I transported my bike across the country with no problems at all. I am amazed at how secure and centered the bike is by only strapping it down using only the two points of the fork. Thank you!

Those are overkill straps! They are the toughest out there. When transporting a bike of this size, weight, and accessories “overkill” is just what you need! I also knew you looked to knowledgeable to not secure the back as it could slide around allowing for it to fall if slid sideways far enough. “Back Pressure” is plenty as opposed to tight ratchet downward. Listen to this man folks, transporting bikes of this magnitude is no joke. Job Well Done!

Good work and good explanations why each step you're doing is a good idea. One thing I'd add (since some people might not be familiar with this type of strap) is that to get a good, secure lock, the user must get at least one loop of strap around the center spindle of the ratchet as the strap is pulled in before it "bottoms out" tight. Also, when you have the correct tension, the handle must be pushed back all the way until it clicks up against the ratchet frame - in the direction opposite as it's pulled to tighten it. I know most people experienced with motorcycles know this, but since it can be a "fatal error" if someone gets it wrong, I thought it might be helpful for it to be mentioned.

Did this process precisely as you described, '93 Fatboy into a floor bolted chock, inside a Haulmark 5x8 trailer, from San Diego to San Antonio...the bike n e v e r moved, stayed locked in. I popped the doors and inspected at each fuel stop. There's no need to compress the forks folks!

No one should consider strapping by the lower tube. Its not good for them. Use the handlebars, fork tube between the clamps or add some tie down loops to the bike. The middle of the fork is a terrible idea. On the bike in the video the light bar (if its not just cosmetically strong) or even the forward part of the frame would be better.

I strapped my big Harley Electraglide this way and used 2 more at the back under the tour pack brackets. When I got to Childress TX. I noticed my bike had shifted about 4 inches from the front of the trailer but it didn't tip over. I think this happened because I was making the rear straps way too tight. So I just focused on the front ones. I stopped frequently for leg stretches and load strap checks. But from Austin Tx. all the way up to Minot ND. then across to Williston ND. not any major issues. Over 1600 miles.

love your videos and i still believe in this method but i just did this for a 60 mile tow with my 15 dyna and about 30 miles after unloading it my fork seal blew. The front wheel did turn a little bit so i wonder if the added pressure was too much on that side while the suspension worked down the road. I was pulling down at about 60 deg angle and have seen you do it with more side pull than i had so my only explanation is that the bike shifted and i should have secured the wheel better.

In my experience it is better to strap to the triple trees than the fork tubes. While this method is tight I would be concerned about damage to the forks from the pressure sideways. On the triples it is downward like when braking . A good wheel chock would make it solid like a rock - Adding a couple of straps to the back end on the rear crash bars or passenger grab handles or the frame will also lend support. Compress the suspension with the strength of the ratchet movement. My 2¢ .
@tedbaxter5234
@tedbaxter5234 Жыл бұрын
Agree with you. Additionally, a broader stance to tie down points, triangulation, is important to me. His point about damaging suspension by compressing it says to me, if you have a problem, you already had suspension problems. I’ve been trailering motorcycles since 1970, his product may be viable, but intuitively it makes me uncomfortable. To each his own.

The straps you buy elsewhere are 2 piece. These are one piece. The ratchet clasp is permanently attached, and the other end is available to feed through the load and bring back through the same ratchet clasp. This makes them stronger and easier. These are wide and thick. They feel heavier duty than the store-bought ones. I just strapped my big bike down for the first time with these and was pleasantly surprised. Before I was having to compress the forks almost fully down to the point of bottoming out. This can’t be good for them. These are not pulling the bike down, they are securing the front wheel. I weigh 300 lbs and I sat on the bike and rocked side to side. Only the trailer moved. Not a gimmick. Not a joke. Just try a set. It’s not gonna break the bank!

@bigsnik1
@bigsnik1 3 жыл бұрын
I realize this is 2 years old, and you may not have the bike still or may have your own way to do it by. Ow but with my air ride, I built a 2x4 brace (3 2x4s stacked and screwed together the with of my bike frame). Pulled the bike up on the trailer, slid the 2x4s under the bike toward the front, dropped the air ride so the bike lays frame on the 2x4s.... then strap down like this guy explains. This way there is zero down pressure on your suspension and with the bike strapped down to the 2x4s it's as sturdy as the trailer itself. I've hauled my street glide like this with no wheel chalk and itdodntmove an inch

