In this video series, we will show you the complete tooling of a floral leather tooling pattern. The goal of these videos is to show you my complete tooling process when stamping leather tooling patterns.
This video covers the following tools and the order that I use them in:
-Bevelers (small and medium checkered)
-Backgrounding (using Barry King #45 Bargrounders)

I am an ( 57 years Finnish guy ) amateur hobbyist and just started to make leather cuffs, phone case, wristwatch band, for me and my friends and family, ( those who wan´t them at least ). Also i make silver rings. I love working with leather. The smell of leather and all the steps from start to finish. I don´t own so many bevelers yet. What i wanted to say that these Don Gonzales videos are the best so far i have seen about leather work and beveling. His information how to use what beveler on what spot in leather, are so easy to understand. Thank you, Don Gonzales.

I did some leather tooling back in the late '70s but have decided it would be good for my brain to take it up again since I just turned 60. I have watched your video over and over while practicing tooling and I just keep learning something new every time I watch it. You are such an artist, thank you so much for taking the time and patience to share your craft. The difference between my first attempt and my 4th attempt show such a marked improvement. I think I have actually managed to impress my 20 year old son. Mom does still have some talents, haha. Thank you, thank you!

If I take away 1 lightbulb thing it was worth the time spent. I learned several new techniques. Best explanation I have found on walking the beveler, wow, what a difference in the way the tool works and outcome of the bevel. Thanks for passing along your knowledge of your craft.

Thanks so much for your time Don! What talent. When I learned leather working, I now see my teacher wasn’t skilled in tooling. I had my leather too wet and beat my tools to death... Thank you Don. The two videos have helped tremendously. I recently bought your two e-books. Currently I'm studying the Intro to Floral Design. Drawing out the vines has been a hair puller. Seeing how all the vines in the videos come together puts the book info into perspective.

One way to mitigate mold growth in between tooling while it's bagged is to put it in the fridge or a cool spot, though I am not sure if there are downfalls to doing this.

You sure are an excellent teacher. Loved this video. I was wondering what you marked the leather with, I can't tell if it's done with pencil or if it was impressed with a tool. I'm looking thru the comments to see if I can find the answer. Thanks again for a awesome video. One suggestion...when you're showing those little tool ends could you hold them still for 1 second so I can get a screen grab! 😜 Every time I'd freeze-frame your fanger would be back on it.

Check out his video called 'tool roll' he states most of the sizes. On Barry Kings website there is also a 'recommended' list for sheridan or floral tooling. Also if you buy King's tools, keep a note of the sizes you've bought, the tools I ordered came without number stamps, but i think they generally do come numbered. makes it a bit of a pain to order the next size up later

This might be a stupid question…but are you tooling with your weak hand and using the maul with your strong hand?

I'm a beginner and this is so helpful. I'm wondering ... are you right handed? I've had no problem using the pinky to stabilize drawings and detail painting with my dominant hand, so I'm wondering how I'll do with the non-dominant hand.

Again, tremendous. I suck at beveling but I don't think I am doing it much different than this. This video will definitely help but I'm wondering how much the quality of the leather, the thickness of the leather and the casing affect the outcome. The color on this tooling is awesome.

I am fairly new into tooling. I have used Tandy hides but recently used Hermann Oak and I couldn't believe the difference. Hermann Oak is tops.

when it comes to using the under cuts where do you draw the line as to the thickness of leather that is the do not under cut line ?

I use them all the time no matter thickness... just may not go as deep on thinner leather. U can tool on a piece of mat board material for thinner leathers and still get a lot of depth.

I’m really not sure... the only Barry king I currently have is the small one and it’s not numbered... the other two are craftool.

So so good!! What is the number on your “medium” craft tool beveler? I have a checkered one as well but the toe of mine is slightly rounded but not as extremely rounded as an undercut. It at times is a handy feature but at others it’s not ( like in a straight line, it works in this situation but just requires some “clean up”). I’ve considered fileing the toe flat but haven’t gotten frustrated enough to pull the trigger on it.

I would love to pick me up some 13 to 15 oz Hermann Oak. My problem is I can't just buy leather for tooling so I have to settle with my 5 ounce Hermann Oak or 8oz Tandy Leather on sale garbage

For the body of the chap I use 4/6 and for the yokes and panels I use 9-12 oz or so

Hey Don! I make a lot of light meter cases for the film industry in my spare time. I wetmold the shape of my case in a wood press I made. Now, if I want to do tooling like this, what is the best way to do it when my leather is in the shape of a case and not on a flat surface? My concern of doing it before wetmolding, is that it won't line up right in the press and or stretch out the tooling. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

I was taught to hold the maul in my dominant hand and the tool in my off-hand. Everyone I've watched or learned from does the same.

Got a question. I’m just getting into tooling and was wondering can I use a steel plate to tool on? I see everyone using granite or marble plate. But wanted to know if I can use steel? It’s what I have on hand.

Lonnie, I'm not sure about the steel plate for long term, but if it's the difference in practicing or not, where you're just starting, then use what you've got for sure and get to playing! If you have a local store or crew who sells/installs granite countertops, they usually can save you a scrap or even a sink cut-out. When I first started, I was able to get a piece of scrap stone from a local monument company that does headstones. They're a little thicker, but the guy I first learned from had done the same and then built the stone into the table so it wasn't so tall.

@@lonniedillon2379 I honestly don't know the answer to that, Lonnie Dillon. It was easy enough for me to get a good piece of stone, so never thought about using steel. I've heard people discuss whether or not they like the sound that different types of stone make, so not sure if steel would be noisier? Have you noticed much noise on the steel you're using?

@@lonniedillon2379 I have a 12" x12" x1" thick steel I use. Heavy as H3!!, I sanded one side down baby butt smooth then waxed it. Plus, I usually back my leather with packing tape while tooling. That is an added prevention for any rust that "might" occur. Although haven't seen any issues before of any rust problems..

If you store it in the refrigerator, you won't get any mold.

He is a pro who is willing to help anyone that is looking to learn and improve. Most pros don't or won't pass on their knowledge. He also has a day job, so doing a video, edit that video and dowload all the attached info take time. Like he explained earlier, the mold has to do with his available time to continue on with video series and is not his norm. Cut him some slack Miss Debbie Downer.

I am wondering if keeping the cased leather in a bag in the refrigerator would keep down the mold? I did this with some rawhide and it worked great.

@@jolson6346 Just to add, I've heard & used just a little Listerine Mouth wash in a spray bottle. That does help to keep the mold away. At least it did for me.
