Ask This Old House carpenter Nathan Gilbert travels to a Sears kit house in Richmond, Virginia to tighten an old, loose stair railing.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse
Time: 2-3 hours
Cost: $50
Skill Level: Moderate
Tools List for Tightening a Loose Newel Post:
Level [amzn.to/2GJ80Bc]
Drill driver [amzn.to/2RNofUq]
¾-inch Forstner bit [amzn.to/2RNobEa]
3/16-inch drill bit [amzn.to/2RIPsHM]
Japanese pull saw [amzn.to/2tkzD0w]
Framing square (optional) [amzn.to/36N2x6W]
Paint brush [amzn.to/38VgVeV]
Shopping List:
6-inch structural screws [amzn.to/37LJuLN]
2x4 scrap wood [amzn.to/2S6xZrD]
Shims [amzn.to/38YBoPU]
Painter’s tape [amzn.to/2UezvdO]
¾-inch wood dowel [amzn.to/2GHAVWq]
Wood glue [amzn.to/2ub5n8y]
Paint [amzn.to/2UcwYAT]
220 grit sandpaper [amzn.to/3aSW9ym]
Steps:
1. Start by identifying structural parts of the stair that could be used to attach additional fasteners from the railing to the stairs. The stringer is usually at least an inch thick on the edges of the stairs. Look for nail holes in the treads to help find it.
2. Plumb up the newel post by holding a level up to the side. Once it’s in the correct position, use a 2x4 or other piece of scrap wood against the wall and the post to hold it in that position. Place a few shims both on the wall and on the post in between the board to prevent it from scratching or damaging either surface.
3. Measure and mark the location for the screws, ensuring that they will hit the stringer when screwed in.
4. Drill into the post from the front using a Forstner bit a few inches in to act as a countersink to hide the head of the screw.
a. Nathan recommends measuring and marking the desired depth ahead of time with a little bit of painter’s tape on the drill so it’s easier to determine when to stop drilling.
5. Using the 3/16-inch drill bit, drill into the hole just created by the Forstner bit, through the post, and into the stringer. This will help prevent the screw from splitting the wood once it starts driving in.
a. Nathan recommends using a framing square against the post and the drill bit to ensure you’re drilling straight.
b. Like before, measuring and marking the depth on the drill bit with some painter’s tape can be really helpful here.
6. Drill the structural screws into the post.
7. Apply wood glue to the ¾-inch dowel and use it to plug up to the two holes left behind from the screws.
8. Cut the dowels so that they are flush with newel post using a Japanese pull saw.
9. Lightly sand the dowels until they’re smooth against the post.
10. Paint over the dowels so they blend in with the rest of the post.
Resources:
Everything Nathan used to tighten up the stair railing, including the drill, screws, hammer, bungs, and touch up paint, can all be found at home centers.

Nice fix, but what also could be added, is to separate the post just a 1/32nd and inject some wood glue with a glue needle, then put the screws in. We also inject Tight Bond glue or epoxy into each baluster, top and bottom through a very small drilled hole that can basically be filled after with a drop of paint.

Richard Martin I had that one go out. It was originally just toenailed to the floor. I used a big step-bit to create an entry hole and a long bit like theirs for the pilot. But I had to drill downwards through the post, through the flooring layers, and into the floor joist below. I did the 3 free sides (baluster in the way on the 4th side). Each was a different angle. Lots of futzing to get the angle of each hole right. Because of the steep angle we used the step-bit, btw. Now for the rest of the story: The guy I had hired helping me was named Dave. His former boss (the team that insulated my attic) called him Dangerous Dave because he just made you so uneasy to be around. I always made sure to never irritate him. One day a few years later, I read about a guy killing his girlfriend and leaving her body laying in the kitchen. Her boy discovered her when he got home from elementary school. That was in Seattle. They picked up Dangerous Dave in the Woodburn area, south of Portland, a few days later. He had no remorse. She pissed him off.

Actually, this is terrible. These old stairs often arent even made with stringers. Even if they were, that triangle is long since old and dead, popped off like a nacho, causing all sorts of squeaks. If not before, definitely after the use of a lower newel post anchor...... But once that 3 hours of trying prove to do a LOT of durkin around more than those toenailed 12p nails.... you can just pull a couple stair tread or risers off and make some blocking and glue all the stairs around the entire base to be solid as heck!

@pavelow235

@@uhhhhNick according to an online inflation calculator 2900 is ~40,000 (2019 dollars).... and I think that was the price shipped to the home site, you still have to pay someone to put it together.lets say that is 5,000 in 1920 dollars. In addition in many current real estate markets the land itself is probably appraised at twice or even three times the value of the "house parts". Since the location is unknown, i would say this is the equivalent of somebody buying a current house for about $200,000. Which in many US markets the Sears houses still sell for under that price, Peoria, Little Rock, Tulsa. TL,DR The idea that housing was considerably cheaper during earlier generations is ludacrious.

I can see that "This Old House" is phasing out the old guys and phasing in the new guys. It's a new day and age. It saddens me to see that the original guys are fading off into the sunset. SMH ..

Should have put down painters tape over the dowel and use a sharp knife to cut in the gap around the dowel to mask a perfect paint mask. And done a better job of matching the paint to the existing paint. What they had was way off and it was very noticeable even in the wide shot. Two small circles of a slightly different color would have been less noticeable. Also that paint was not prepped properly. Should have primed the bare wood and (to the extent they were painting over existing enamel) used a deglosser or sanded the entire front of the block. And a lot of old trim paint is oil. If that was oil paint that mismatched paint they glopped on will peel right off.
