A how to video for soft pastel application on a model horses. Beginner and advanced friendly with tips that I use to add details and dept to the color. Techniques shown are for base color details, and do not represent the final finished work.
Model shown has been primed in white Krylon colormaster primer. For best results use primer that gives a matte finish with “tooth” or chalky feel. Spray on primers for plastic usually give a satin or gloss finish and not suitable for pastel application.
Tools needed: Chisel brushes, soft chisel blender, Faber- Castel soft pastels, Faber-Castel eraser pencil, soft pastel container, pencil top erasers. Not shown in video: soft pastel pencil Cote in black and white colors. Tester’s Dullcote for sealing work.
• Please note: I am showing brands that I prefer to use, and have not been paid or given free materials for my recommendations.
If you have questions, or want to request a different video, please post it in the comments section below. Thanks!

Thank you for this video! The sound is nice and this really helps me because I primarily paint my models in almost strictly soft pastel and dry pigments. I love how natural dapples look when done this way and this is going to help a lot with refining a few things with my technique.

We in the doll customisation scene tend to use erasers like yours and putty eraser so we can get fine hair detail in the eyebrows and lashes. This will be my first horse since my adolescence before which I practically drew, sculpted or painted horses every day as well as working with the real thing. That's about the only good point I have got going for me in that hair direction and equine musculoskeletal build are more familiar to me than human anatomy . I am just customising a 1:6 model horse so that it can fit realistically into photos. I am a bit of a horse perfectionist so I hope he will turn out the way I am envisioning him. I never owned a dappled horse so I am not sure yet if I can pull it off but otherwise, if I were to stick to colouration I know, I'm fairly sure I can do a decent job but in honesty, I think maybe I should step out of my comfort zone and just attempt dappled with some good reference pictures as you suggest. If it turns out and I actually put him on Instagram I will tag you.

Just remember you can't make a mistake that isn't correctable. So jump right in and I would love to see what you create!

Nice! I'm so glad I've found this video! Most tutorials use PanPastels, but they're so expensive and very hard to find in my country. I'm going to try these Faber-Castell soft pastels. Hope the end result looks as good as yours (doubt it, it's my first try at painting horses xD). Thanks!!

Thank you! I have always loved your dapple grey horses and always wanted one. I’ve always wanted to know how you did it, mainly because my mind is so curious as to _how_ it’s done. Thanks to your video, dappling is finally starting to make sense. This is one of the first videos where I didn’t fast forward. A whole online course would be something that I’d pay for! I’d love to see a video where you do a step by step process for using soft pastels. I know a little of the process, but it doesn’t seem to make sense. What’s step one after priming? Does spraying a fixatif after a layer of pastels erase any of the work that you did? Is a solid grey easier than a dapple grey? Love the way this mare looks. Would this be rose grey? I would’ve loved to see how you joined the colors/dapples of the left and right sides at the belly and back. Also, the part where there may have been a small “rock” of the black pastel sort of looked like two intertwined hearts. It was cute.

Hey Mikaela, thank you for the nice complements! Let me see if I can answer your questions, step one after priming is soft pastel application. Assuming you have already have the color planned and a photo to work from. Just go for it! You can always correct anything you do that you don't like. As for sealing, I use Testor's dullcote. Its important that you follow the directions on the can. I don't have issues of loosing any of the work that I have already applied if I use the Faber-Castell pastels and Testor's dullcote. Your right, the color on the model is a rose grey. Yeah, the rock presented a good thing to look for when applying pastels. I was happy that I made that mistake on camera, because it does happen. I had once thought of hiding words in the dapples (which you could do easily with a pastel pencil). You could end up telling a story. ;o)
