Many skaters (and parents) seem to struggle with lacing their boots correctly. I typically demonstrate proper lacing for my skaters (and skating parents) in person. But, many of you have told me that you wanted a video on tying skates. Even experienced skaters or skating parents can learn something from this video!

It took me almost one year to realize that I wasn’t lacing my Edea’s correctly; It felt uncomfortable it was difficult to skate, I knew was something wrong. And my bunion was hurting😢.I had to educate myself about Edea boots. My advice would be; take your time and educate yourself about them, watch videos. This video opened my eyes i am so relieved and more confident.

I'm glad it helped you! I've seen so many skaters lacing them incorrectly and then the boots breakdown prematurely and they are upset about it. IMO - the dealers could do a better job educating the buyers at the time of sale too!

Great! My daughter is 3 years old. I’m not even sure where she heard about skating but she is all about it. She had her first lesson last week. I took her to a skate shop yesterday and bought her first pair of skates. This is super helpful- especially about the tip to not leave them in the car. (I leave everything on the car). I’m about an hour away from that Polar shop- maybe one day we will take a ride and check it out. Thank you!❤

I got my first Edea skates the other day and wore them during a free session at my local rink, before my next lesson. I was just trying to get used to it and this hockey player (who said he also teaches figure skating even though he has no experience with figure skating, so he said) stopped me and told me that my skates were too lose and asked me to pull over so he can re-lace them for me. From the starting point till the ankle hooks, he pulled them so strong, so tight, my feet started getting numb instantly after a minute seconds and they were in so much pain, I had to take breaks every 30 seconds and hold on to a fence, literally shaking. With each of his pull, my body would perform a small jump because of the pain and I had to squeeze my fists to endure. Not even a finger would fit neither the front or the back of the ankle section. He said this was how it was suppposed to be and I had to endure it and I didn't question anything trusting his "wisdom". I really wish I watched this video before or at least wait for next lesson :( I'm thankful for the helpful information!

I’m not a skater, but this is interesting. During the recent Winter Olympics, I somehow ended up watching some KZfaq videos of past Olympic skaters. I saw one of Tonya Harding in 1994 having lace issues. She started her routine, but apparently something was wrong with her laces. She started crying and stopped skating and went to speak to a judge, and was showing her the problem. They gave her some time to fix the lace problem, and then she came out and skated again. I think I read she had broken a lace, but it had not been replaced with the proper type or something. I can’t imagine the panic and frustration… Well, at least her kneecaps were ok… 😳
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and commenting! Yes, she did break a lace, which is why it’s so important to replace them regularly. Skaters are allowed 3 minutes for interruptions due to an issue like that. That’s still a rule today.

@ Wow! Three minutes is not that long! Amazing she got back on the ice and managed to center herself and perform as well as she did. Thanks for all of your videos! I love to watch skating. Many thanks for making this useful and important video! My Risport RF3 started developing some ankle creases lately even though my way of lacing seems like what you suggest in this video. I got the impression that a bit creases is normal. Am I right? If not, please correct me. On the other hand, if a bit creases is normal, then how much is too much? What might have caused it? I guess the answer might be improper lacing. Anyway, I’d appreciate your insights about how to fix the issue.
11 ай бұрын
Traditional boots like Risport are designed to crease to allow you flexibility. It's part of the breaking in process. When you feel a noticeable lack of support and resistance to your bend, that's when the boot has broken down. If you are are unsure, ask your skate tech and coach to have a look. Edea is different though - if an Edea boot develops a crease, it is done, as is it not designed in the traditional way and only bends in the tongue. If a boot is breaking down prematurely it could be that it is too big as there will not be enough foot volume to fill up the boot so there is nothing to stop the boot from bending - this is true of both traditional boots (like Risport) and Edea. That's why its so important to get fitting by a trusted tech in-person for your boots. Improper lacing can also cause the issue but that is typically more of an issue when it comes to Edea as many skaters do not lace and tie their skates the "Edea way."

Great video thank you! I just got my first pair of Edea skates (wave) as I’m starting figure skating lessons soon! I have never practiced with my own skates so this video was very helpful. I feel like in the Edea boots if I move my ankle left to right (kind of left and right sides of the blade) my ankle moves, is this normal?
Жыл бұрын
Edea is designed to provide lateral support so your ankle shouldn’t wobble side to side as you shift your weight. The Wave has soft to mid support that is best for beginning skaters. Depending on your size and strength you may be better served by a stronger boot. However it could also be that the laces need to be pulled tighter at the mid portion. Check if they pull up if you tug on them.

