Afrer extensive research, I'm going with Wetlander for my boat. I spoke directly with Scott from Wetlander for about 15 minutes on the phone. Super solid dude and answered all my questions. It's actually applied with a microfiber mini roller and that's it. He said not to tip this stuff. It lays out great with just a roller. It does take 7 days to fully cure though. And the boat would need to be flipped onto some horses to do the whole bottom. I'm going to do it once the fishing season is done here in the northeast. Probably mid-November. Gonna have to do it in a heated garage.

Thank you so much for your video! I am also a DIYer, brand new to boat refurbishing. I learned a ton from your honest and down to earth video! The fact that you included BOTH what worked and what failed makes your video so much MORE valuable to me than slick videos from professionals who have painted boats for 20+ years and show only perfect paint jobs with no mistakes ever. The overly slick videos are simply not realistic paint jobs for most people, and tend to make projects look easier & faster than they actually are. Your down-to-earth acknowledgement of what failed and inclusion of footage showing the problems you encountered gave me a much more realistic sense of what I’m getting into. Thank you for that! I am disappointed by a few of the negative comments some people have posted here. The whole point of DIY videos like this is to educate viewers by sharing both successes and failures. That way we viewers can see for ourselves what will work best for our projects and why. Hats off to you for your honesty and tenacity! Keep going!

My thoughts exactly, Sean! I'm staring at my primered boat hull (15' wooden sailboat), wondering what to do next. PU paint just scares me to death on variety of levels. I'm so happy to know that I am not the only one who had a bad first experience with it. These paint products (and epoxy products) are like little monsters who live inside metal cans. If not heavily controlled, they leap out and fuck up your project in a matter of minutes. It's hell on earth to repair the damage. I'm very happy to have KZfaq videos available and I thank God for them. But, at the end of the day, they can't possibly provide instruction to give perfect results for every situation. YT videos, at best, are the map, certainly not the territory. I loved this video because it confirms what we all know: there is no better teacher than trial and error. On the road to mastery, there is no escaping costly mistakes. Get over it, learn, and move on, as the gentleman in this video did.

Years ago I worked for a company painting very large boats where it's impossible to spray a 60 ft boat so we used this method....I used a foam brush to tip the paint and throwing away the brush every few minutes as the tip became distorted....I highly reccomend this method for boats....I was able to get paint jobs that I couldn't tell had not been sprayed....I reccomend a person practice on some scrap sheet metal or something as smooth as your boat...If you get this process right you'll be very pleased with your work as they are in this video....I found this type of paint held up better than any automotive paint I've ever used..,.I think people when they see a paint roller think of painting like they would when painting Thier house but that is a problem.....Thin to win is my saying ....This was a great video !!!! It show the common problems and that persistence pays off.....I assure you most of these paints are not cheap but we'll worth it....I spent years using it as well as doing all types of repairs to boats ..Great video ..,.I'm in the process of painting my Jon boat and I didn't want a spray can camo after the prep work I don't want to do this again in a few years......With my experience with this method I still watched your video to see what had changed with paint in the last 20 yrs....I can say that the paint I used was 200 a gallon and almost as thin as water once mixed ....A gallon would do several boats the size of this one.....I don't know why this paint appeared to be thick once mixed but I can say the thinner it is the less orange peel you'll deal with....Great job and Great video....People that show Thier mistakes help us all....When videos don't show that....to me they have little value .....Really good video you did a great job ...This paint takes practice and you got much better after a few attempts .....Thank you for showing people an awesome way to paint a boat.......No over spray is nice when your working on your boat in a dock close to other boats.

