How to Test a Thermostat | Thermostat Test Boiling Water
Watch as Budget Build Garage shares a Quick Tech Tip on "How to Test a Thermostat". This short but very helpful explanation of how thermostats work for vehicles will give you the knowledge to diagnose a thermostat. Using hot water to test a thermostat is the simplest way to test the thermostat operation allowing you to better determine and diagnose a thermostat to see if you have a faulty thermostat, or maybe a thermostat stuck open. If your vehicle is showing signs of a bad thermostat, its time to test it with some boiling water.

This right here. For the entire pump , you would put a clear funnel in the radiator and if it makes a bunch of bubbles 🍾 when giving it gas its good, If it stays flat its not opening. (The coolant- at operating temp)

Very informative. Here at Rev Tech we like to know exactly the fault. Sometimes we in the automotive industry tend to just replace it because it’s just what we do….these are some of the very basics that we miss or don’t try and end up wasting time learning what we forgot and costing the customer money and still don’t end up fixing the problem. Great video. Thank you

I learnt the hard way yesterday 😢 I finally got the truck assembled after a month of engine work and when I finally wanted it to start, the truck started overheating and then found out that the thermostat opened after 215 degrees and it’s rated for 195! Quick trip to AutoZone and got a better thermostat and boom, solved my issue

How do I check it before paying for it? Do they test it for u at the store before purchase (just asking cause Im clueless)?
@budvictoria
@budvictoria 28 күн бұрын
@changmark you have to pay for it first and check it home/shop or anywhere else you can have or make water boiling. I see that a thermometer is a must based on the comments above. Also check thar you are installing it correctly based on your vehicle.

I got one in the mail , oem gm , and it was just out of the small gm box rolling around in the shipping bag, (not in a shipping box but a bag), so before wasting a bunch of coolant, even though I know these things. I just like to check, thanks. I didn't like it may have been knocked around shipping but works and looks good.

Do you test if it's really open up at 82c? I'm concerned as my new thermostat don't start to open at the exact temperature, would it be interfere the engine cooling? As my radiator and condenser fan will try to maintain the engine temp at 85c while ac on

Just a tip tho, it can still appear to open and it be the problem, if the wax/guts is bad, worn springs or seals is bad it’ll cause issues but to the naked eye it’ll look like it’s opening and closing normally

tested 4 thermostats for my older classic. NONE of them opened at the stamped number! IE: 195 degree only partly opened at 205 degrees . had to hit boiling (212) before it opened more!! Finally, I checked a 180 deg. It opened at 195 deg and was fully open at 205deg. My engine requires a 195deg thermo. My car was always running hot. Don't know what's in there now, but ill be swapping it out! Thats how you check thermostats IMHO. 🙂

My only issue is that my car doesn't wanna warm up, we replaced it but acts the same thing, it'll warm up when it's hot outside but it takes it sweet time. But when it's 50°F out, it won't go past the halfway mark on the gauge

Do you have overheating problems? You should stick with the stock thermostat, engines are designed to run at their operating temperature to reduce wear. If you have overheating problems don't just lower the thermostat temp, fix the actual problem.

A couple things to be mindful here: A) never pour boiling water, or near boiling water, in glassware like that. B) Stant states that thermostats will START to open at their printed number, not be "fully" open. Fully open is 15-20F higher than what's printed. You've tested that it's fully open at 200F, yes, but you didn't test when it starts to open.
@danb.3397

If your Tstat isn't fully open within 5 degrees of the stated then you'll have a blown engine. Test them and see.

I want to know what make , model and year car you say takes a couple minutes to pull a thermostat. I guess if you don’t count the 20 min drain time ( after the half hour finding the drain) removing air box and snorkel, maybe a bracket or two (10 min more) then use your articulating tools arms and wrists to locate the 2or3 bolts holding the housing on ( variable time here if the engine is cooled off or not) to test the thermostat!? Throw it out after all that ……… oh I see this video was posted pre KZfaq in the late 70’s
