Thinning out (or pricking out) plants is hard to do, but a necessary part of gardening. Thin out crowded and weak vegetable plants to give remaining plants room to grow. With a few simple tools gardeners can thin vegetable beds and increase their harvest as a result. Gardener Scott shows how he thins the plants in his vegetable garden beds. (Video #174)

Beets can be grown multi down. You can then harvest the largest 1 then harvest the remaining beets later. Charles Dowding does this all the time.

Your videos have helped me so much! I’ve had my mini garden for about 3 weeks and I have noticed the my bush beans have been to close to each other! So this video helped a lot I would love to see more “Bob Ross” videos. Even when I’m not doing to learn just for fun! This will help me get some bigger/healthier beans thanks Scott!

I used to thin out veggies without remorse. What really gave me a feeling of guilt was thinning out peaches!

Thanks for another great video Gardener Scott. I'm still very much a newbie, but something I figured out quickly is that large quantities of seed are cheap! Most of the time I buy 10-20 times more than I need, over-plant by a factor of 3-10 and thin as required. This method insures I utilize every square foot of soil and leaves me with thousands left over. I use the extras to grow microgreens during the times when my garden is not producing.

I,ve had pretty good success in carefully removing the carrots or beets and transplanting them to another spot ,but you've got to be very careful I've had good success where the dirt has fallen off and I just stuck the root in and they've grown..Thanks for doing what you do

i went out today and yanked out every broccoli, squash, beans, peas, some already producing, that were over growing the tomatoes peppers cukes lettuces that i really want. 1st year gardener, i sure expect that i have learned a lot this year. hope to do better by planting LESS next year. empty spaces were just sooo inviting and seeds so tiny, but i had no clue how big some plants grow. to top it off i dont really like squash!

Thank You for actually showing how to thin. It's hard to imagine what to do when you just hear someone say"Thin your plants".I always try to separate and replant the thinned plants.

That's actually a good idea. Just have an area you don't really take care of and drop all the plants that are pulled out in there, see what happens.

It works really well to direct sow many different types of plants into a single garden bed, as the plants don't all go after the same minerals, so they can stand to be a little closer together. If one of the plants ends up tasting bolty, then that is the one to remove, and you don't have an open space afterwards.

I thinned my very first spinach crop for the very first time...and it was tough. The ones that are left sort of fell over since they're not supported by their neighbors now, and I'm petrified that they won't perk back up. Even though I used snips they were also way too close and I did damage the leaves of some that remained, which concerned me.

I am in UK, and do No Dig and follow Charles Downing method of multi sowing Leeks, Beetroot, Onions, Spring Onions and Radish. But , we do thin carrots, lettuce, parsnips, etc. In UK mainly sow in modules to transplant out ,so spacing only an issue for direct sown. But I was curious about your Thinning and will watch with interest on the beets.

I use seed tape or pelleted seed for the fine seeds so as to not have to thin out.It does kill me to kill a plant , it goes against the natural thought but it is the best for the better plant, it took me some years to prune fruit trees , but once i did and saw the results i had no problem doing it.

Hello Mr. Scott, first i would like to thank you for all the video material you upload for the community, it is so helpful and easy to understand. I have created a great interest in agriculture during this last time, here in Chile, where I live, I cannot leave my house because of the quarantine, so I decided to start a gardening project, I am building a raised bed on my yard with the help from your videos. We are entering winter around here, so I am going to put a hoop with greenhouse plastic over the raised bed, to protect crops from the cold. Where I live the temperatures do not usually go down from freezing, if I use the hoop, what are a few crops i can plant during winter (starting them inside)? Your answer would help me a lot, I am sorry if the message was too long. Thank you very much in advance and greetings.

I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. Thanks! Consider growing plants that are not damaged by temperatures near freezing. Spinach, kale, beets, Swiss chard, radishes, lettuce, and turnips are among the plants that you should be able to grow.

Before you spray find out what bugs they are. Most insects are beneficial and you may harm some good bugs.

What is the zone you grow in? I’m so glad I found your channel this year. This was a very helpful video...this explains my lettuce bed and why I have larger plants near the bed edge because those plants have more soil to grow in and the others need to be thinned more. I have very much enjoyed your videos and the information in them🥰

Dear Gardener Scott, when planting the three sisters, in what order should I plant them? Is it' corn, wait a week, squash, wait a week, then beans, or what? Will they work in a rectangular format or should I use a circular one? May I use Kandy Korn, Scarlett Runner beans (pole variety), Garden Spineless squash? Would Table King Bush Acorn squash do better?

I start with the corn, wait a week or two and then sow the squash and beans at the same time. They all grow quickly, but it's nice to have the corn a little taller to trellis the beans when they start getting big. You can grow any varieties you want and any format you want, but I find pole beans and vining squash look better together. I usually do one squash and three beans (in a triangle) per corn stalk.

You can amend your soil over a long time period or build a raised bed and fill it with good soil.

It depends on the plant, but many of them can be repotted.

I have plants in beds like yours. Compost was put on the top. They are growing but the leaves are turning yellow. Is there anything I can do about this. On my egg plants there are tiny black bugs. What can I use on them? Thank you

Check your soil moisture level to see if it;s too wet or too dry. It could be flea beetles. Search for those and see if that's the insect and how to control them.

Thank you… again! My seedlings are growing gangbusters thanks to your tutelage. I now know more about thinning and will be checking the carrots, onions and radishes tomorrow morning! I just finished watching your video on hardening off again to be sure that I am doing it correctly (wish I had watched it before I sunburned the starts I bought at the nursery 😢). I am about a week away from planting my tomatoes in the garden. Does it matter if I put the same varieties next to each other or stagger them (e.g. Valencia-Striped German-Gin-Fizz, etc? I am also planting little orange currant tomatoes. Should I plant them in an area by themselves? On a separate note, you have shared your expertise with us freely. You can plant different tomato varieties next to each other. I do it all the time.

Instead of just leaving an unwanted second plant, like the Zucchini, I would try to plant it again on a different place.

That can be an option based on the plant and its size. Many plants don't transplant well before they develop their first true leaves.

I literally can’t find an answer on google for my question so I came here. Can you cut a tomato plant or any plant at the soil line because you planted store bought seedlings together and now they’re growing large too close to each other? Maybe 3-5 inches from each other? Or can you cut it out with a shovel and remove the roots too. My fear is damaging the intertwining roots? What should I do if my plants are too close to each other in a raised garden bed and are about 1-2 feet tall now? We just planted the seedlings we bought that were growing together in a small pot from the store. I now realize there are three separate plants growing basically right next to each other. Any advice would help. Thank you

Yes, you can cut plants at the soil line. That will kill most plants and give the remaining plants room to grow, even with the roots left behind. I wouldn't use a shovel because it can disturb the plant roots nearby.

You can still thin. When the carrots get bigger it may be easier to pull out the ones you are thinning. The bigger roots are less likely to disturb each other.