I've always used made-for-motorcycle tie downs with the hook on both ends and hooked over the handlebars, compressing the front forks. Is there something technically wrong with this technique?
@brucebear1
@brucebear1 4 жыл бұрын
You don't really get the forks compressed enough to take out all the slack (at least it's very difficult - and if you do you'd be putting all the stress on the internal dampener components inside the fork slider mechanism) and that leaves the motorcycle free to bounce around. If one strap breaks, becomes dislodged, or fails in any way (not likely but if you're looking at your bike upside down in a ditch, saying "that's not likely" won't make you feel a lot better), the other one is just loose at the end of a big long heavy thing flopping around. . With this system, even if one strap fails or comes loose (much more unlikely since it's not dealing with a long, bouncy, springy tie down point), the front wheel is held by the chock and the other solid strap. I wouldn't run it 100 miles with only one strap like that but you have a good chance of getting off to the side of the road to make emergency repairs or adjustment before your motorcycle goes in the ditch. . I always do an intermediate side tie down as he shows on the side crash bar but that's just an added safety point. The real work is done by the front two tie downs. . Compressing the front suspension just isn't the best way to go, for the reasons he shows here.
@biofractal78

My two cents: I like the idea, but there are few caviats. First you are relying solely on the bolts that supporting the fender. I don't know you, but relying my entire bike weight on those four bolts is not for me. Plus not all bikes can be towed like that. I agree is a great addition but if I'm tying down the wheel one better use the actual rim which has more structural integrity. Again just my two cents. And I transport big motorcycles on a regular basis.

@lakefviltuk1681
@lakefviltuk1681 4 жыл бұрын
Saying this method is solely relying on the bolts for the fender is not true. Just taking advantage of the shape of the fork at that point. the stress is being put on where the fork connects to the wheel/rest of the bike.

Drill ya two holes on each end of that ramp and into the back of the trailer. Drop in two bolts long enough so they won't bounce out if it pops in transfer. That's what I've got in the tailgate of my PU for my ramps. Never move

You backed the bike off the trailer without commentary except, just before, you said something about making a mistake "just once". This sequence confused me (not hard). Are you somehow using the straps to back the bike off the trailer? Were you braking by running the motor and slipping the clutch, or just applying the front brake? Thanks!
@Clickmaster5k
@Clickmaster5k 5 жыл бұрын
You don't have to run the motor to use the clutch as a brake and if its not running the clutch can then stop the rear tire when the bike is going forward or backward. Its helpful for any time you have to push a bike and you want have easy access to the rear brake (like a slippery wet trailer ramp).

I would run a strap from one side to the other over the Main Motorcycle seat . Put a towel on the seat if you think the seat may get damaged from the strap. My straps are the very wide yellow cargo type straps. Their twice as wide as what is used in this video. ( Better safe than sorry ). This will keep the Motorcycle from flipping up and over if the Tow Vehicle hits something real hard. Also make sure you lock your Motorcycle steering with the front wheel straight. This will also help keep the bike from scissoring and falling over.

sorry to bang on about this, your method may work but it's not the most secure. look at 3:35 when you push the bars the whole bike wobbles. Your method leaves everything above your loops around the slider acting as a lever. You want it truly secure anchor across the top of the forks. Sure you have to watch out for scuffing but this is the most secure method. Still big enough to say ERK is a great site.

Those chains though lol. I always put a strap on the rear tire to hold it in place. By DOT Law you have to 2 straps on every item on the front or rear item of a load. Or 1 strap every 10' feet. If you where to get into an accident without a strap on the rear you are gonna get sued eazy peazy lemon squezy.

i was actually rear ended before and the bike never moved, but a strap on the back is a fine idea. especially for lighter bikes

Do you leave the bike on first gear so it doesn't roll backwards?
@Srkcycles

i do leave the bike in 1st gear but there no chance of it rolling backwards unless you were to tie it down on an incline. but while its fully strapped it wont roll anywhere.

You made an all new one of these how to wrongly load a motorcycle videos? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jM5lrbJixMXTfpc.html The middle of the forks probable the worst place to ratchet strap too. Forks are not designed to have constant pull forward and outward. Pulling there makes the bush inside push hard on the tube as the bikes suspension moves around during the town it will wear out the fork much faster than normal riding. Plus you left the kick stand down, again its not designed for the dynamic load of the entire bike it just meant to prop up some of the weight. If you want a floppy wobbly fucked up kickstand this is the fastest way to it. You done 10k or 4.4k staps to hold a bike DOWN. You need ones that are easy to use correctly that protect your bike and speed up loading. Iv never seen anyone do something like this with a bike that needs to perform go to a track and see what people do to transport race bikes. Dirt or street they are not putting car tiedowns around the middle of the forks.

srk is a fraud, and sponsored by gorrila I assume. any straps will work, and there are much better instructional videos out there. this is pathetic.
