I'm a first time owner and I was thinking mine was getting tubby and now I know, because she checks off all those boxes to a certain degree, although thankfully not to the point of the poor overweight beardie you were showing. So I'm pretty sure my beardie is overweight. But she actually doesn't eat much, she's a picky eater, and won't eat veggies on her own unless I feed them to her. Any tips on getting a beardie to try more veggies? Are there other things that cause lizard obesity besides overeating? Is what I'm describing indicative that I may have to get her to a vet?

Thanks so much for this information! I actually had a heck of a time finding out if my juvenile breadie was getting a little thick. He is fine all over, except for his 'jowls'. They were pretty big and I couldn't find any information for a few days pertaining to them. After putting in Bearded Dragon Anatomy in google to see if they had a special name, I was linked over to your channel. Phew!! You're mention of Waxworms I think is the kicker for me. I wanted a more Mealworm diet, but my guy has no interest in them whatsoever, and I wanted to do a few less trips to the pet store each week for crickets so started getting Waxworms because a friend mentioned it. My dragon loved them (and now I know they are more of a treat! That cheeky dude!) so will go back to crickets again, and look at fat/protein/calcium levels in more types of insects. I heard crickets can go in the fridge to 'slow down' in movement and be easier to grab and stuff, but I don't know if they will also die quicker in there? If anyone knows, please share. That would be a better alternative if its a possibility.

Very helpful for us as we were judging by weight alone and weren't sure what the actual body signs of fat deposits were. Our lady beardie had pin worms when we got her. We treated her and thought she was just putting back her weight and figure. Whelp, she got full bodied and then some, and we were like maybe she is just a "german giant". Judging by your insight, we blew past where she was supposed to be. We were giving her a raspberry, a good helping of carrots and okra with her kale a day. A med-lg sized superworm or two a week. Nothing too over the top, but I guess that is just how getting to overweight works, even for us humans.

my mom feets riot, my beardie, too much and now she is overweight, and i just asked her how much she has been feeding her, POLITELY. she doesn’t even answer my question, and starts yelling at me for “blaming her”. she never states what im blaming her for, avoids the question, then tells me not to talk to her? now i have to fix riot’s diet so that she stays healthy, because she’s getting more and more overweight at an incredibly fast speed, which could shorten her lifespan and give her a lot of health issues. but if i tell her to stop feeding her, she’ll get more mad at me. help?

Why no more Hornworms? Hornworms have a super low fat content. Typically only 3% total in fat … they are full of water / moisture which is excellent for hydration. Wouldn’t depend on them fully for high levels of protein, coming in at about 9% … but definitely super low in fat.

Hello, my bearded dragon is overweight and I need some help. Every day I hand feed him greens with water and calcium and fill up his bowl. (He doesn’t eat out of his bowl much and doesn’t drink much water). In the evening I’ll feed him 12 dubias, crickets, or worms. Every other day I get him out and he’ll wander about some. He also usually just stays in one place the whole day in his enclosure. What tips do you have to make him healthier?

Im concerned even though my bearded dragon only has fat pads behind his front arms. His tail, and head however have no fat pads. Should I be worried? what should I do if my beardie is potentially gravid? other than a bit of fat pads on the arm pits and her head definitely is not as bumpy as the one shown above, she does have a tiny bit of a squishy tail... and X rays are extremely expensive... I'm afraid to cut out the black soldier fly larvae because it's a main source of calcium she gets but she does get a lot of kale, radicchio, collard greens, and the biweekly bits or skins of fruit

I got my dragon from someone who had him for 5 years and has been overfeeding him. They fed him like a growing baby beardie. Now I try to feed him super worms once a week (and halfling what his previous owners fed him) about 7-10. The issue is he is very picky. I offer him a lot of different veggies and he only takes a bite or two. There're so many different food portions claiming to be 'healthy' but they're so inconsistent, I dont know what is the correct amount...I want to help him lose weight and be happy but I dont know who's advice to follow

i’m gonna be honest with you, it seems like your “healthy” bearded dragon actually might be a slight bit too healthy lol. I am not an exotic reptile vet however I do have practical expertise regarding bearded dragons. Being said, I believe your obese bearded dragon is slightly obese, i’d estimate between 550-650 grams being max. But, your healthy bearded dragon looks like he could use a little more in his diet. his tail also seems to be developing metabolic bone disease, which is usually caused (and fixed) simply by not having enough efficient UVB/UVA exposure. I understand it can be costly, but it’s a necessity for the hobby/business. Other than that, I enjoyed your video and still found it informative nevertheless! Thanks for your time if you made it this far :)

What greens can you feed a beardie!
@nicholaspeterman9111
@nicholaspeterman9111 4 жыл бұрын
Arugula, watercress, collard greens, turnip greens, and mustard greens are all solid options. The first two aren't quite as good as the others due to lower calcium levels, but my dragons won't eat anything else so not quite as good is better than nothing at all. Butternut squash is also a good choice but cannot replace greens. Stay away from kale and spinach. Some sites suggest them, but they are wrong. Both (especially spinach) have a lot of oxalates. This reduces their ability to absorb calcium, contributing to metabolic bone disease. This can cripple them for life. Having a proper UVB setup is also essential fro preventing MBD. Live feeders should be dusted with calcium supplements often (not daily). The frequency depends on the supplement. Some have more in them (like vitamins) and should be given less frequently. Too much calcium is also an issue. Fruit should be fed only sparingly and specific types of fruit should be checked for further instructions. Blueberries for example, should never be fed whole because the skin is hard for them to chew. They can become lodged in the throat, requiring surgery.
