars. That said, some types of pomegranate are more bitter and astringent than others. If you don't like the bitterness, Sweet, Eversweet, and Parfianka are some that I've enjoyed a lot

I’m going to plant some of these next year. They are expensive as heck in the grocery store. I love eating them but I hate spending $2-$3 per fruit. I will treat myself to one of them once every year or 2 but I can’t justify getting them all the time. I recently found out that I can grow them in my area so I’ve been doing research on what varieties will grow best.

A HUGE plug for the Parfianka variety. It's so tasty, yet with seeds as soft as the pale types.

Parfianka is great variety for the backyard, mine has stayed relatively compact without aggressive pruning like some of my other pomegranate varieties

@@gardentips1249 I ended up getting 5 trees last year. Each of them were different varieties. They all died back to the ground. 4 of them came back at the beginning of the summer and they are trying to fruit. The biggest one is about a foot tall right now. I’ve been cutting the fruit off as I see it. I can tell they are going to be good producers in the future.

So jealous 😍. My Parfianca dropped all its fruit/flowers this year. It's only been in the ground 2 years so hoping it's just because it young. Do you prune your pomegranate trees at all?

Oh no! We got so blown out by pests this year, probably left with a total of 20-30 pomegranates between the 3 trees, so we're no stranger to pomegranate disappointment. I DO prune my pomegranate trees. Generally speaking, they produce at the tips of the branches, so creating as many tips as possible encourages more fruit. 2 years old IS really young for a pomegranate, and it took 3-4 years for our Parfianka to start fruiting reliably.

I have a fully grown men dwarf lemon tree a tangerine crossed with a orange tree and two pomegranate trees in my yard and have recently been worried for the overall health of my orange tree mainly due to possible case of the invavasive insect species the wooly white fly what can I do to ensure that my trees continue to fruit stay healthy my orange tree had went a whole three years without baring any fruit but this year it has fuited but the growth rate of some of the fruit seems to be stunted in growth compared to most of the fruit on my orange tree

This was really helpful.. I wasn't sure when to harvest.. so this was great! This is my first plant - it actually grew from my neighbor's tree (which is going crazy over my fence with fruit!!). I think its a Parfianka ...I transplanted the 'shoot/sucker' that was in my garden. It is about 3 -4 years old now and about 7ft tall by 4ft wide. I've just let it grow and not trimmed it. It only produced a couple flowers this spring (2022) - no fruit. My little tree needs to be trimmed/shaped... (I'm in SoCal). When is the best time to trim it and what is the best process to do that?

I'm good with the navel... but the lemon tree was here when we moved in and it was yellow and full of ants... It now has a good branch that's green and healthy but the rest of the tree is sickly looking... ugh thanks again!!!

I love pomegranates. My little tree has fruit for the first time! (I planted it about 4 years ago) The biggest fruit has cracked open. The pomegranate is still light red all over, and the seeds inside look more pink than red. But once its open do I need to pick it? I'm concerned it can now be invaded by insects or mold/fungus, etc. If so, I would rather try it at least to see how it is. But if I can leave it to ripen some more, I will. Your advice? Thank you

Generally speaking, you'll want to pick a pomegranate when it's split! That's usually a sign of inconsistent watering. It's hopefully ripe or close enough to ripe to still be good. Good luck!

I have a pomegranate growing it's about 3 years old, and it gave some pomegranates which are not quite ready to harvest. I don't have experience and growing them but I wanted to know can you keep it as a bush? If I continue or start to chop away at the top will it spread out and not up?

Sure; they’re happy to grow as a bush! Just cut them back to the shape and height you want during their winter dormancy.

Really depends! Most fruit trees begin consistently flowering/fruiting within about 3-5 years, but I've planted some which fruit within 1-2

What about Possums? Do I stand a chance of getting some ripen fruits? These night devils are making mincemeat of my lemons, eating the skins and leaving the flesh still suspended on the tree. I can't do anything besides setting traps, can't poison them either. What do you suggest?

Rodents are so clever, it's hard to keep them at bay. I'd say sprinkle Cayenne pepper all over the fruit, but then you'll be dealing with it when you harvest. You might get some results with putting Irish spring soap cut up into chunks in little muslin bags nearby. The scent is irritating to them

Living in the desert southwest, pomegranates grow well. My question in about fertilizing them. With citrus, which ripen in December through February, you don't fertilize after October 1 so you avoid a netal taste. I am asking when to cut off fertilizer for our poms. Do you have guidance on this?

I stop fertilizing all deciduous fruit when by early July at the latest. We want them to go into a solid dormancy and let their systems slow down for fall

@@TheBusyGardener, thank you. I am in Phoenix, AZ area, so we tend to have to deep water for several more months than less arid climates, but, in the case of pomegranates, if I am letting them mature from the spring crop, I agree that July may well be the latest I would fertilize.

My pomegranate seeds are bitter. Any reasons for this? Is it because it's first harvest? 😢

The fleshy parts of the "aril"? Or the hard seeds themselves? Usually means it isn't ripe enough. It also depends on the cultivar(variety). Some are naturally more astringent and need to be balanced with sweetness of the fruit.
