Chasing down an intermittent ignition problem can leave you pulling your hair out in the garage. Electrical components like coils that are sealed units may look fine on the outside but could possibly be completely fried on the inside. With the help of a multimeter you can run these simple tests to see if your coil is the offending culprit in your ignition woes.

I really appreciate these how to videos as I am now the owner of a 1992 sportster 883 & right now it runs just fine but I just know that one day I'll be trying to diagnose things like charging system, ignition system in fact I saw the video on coils as to single or waste spark systems as my bike does have that Cough I hear so much about. I'll be tuning into these videos asap,Thank you.

2000 sportster. i found my aftermarket RMP gage going carzy right before my coil went out completely.....well for months it was going nuts. needle flying everywhere over 3k rpms. new coil fixed it too. Now years later i have intermittent spark warmed up. cold is np but after warm random no spark and random duration until cooled down again. PIA

When testing the secondary windings on a single fire coil for Ohms, do you insert the probes on each of the towers, or is it from the middle (B) terminal of the primary windings to each tower at a time?

Hey there. Love all the stuff you do and I have a coil issue if you can help. I believe I have a 3ohm coil and getting a reading that shoots up and slowly settles back to around 5ohm. Could it be the problem. ?? Thanks and merry Christmas.

What about the coils that have a single wire with about 4 prongs. To be a little clearer you just have to pull the coil wire off the back of it and inside the connector there is 4 little prongs inside. How do you check those kind. My bike is a 02 deuce if that helps??

my 2001 XL1200c got no spark, tested the original harley coil with this method it reads 2.7 ohm, so i looked for a new OEM from ebay, but this new OEM only reads 2.8 ohm asked the seller he told me thats anywhere btwn 2.8 to 3.2 is very typical, is that true?

Hi I have a 2010 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Classic, I check the output reading of the ignition coil wires and I get 6.3 is this normal? I bought a new coil and it gives me the same reading

I have a 1990, 1340cc Evo that will crank but won't start, changed starter/plugs. started for a few seconds then died but will just sit and crank. Any suggestions?

My ohms on the out side are zero but when I shake connections from the multimeter it jumps up and down and then goes back to cereal once it’s still. Bad coil . I hooked up outside positive and negative with 12 V and got spark out of the spark plugs. But it looks like ohms are not there it’s old coil about 10 years old. Would you recommend just buy a new coil by a whole new Dyna S kit that I had before

Hey I have a 1996 Harley Electra glide and I tested my dyna single fire high output single fire 2 and it said 4.6 omes on both sides, is this ok ??

Thank you for your video testing the coil, mi 2015 Street right now I think I need the coil ,I do have 4 pin ,the two pin at the left give me a reading the two at the right don’t give me reading, Please can you tell me if he tha is the right way to do testing 4 pin a the back, thank you .

coil on an '08 Sportster is usually not the issue...Crank Position Sensor, however will be the most likely culprit/ and or spark plugs, I guess to answer your question...use a Noid Light...with appropriate Noid connected to coil connector, while cranking the engine the "Noid" if receiving proper voltage/ signal etc. it will flash...

Hello, I have a 2001 Harley Ultra and have no power to my coil, but when I put test leads on the coil connector, one in the center, then ground the other to the battery and turn it over I get 12v off and on. I am not sure of the coil gets 12v constant or does it get it only when the motor is turning over. The issue right now is I have no spark to the plugs at all.

The coil should be on 12v switched power. When the key/ignition is turned on the coil should have power.

@@jpcycles Ok thank you, now I have to just trace the wire from the coil back and see why I have no power to it. I will try and find a schematic if I can to see where it originates from and go from there.

Most last a long time. Lots of different reasons for them to go bad and unfortunately you don't get much notice when they do.

I've got a problem with the engine cutting out when slowing down or cruising.....runs great under acceleration., but almost always does at stop sign.. almost! Where should I start to fix this?

That’s my issue too. But it’s when my bike gets hot (after riding for about 1/2 hour). That’s when it wants to stall at a stop sign.

My 94 road king died on me last night, heard a pop then all lights on the bike started flashing really fast and the they went out and I heard another pop and the bike died and I got nothing electric working, not even the lights

Your Wrong! I tested mine and it tested fine according to specs. But it wasn't working right when it was running on the bike. Only 1 cylinder firing! So this test is totally INACCURATE!

heat can do weird stuff. mine was good cold and bad hot...FML. intermittent spark.

@@feltonwem it turned out to be loose connectors at the coil.i re soldiered them. . They looked fine but after removing them after 10 times they fell apart.
