A truckers hitch (or better yet, a modified truckers hitch - going through the loop twice) is a great tensioning knot. However, with tents and tarps, where the material tends to "relax" after a bit, you are better off with an adjustable tensioning knot like the Adjustable Grip Hitch or the Taut-line hitch, which is a much better choice. This will allow you to adjust tension as your nylon tent material relaxes. With tarps, place your adjustable knot at the tarp tie-out, this way if it's raining, you don't need to get out of your tarp over to the stake to adjust, you adjust at your tarp.

What about a 'Trucker's knot' that is adjustable in an instant with just pulling harder on the tail which hangs freely and is not slip half hitched back up as they show here?

I’d much rather have the power of the trucker’s hitch than the adjustability of the taut-line.
@johnfelps2573

Beg to differ. Bowline and taut line is what I started with, but they do not hold up in high wind (Neither AGH+TLH are recommended for secure rigging). I have transitioned to a slipped highpoint hitch for the anchor and the modified trucker's hitch with two half hitches and rarely do high winds take down my rigging. Rather than try to adjust tension post rigging (which you can actually do without much effort with a trucker's hitch), just get it right the first time.

You also need to find a stone that has a tent stake in it. If you can pull the stake out, you will become king or queen - whichever you prefer.

This hitch is very easy to get wrong and end up with a slip knot! What wasent made clear the most important part that when making the second loop to go through the first it has to be made the reverse of the first loop they show , the the line crossing under not on top of the loop which would make a slip knot! Oh so simple I hear you say, but very easy to get wrong! Also if done correct the knot releases easy !

You're dead on here Steven. Great knot for securing a load, or packing(truckers hitch). But it's way simpler to just use the knot meant for this. The Taut line hitch. Two half hitches tent/ fly end. A taut line at the staked end. It's gads easier to take up the slack as well. Invariably one line will give in slack. You just grab the taut line, and pull up.

@@Schralenberger taut line knots don't have the three to one mechanical advantage this truckers hitch offers... I have more faith in this version of the trucker's hitch and bowline for securing loads but for a tent, a tautline is perfect in most cases to tighen the line.

Don't use the slipknot or any other based around the square knot. You are building a 3-1 system, capable of tension enough to lock up that square knot. Your slipknot will never slip again.

You kind of missed the whole point of this knot. Use it to amplify the force on the rope. You use multiple loops so that it acts like a pulleys and amplifies your force. If you have a solid post to attach to and a good strong long line you can pull a car out of a ditch with a 12 year old. Trucker (or truckee) hitch is a not required for a tent. A taught line hitch is better and simpler.
@jakeski3142
@jakeski3142 2 жыл бұрын
You don’t need that much force for the purpose here. This is for camping, not being a trucker hauling nuclear missiles. And taut-line hitch doesn’t get it tight enough for a ridgeline in many opinions

@810PRODUCTIONS
@810PRODUCTIONS 3 жыл бұрын
Mark Pope - I would recommend that you learn how to focus on the subject material, such as the rope, because this video is about the rope, and not the person tying it. Thus why 180 does not apply here. If you were trained by people such as the person that states the following """If you don't follow the 180 Degree Rule, or break it intentionally, it disrupts the scene and disorients the audience""", congrats, you are brainwashed into conformity. Curious, when there is text that takes up half of the screen on top of a scene of one or more people, does 180 still apply?

@@rocketsurgery8337 With your logic people are only supposed to use knots for where they originated. A bowline or taut line hitch should stay with sailing and timber hitches should stay with lumberjacks and arborists. If the knot works for the application why not use it? You can't sit there and tell me you haven't used a bowline outside of sailing because if you have you're being a hypocrite of your own advice.

Wrong. "A knot is used to join two ropes together or a rope to itself. If done correctly a knot will hold shape regardless of it being fixed to something else. A hitch is used to fix a rope to another object, such as a carabiner or pole, and relies on that object to hold."

Agree, now you had a knot in the line that may be very hard to get out. Instead of tieing the loop just go around or through your anchor , then tie it normally. I always found this knot had to teach.
