Coach is spot on in my opinion. I learned thesame grip from a Dodger. Been throwing a 12-6 CB for 15 years as of yesterday for a complete game. It takes practice and consistency. Great video! I would add step 4 a consistent follow through "finish"

Nice job coach. I would add one recommendation that all my pitchers have found very helpful: set your hand and wrist position in the glove before the pitch. A cue I give young pitchers is when we throw a FB our index and middle finger are on top and thumb on the bottom of the ball when our hands break but with the CB our index and middle finger are on the side. A good drill to master and maintain the grip uses the "flip" or "wrist" drill and a training aid called the Spinner, or a hockey puck, or a baseball painted on one side. I allow my pitchers to use the forearm, so we call it the hinge drill and use all of our grips when performing it. The pitcher places his glove under his throwing elbow at shoulder level and using only the forearm delivers the ball. You can perform a lot of reps with this drill because it produces little to no stress or fatigue on the shoulder and elbow. The great thing about the Spinner ($20) or a hockey puck ($1) is it provides visual feed back and challenges the player. If you do it properly the Spinner when released will stay almost vertical with very little tilt, with a tight (not wobbly) 12-6 spin. Works for the FB as well with opposite spin. Players can do this together or about 10' off a wall and if done correctly, the disk will come directly back every time.

THere's a drill I used to do in college where without even throwing the ball I'd work on generating the curveball spin. If the spin was end over end I knew I had the snap and finger movement correct . If the spin was not full end over end I knew I didn't get on top of the ball enough,. You are pulling with your index and middle fingers and pushing with your thumb . THis drill made all the difference in the world and helped me gain consistency throwing the best curve

Dineth Altmann I figure it out. The video doesnt tell you the most important part. Its really easy to throw curveballs, Just do the curveball grip but instead of pointing your hand forward, point it towards your face(palm MUST be facing right if youre a righty, and left if youre a lefty), as if you were doing a handshake. Theres no flicking you wrist to the left or right, just down. When you throw it should be a curveball, not necesarilly straight since you need to practice for more control.

i know im late to this, but heres my take i personally grip my slider and curve the same. its not a 12-6 though its more like a 2-10 and my slider has maybe has a .5 to a 2 inch break in it. it just depends on how hard i throw it. i dont have a cannon so its not fantastic but it works. i grip them both like im throwing a 2 seam and i just throw them from different points. like my curve is more overhand and the slider is more 3/4. i still get the red dot on both it just moves different. so i can fool batters and maybe punch them out most of the time i just throw it as a first pitch cause in my experience the all expect a 4 seam from me cause its only about 78-80 at the most.

nguyen this is to you, its in regards to your knucklecurve. heres a funny for you i throw a knuckle as a third pitch but i cant throw a knucklecurve or rather i cant control it. i suffer from rick ankielitis when it comes to that. thought you might get a kick out of that.

Another way to get more bite is to pull your forearm straight down while gripping onto the ball with your middle finger. DON'T BREAK YOUR WRIST, but pull the ball down like pulling a lampshade. This is how Nolan Ryan threw his 12-6. You'll get a lot of hitters swinging up out of their shoes when it's in the dirt. Good K pitch to get them to chase. Good luck!

I have a 12-year-olds team that I coach and they want to throw curve balls and some are quite good at it. I am teaching them to not "doorknob" or twist in any way. Is this an OK age to throw this pitch? I've read quite a bit about how curve balls are not the cause of all of the arm problems, but I do think throwing it wrong causes problems faster.
@konniemac316
@konniemac316 9 жыл бұрын
Good video. Especially when you have good form off the rubber. You don't even really need to move your arm much. Just let your legs drive you and have the proper hip rotation. Your arm will follow naturally. There should be more torque in your shoulder than your elbow. Just keep practicing and you will definitely get the feel of it.

I was a LHP, and no one ever really taught me how to throw a proper, effective curve. I would compare learning to throw a curve to learning to kickflip on a skateboard... it seems impossible until on day it just clicks. Timing.. positioning, just the feel. So if you want to throw a nasty curve.. you need to practice it. Not just on the mound. Like.. when you are laying in bed before you go to sleep, spin that ball off your middle finger up in the air, and catch it. Do 100 a night. Get that mechanics to be muscle memory, and then you know it and really can't unlearn it.. or go back to when you didn't know it

another way to throw a great curveball is turn your palm so that it is facing the batter as your arm passes your head. right before your arm passes your head as you're throwing it, the top of your hand should be facing the batter. your palm is facing second base. and you release it like a yo yo. as you release it the top of your hand is facing the ground and the palm facing the sky. it should have a huuuge break!! try it! there is no problem if your palm is facing the sky. every person is different. I threw it this way and got a far bigger break than the way it's thrown in the video. just try it
