Today I'll show you in five easy steps how to thread ratchet straps together, tighten them down, lock them in position and loosen them up when you're done. Securing loads with ratchet straps is a must know skill and after this #shorts video you will use them like a pro. In future videos I will go into detail on how to rig different loads for safe and secure transport. Stay tuned.

Best to leave your strap threaded through the ratchet but not tightened. That way when you need to use it it’s already set up. Unless you’re dealing with 4” straps then just roll them up

Why do people insert the strap in the rachet with it open? You have to feed it through the spool then back through the handle. Fold it shut with the slot facing across then slide the strap through and start ratcheting and you're done. No double feeding.

Wrong. But every one, even truck drivers I've watched over and over do it wrong so.. don't blame you.. Ratchet until slot is 90 degrees with frame. Close ratchet. Thread strap thru from back to front. Fit and hook what you are ting down. Start ratcheting while still just a turn loose as to get a loop of slack around the spindle. This will help bind the strap to itself and keep it from relasing and sliding thru the spindle. Hold excess in line with tightened strap while ratcheting. Many people just tighten and it starts running off line and eating the strap casing damage to strap, ratchet or hindering strap from tightening all the way. Do not over tighten, you can bend parts of the vehicle or crush item being stapped. But you dont want it flapping in the wind. Tie off excess. You can be pulled over if your load does not look safe or properly strapped...and straps flying around like streamers just looks bad. Have sufficient amount of straps for what's being tied. And straps rated for the weight. check periodically especially on long trips, things shift and loosen up often, specially heavey awqward things. If you keep them rolled up when storing, I some times use electrical tape, you can toss them out like a yoyo when it's time to use them again. Kinda fun, especially with the bigger 10k lbs straps and saves alot of time. A pile of them knotted together is a nightmare.

It's easier to lay the buckle handle flat against itself with the slot to secure at a 90°to it or upwards. Then pass the loose end up through the slot back towards the length snug before ratcheting tight.

Maybe the issue isn't the straps. I'm sure you know this but you want to get at least to wraps when you're tightening the ratchets. Maybe your load is shifting which is causing the loose straps. If you have one or two straps at an angle in front of the load and one or two at an angle in the back then the load can't shift and come loose.