@kristopherfrootloops6714
@kristopherfrootloops6714 3 жыл бұрын
Gravity feed spray guns can be found for less than 50$. You can thin that poly base paint with mineral spirits and use magic hardner for a quicker dry and some sheen. Plus it'll be smooth. If it's spitting out bigger droplets thin a hair more and or adjust air pressure. Rattle can paint is thinned out way too much. Its lighter duty than Poly/ oil based paints when applied with a spray rig. I only roll it on when you want nice thick coats. That hardner definitely speeds up cure process.
@chrislangdell117
@chrislangdell117 4 жыл бұрын
Well definitely a what not to do when painting your boat. 😆 rolling and tipping is best done with two people. 1 guy rolling 1 guy tipping. Start at the port side transom and roll the paint moving towards the bow. The tipping man hopefully is right handed. If he is not then start at the bow on the port side. I use a foam brush to tip with. Dip the tip of the foam brush into paint then drag it over the edge of a red solo cup. Gets most of the paint off the brush but still leaves the brush damp to help with maintaining a wet edge ass your rolling and tipping. It blends the start and stop much better. Start with your right hand crossed over infront of your body very light pressure with the brush. One stroke across yourself as your right hand is almost fully extended lift off pressure gently as your finishing your brush stroke. Helps feather in the paint to what was already painted to your right. If you start to notice your foam brush is loading up to much paint because the guy ahead of you is applying it a little to thick. Drag both sides of the foam brush over the edge of a solo cup again. Heat is evil for rolling and tipping. Start your paint early in the morning 5 or 6 am what ever it takes to get the paint done in the cooler part of the morning. Anything over 80 degrees will be a nightmare for orange peel. Add a bit more brushing thinner 15% to 18%. You can knock down orange peel with 400 grit sand paper and apply another coat. I would recommend Alexseal yacht coating / paint as its great for both rolling and tipping as well as spraying. Just not an electric spray gun. It can also be wet sanded and then buffed just like gelcoat. However it is a little thinner. Give me a call sometime and I'll help ya shoot a video for this. 😆 Did alot of marine painting and Varnished bright work back in the day. Probably 100's of coats of paint and varnish. Learned from one of the best.

I tried using one of those and I was not a fan. With the can I was using, undercoating, the comfort spray grip would not fully push down the nozzle on the top. I am not sure if it was just with that product, or if it is like that with all rust-oleum products. I think the product is a great idea though. If you like it, great, I just wanted to share my experience with the product.

In the category of learning thru mistakes or failures I have found that the best rattle can paint jobs are those done with rustoleum professional, it comes in a silver can there aren't as many colors available in the professional type but you will get a glossy finish the drys hard and is durable. If you are doing the exterior of your hull and want a high gloss super durable finish follow up with 2k clear. It has a hardner in the can that has to be activated and mixeg before application.

- It will go a long way to avoid lap marks if you draw the brush tip from dry into wet. - Foam brushes (2-3” wide) are excellent for laying off the finish coat but not for application (too slow). Use a good quality bristle brush (3” wide) natural or polyester. The idea is to get the material on with proficiency then lay off (tipping) with the foam brush. You could also use a 3” roller (fine nap) and small tray for applying the material. - Two people work best at it. - Absolutely avoid days that will be too warm (air temperature above 75 F) Stay out of direct sun and the wind will flash it off faster then you can keep up. Try to do the work at the earliest time of the day. - And like you found out multiple thin coats will give finer results - A dust mask is a good idea when using the palm sander, even outdoors you will be surprised after 1 hour what you have been breathing in.

When you tip. Tip sideways then up and down... if you just tip sideways the paint lines are horizontal and can sag onto itself where if you last tip in up and down the paint will less likely run or will run down the tip line. Not on top of each other and over lap like tipping left to right.

Need to tip, lay off, into the previous section, whilst still wet. The trick is speedy application, laying off into the previous coatings. Looks like that's a dry brush? Badger hair softer isn't needed. A decent quality sash brush does just fine. Also, did you just cost the chrome or polished cleats etc? Guaranteed that will be where this coating begins to fail. That or the untreated rivets you installed as you were priming. Also, a bit of orange peel in the coating is preferably to extremely thin coatings.

Please know that the masking tape you use DOES matter, especially if you’re painting outside in the sun and the project will take more than one day. You want your tape to leave a sharp line, to pull off without breaking and to not leave residue. 3M blue 2090 is pretty good, but not in the sun for a week (at least in FL). The very expensive 3M silver 225 is good for several days, perhaps even a month, but test any tape before you use it for the number of days you expect it to be on. Tape deteriorates over time, though it has no “use by date”.

You boys really need to have a class for folks who want to learn these skills. I have a 14ft Duracraft I'd drag to a class. Just a thought.

If orange peel is the problem, it’s either a spray tip issue, pressure, or you haven’t added enough paint thinner to get the proper consistency out of your paint. Don’t ever use a Wagner sprayer. Get a compressor and a Graco cup gun designed for fine finishes with oil based paints.

Dude! You're tipping backwards! If you pull backwards into your wet edge you won't have to reroll your seams, and you'll be able to do bigger patches.

Kudos for posting your mistakes so others can learn. You need to maintain a wet edge and tip the other direction so you "tip" off the seam. Watch some videos by Andy at Boat Works Today....he does a great tutorial.

Definitely don’t like the idea of wet sanding with an electric hand sander ... best to do it by hand , I had orange peel and I took my time hand sanding it and it came out good
