Even though done this twice before, your advice is so informative and literally pointing out the exact pothole we know about :-) I do some things right :-) and there are some tweaks to make for this year. Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks for the advice. I followed it all, taking it as easy as possible and I still had plenty left to cruise over the Blea Tarn climb, push hard to the finish and feel pretty good afterwards. 😊

Thanks for your hard work making this excellent video, I know more effort goes into these things than you might imagine. I've been to the Lake District (including Hardknott Pass) many times over the years, but this will be the first time on a bike. I found your advice really informative and encouraging.

thanks for the great video with some honest extended description of the route...too much of what i've watched in preparation misses much of the cautionary aspects. TBH i saw 50 mins and thought i'd skip through but in the end watched it all. first timer on the fred but done the dragon and etape so hoping i can get in improved shape in the next few weeks and enjoy it.

splendid advice. especially on the safety aspects. would only add 2 things: 1. get proper gearing. most riders can't get up the steepest hills because they have daft 53/28 set-ups. go sub-compact. you should never, ever run out of gears. 2. wear mountain bike shoes. if you have a mechanical, or the hills are too steep, you will be walking. road shoes are for pros and people who train indoors.
@Mapdec
@Mapdec 2 жыл бұрын
Thank You. Yep I think I should do a follow up on gearing. It’s the most popular service job in our shop about this time of year. Good point on MTB shoes too, especially if you are expecting to walk the steep bits.

Great advice. I'm doing The Fred this year. To be honest I'm a little apprehensive as I rode the course alone in Febuary so I know what's coming. Be nice to do it with other people around.

This route is an incredible experience, we rode it twice over a weekend in 2017 in preparation for Ironman Wales, it seemed to work as I qualified for IM WC in Hawaii... that descent after hardknott pass is scary dangerous, on the Saturday the rain and conditions were horrific, some of those bumpy hairpin bends are white knuckle.... Guess what, I'm racing IM Wales again in September and I will do the same again, 8 weeks out I will ride it twice, hopefully with the same result come Wales.
@Mapdec
@Mapdec 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, and good luck in your IronMan. I guess you don’t get many descents like Hardknot on an IronMan course.

Thanks so much. Really great advice and super helpful. Wish I’d watched in 3 months ago 😬. Final notes on nutrition are helpful. I’m going to cut the gels until 2nd half. Think I eat them from 1st hour and maybe not best.

@mapdec I normally have a high 5 carb powder in my water bottles. Would you say this is a still ok from bottle 1 of the ride? I normally have this with bars and gels. For the Fred im going to prioritise solid foods for at least the first half.

Hello. Please make a comparison between wahoo tickr fit vs polar verity sense. This is what is missing from your channel. Why do you think Wahoo and Polar don't add SpO2 to their products? For many it is important.x-.-
@Mapdec
@Mapdec 2 жыл бұрын
Because all they offer is the ability to not wear on the chest. They don’t have any features I am interested in as a cycling coach. SpO2 really shouldn’t change much, if it does you have problems that require medical help. By the time that happens I doubt you will need a monitor to tell you that you need help. The arm band monitors have most application in gym sports really or when an athlete can’t wear a chest strap for whatever reason.

What would be the ideal bike for this ? What wheels ? Clearly DISC brakes are a must !!!! Bianchi Specialissima ? Mavic 40 SLR wheels ?
@Mapdec
@Mapdec 2 ай бұрын
It’s a good shout. Bit OTT. Weight is not as important as folk think. A 1:1 gear ratio, good tyres, a well prepped and safe bike. The hills are short but very steep.

@@Mapdec I am into the first 20 minutes of your video and cannot stop thinking here is a gap in the market for you since it is on your doorstep. To organise training for it at certain times of the year where people come from all over the country Saturday and do the ride on Sunday with you or someone from your organisation to see what it is that they are getting themselves into. I have done the UCI GranFondo Jordan in February and the psychological side is just as bad as the physical. You start off at the dead sea in 17 dry degrees and almost immediately climb to the most horrible windy rainy and cold (some said equivalent to -2) about 1800 meters in about 25-30 kilometers. Preparation is key