@ I watched a video where it is explained that the ankle must be moved left-right and I have the same situation, I have to tie very strong in the ankle (the last hold). I think Edea is for wide ankles. There isn't information about this. Can you show how is moved simulating edges? (ankle, not the heel)
Жыл бұрын
I'm unsure what you mean with the ankle moving left-right. The ankle is meant to be lose in Edea - that's how they are designed - not because they are for wide ankles but because they allow for more range of motion. I do not have wide ankles at all and I have worn Edea skates, daily, sometimes for 5 or 6 hours straight, for 7 years without issue. I'm really unsure what you're asking for when you say, "you would like me to show how is moved simulating edges (ankle, not the heel)."

Hi Aimee, I recently got edea ice flys! They’re a size 250C and I was given lace size 240 (which is correct) However, when I lace them they’re far too short and I am unable to make a bow and properly tie them at the top. Is it worth it to go a size up in laces? Or am I lacing them wrong? Or are they not tight enough? Thank you for the video! :)
Жыл бұрын
With a 250 boot, the 240 lace size is right on the cusp of the next size (260). HOWEVER, I wear 245 in Ice Fly, Concerto, and Piano - which is one size down from you. I have plenty lace to tie them properly! In fact, I have extra so I go back around the middle hooks a second time. You could be lacing them incorrectly. But, my first thought is that they are not tight enough. Check to see if your lacing moves when you run your fingers over it, or if you can pull the lace up easily over the bottom portion once they are tied.

Why don't ice skaters use waxed laces? I use them for my roller skates, and started using them with my ice skates, and it's so much easier to tie!
13 күн бұрын
Competitive and instructional figured skate manufacturers engineer their skates to work with specific laces. With Edea, for example, because of the lateral flexion design, waxed laces can actually cause the skates to break :(

Why do laces haved to be changed every time blades are sharpened?
2 жыл бұрын
Because they wear out. Changing them each time you sharpen your blades will ensure that your laces are in good shape. And prevent your boots from breaking down prematurely.

Are all the brands of boots laced the same way? You have Risport and others in the title, but only showed Edea. Are Risport and Jackson boots laced and tied differently? I have Risport boots, but I like nylon laces, so I have Harlick laces

@ how do you do the top part for skates other than edea? You mentioned for that part edeas are different but not what the other skates were like. Thanks!

What I explained is that you do it the same way, but you pull tighter with Jackson and Riedell. Risport is in between - not as tight as Jackson and Riedell and not as tight as Edea. I explained that while I was tying my boots. I only have Edea - so, I can't demonstrate the other brands - the best I can do is explain it as I am showing you how I do my boots.

Are any brand of figure skating boot laces made of 100% cotton?
2 жыл бұрын
I honestly have no idea! You should use the brand of laces that is made by the same manufacturer as your boots to ensure that they will provide the intended support. If the brand uses cotton, that’s because they’ve determined that it’s what works best. But if they use another material, it’s because it’s what will best serve the design and for the boot to perform as intended. I suggest that you use laces that are made by the same brand as your boots for the best performance.

But how do i tie jacksons? First 3 holes loose and then tight up to the hooks? Then what? Tie the hooks super tight too?
Жыл бұрын
As I explained in the video, with traditional skates like Jackson and Reidell, pull laces snug that are laced through the holes.Cross, pull and hook laces. Continue crossing, pulling, and hooking until you have reached the top of the skate. Laces should be snug at the toes, tight across the ankle, and snug again to the top of the boot. Do not skip any hooks. If laces are too long, lace back down the hooks and tie at the ankle - do not wrap the laces around your ankle.

@Aimée Ricca thank you! I have problems that my feet hurt within like 10minutes but if I loosen the ties a bit i feel wobbly on the skates. Not sure if it's just my balance that sucks or if the skates are too loose then
Жыл бұрын
If you are wobbly, the skates are not tied correctly. Where do your feet hurt? If it's the arch area the skates may be too narrow for you. I suggest that you go to a professional tech that is recommended to you by your coach or skating director and have them take a look.

@Aimée Ricca i had them fitted at a shop. I think its the top of my foot/ ankle area. It's a stinging kind of pain. Also the bone on the ball of my foot (below the big toe) hurts too. I want to try insoles for that.
Жыл бұрын
That sounds like shin splints - you may benefit from the Barefoot Bootie or bunga pads. Also, the fitter can make adjustments by punching out the area around the bone where you have pain. I'm not sure what you describe will be solved with an insole. Definitely, visit your tech - tell them what you are experiencing and let them help!
