Matthew: so great to see your video, I am always learning something new. So true that if you start with a wider and lower opening you are already half way there! It reduces the production time considerably, and makes it much more fun. I will have to try to reverse the wheel direction, and see how it works. It looks awesome as you do it! Thank you again for taking the time to share your skills with all of us. 😊

Perfect timing for finding this specific video! I’ve thrown a nice pitcher, albeit it’s not very large & I’ll pull a handle tomorrow for it. I attempted to make a bowl for the pitcher to sit in. The bowl was started as a cylinder & of course, it fell. I tried again & it fell again. Sooooooo, either later tonight or sometime tomorrow, I’ll be attempting to throw the bowl like you show here. I hope it’ll work. If it doesn’t, I’ll continue to fail better as I work toward my goal.

interesting to see another switch the wheel direction. I’ve been throwing for almost 20 years and have always centered right handed, pulled left handed, and shaped back at right handed. For me it was more just that I could never really figure out the pulling right handed though

Nice. Do you let it sit a long time before separating from the bat, or do you do a wire cut pretty much at this stage? Seems like it would be quite delicate for some time.

Thanks for sharing this! Very helpful. Why do you use a wood rib on the bottom of the bowl when you are centering the clay?
@georgesampson4714
@georgesampson4714 Жыл бұрын
I'm glad to see that even the Pro's have the ball of clay slip off the bat once in a while. After opening to a bowl shape when you start the first pull and are pushing the base in quite strongly with the outside hand how do you prevent a bump from forming in the smooth curve on the inside where the wall meets the base? I always end up with a bump that I have to "trim" off by removing clay.
@MatthewKellyPottery
@MatthewKellyPottery Жыл бұрын
Yea I didn’t clean the bat a tad before throwing it down. Was gonna remove that portion but thought it would actually help, haha. When I push in strongly at the base I’m also aggressively pushing back on the inside. I almost pull more from the inside than the outside.
@MatthewKellyPottery
@MatthewKellyPottery Жыл бұрын
That helps pull that clay from the bottom and not leave the hump on the inside.

How wide (as thrown) was this wide bowl? I’m getting ready to order my kiln and am vacillating betwee an 8 sided kiln (15” shelves) and a wider 10 sided kiln (20” shelves) kiln. Kiln, wheel and golf cart need to fit in a single wide bay of the garage.
@shellydumont9251
@shellydumont9251 11 ай бұрын
@@user-mc3zq8zl9n mine is 12 inches bisque fired, which I had to do sideways. I have a skutt 614-3. It is very small because I didn't want to deal with the expense of an electrician for a bigger kiln yet. Personally I'd go with the bigger of your two options. That's what I'll do in the future. I love making large pieces. Good luck with whatever you choose!
