How to Test Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) on Honda Civic, CRX, Integra etc

Here's how to test if the throttle position sensor (TPS) on your Honda is operating correctly. This will work for most 90s Hondas including Civic, Integra, CRX, Shuttle etc that have D15, D16, B16 etc engines.
You will need a multimeter to test voltage.
With the key in the "ON" position (engine not running), you need to put the + probe of the multimeter on the red wire on the TPS plug (middle wire), and the - probe on the negative battery terminal, or other ground spot.
The multimeter should read close to 0.5v with the throttle closed, and 4.5v with the TPS at wide open throttle (WOT).
Also test to make sure the voltage climbs and drops smoothly as you open and close the throttle.
If any of this is not happening, you will either need to adjust the TPS by loosening the bolts and shifting it's position until the readings match the numbers above, or replace the TPS.

Been having horrible gas mileage. Absolute Throttle Position reads 9.4% on OBD ll scanner. (2004 Honda Civic LX 1.7 Sedan). Going to go through the steps outlined in. your video so I can figure out if the TPS is the problem or a symptom. Thank you for a clear explanation.

for the beginners, get some type of sowing pins and insert them behind the connector. Go on the outer part of the seal to not damage it. Make sure you push it in all the way.

First I would double check that your multimeter works are you are definitely contacting the wires correctly. If yes, then something is probably wrong with the TPS.

@@nefariousracing Yes, as the power supply shows 5 volts, but the sensor is 3.35. The car recently started to turn off when I am slowing down such as stop for traffic signal. Doesn't accelerate as usual.

On closed i got 0.43 All the way open 4.60 Is that okay?

Yeah that should be fine, a little bit of variance is normal.

I am testing a 2000 honda civic lx and its showing 0.6 on idle with tps. Is that normal?

0.6V should be normal. Try to clean the throttle & butterfly valve, some gunk there. It could be self relearn to compensate for reduce air flow for a good idling.
