How to topside paint your boat with the roll and tip method. Watch as I go through entire process of applying the topcoat paint. I used Total Boat Topside WetEdge in Classic Boston Whaler Blue. Most of this was rolled in but the most obvious spots like the Bow, Transom and sides I used the roll and tip method which gave great results. Boat painting can be challenging, but doable by most DIY how to folks.This boat restoration has been the most challenging so far. There has been a lot of fiberglass repair using epoxy resin, fairing compound, total boat primer and the list goes on.
Here's a list of Parts I used for this Phase of the restoration:
Totalboat Primer: amzn.to/32lPdEr
TotalBoat Topside Wetedge Polyurethane: amzn.to/2Nl1g0G
Pettit Performance Enhancer: amzn.to/2ChndY5
Red Tree Badger Brush: amzn.to/2ClaMuu
Brush Cleaner/Spinner: amzn.to/36CAZm1

Hi from Greece. I finally found and bay my 73 BW13 and I'm waiting for the spring to finish the paint work on it. Really appreciate all your videos and the way you proceed every individual part of the boat, materials, paints, etch. Procedure is the key of a technician, shows the way of thinking and finally a fine finish of the project. Thank you for all you shared with us. Keep enjoying our BWs….

Thank you. I will be working on a 20 outrage and painting the top desk. Going to be a boat load of work, but from what I see, well worth it. There is just to much crazing and cracks to make a gel coat worth it again. Thanks.

I used ultratuff coatings 10 years ago in my whaler and didn’t like it one bit. A few years ago I applied the wet edge topside paint and it chipped off. So I think this time I’m gonna take it to a line x dealer and have it done professionally , but I’ll spray the outside with Alexseal ... hope your boat comes out fantastic

Thanks for the info. A lot of folks swear by awlgrip. The two part poly's seem to be the best as far as paints but wont work well over single stage paints. Hopefully this will hold up well! Thanks again!

Extreme DIY AWLGRIP has been around for a long time it is one of the best companies to use, but I’ve seen a lot of people online saying that AlexSeal yacht coatings is the number one choice due to the fact it has a 30 year warranty on it and that warranty is good for you have a professional sprays it on or you do it yourself so I think I’m gonna stick with the Alexia and I’m hoping they can get me that Boston whaler blue on the inside of my whaler

Now you've got me rethinking the hull lol. I'll have too look into the Alexseal for the hull. Was going to go with Totalboat two part poly but I'll have to research the alexseal before I do anything. Thanks!

Extreme DIY to be honest , the time I used total boat was decent. It applied Nicely, but over the coarse of a year I noticed a lot of small spider cracks and. It attracted a lot of dirt and was near impossible to get off. I even have the boat under one of th use harbor freight car port things and still got nasty. Now I plan to restore the whole thing. Gonna spend Atleast 3-5 weeks doing it right. And I’m gonna order mahogany seats from specialtymarine.com. Finally get me a top quality cover and still store it in the carport thing
@ExtremeDIYGuy

I hear ya. I have kept the last few boats under one of those covers and It's amazong how much crap can still settle in the boat. You definitely need a cover, especially if you have trees on the property!

I think spray painting would leave the best finish! That is a skill all of it's own. I'm contemplating spraying the hull but will decide on that in the spring.

I'm trying to figure out what my boats already painted with (enamel or acrylic) put a sock soaked in paint thinner on a spot, and it didn't get soft or come off till about an hr later. Sort of chipped off didn't melt. Any ideas?
@ExtremeDIYGuy
@ExtremeDIYGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Hard to tell. If its a one part paint then you'll need to stick with one part primers and paints. If the old paint is a two part paint you can put anything on it. That's why I used one part paints and primers topside, Couldn't tell what I had as old paint and didn't want to sand it all off (which is another option).
@mwatkins2464
@mwatkins2464 3 жыл бұрын
If it came off it’s one part paint. 2 part paint doesn’t come off after tapping something with thinner on it and covering with plastic for an hour.

I'm late to the party. It looks great. How stinky is the Total Boat? I used Snow White Awlgrip on my 13' hull and it is scary stuff. I have $200 worth of it mixed to Whaler Blue and I'm procrastinating. I'm thinking maybe I'll use Total Boat. You have to cover every inch of your skin with Awlgrip and have an organic filter face mask. I still got a horrible headache from it and I don't get headaches.
@ExtremeDIYGuy
@ExtremeDIYGuy 3 жыл бұрын
The totalboat one part topside paint isn't very stinky but it also isn't as durable as the awlgrip which is a two part poly. I used Interlux perfection for the hull. It's very similiar to Awlgrip and had to use organic breathing protection. I wouldnt use anything else other than a two part poly for the hull.

I am getting ready to paint my boat inside and out. I noticed that you started with the respirator and then ended up not wearing it that much, so do you recommend a respirator if I am painting outside? Did it smell around your house afterwards or did the smell dissipate quickly? I have neighbors close by and was curious. Thanks! Nice job.
@ExtremeDIYGuy
@ExtremeDIYGuy 4 жыл бұрын
The totaledge did not seem to have a very strong odor. To be honest, I should have worn it throughout but hard to talk to the mike with it on. There was some lingering odor outside but not very strong. We have big enough lots here that neighbors wouldn't notice. If you're very close to each other they might though. SOme of the other paints like the two part epoxy barrier and the two part polyurethane have extremely strong and dangerous odors. I'll have a video out soon on that.

@ExtremeDIYGuy

Toxicity, you need positive pressure breathing protection. It's doable in a properly equipped shop, but not for the average DIYer. I've heard that the rolling method gives you a better finish but can't attest to that.
