Great video! I'm a Racing Victoria certified OTTB retrainer and it is the most rewarding thing ever giving these horses a second chance! We do a heap of desensitizing groundwork too, during the letting down period - blue tarps, beach balls, streamers, drums, umbrellas - the works. Love your videos, thanks so much for this one, the more people taking on these amazing horses the better to reduce race industry wastage. :) Awesome work guys!!

In answering some of your questions, both horses used in this video are OTTBs. They have been in training and are most of the time calm and easy to deal with. A month ago this was not the case. Even though I wasn't demonstrating with a super difficult horse, I would like to think its useful to see just how quiet you can get them with persistent and patient training.

If you can't afford the vet you can't afford the horse. Yes, everyone consider this when thinking getting a pet!
@ghettomedic188

Not everyone is a billionaire, so I think that's not an honest way of stating it. It's more accurate to say that if the one can't afford routine care, or more than a certain dollar amount (Which is personal- What's the horse worth to you?) for an emergency vet bill, then that person should wait to get a horse. It's more realistic that way, anyone can save money if they try hard enough. I say around $1000-$2000 nest-egg for a start. Before saying that "If you can't afford the vet, you can't afford the horse," a person should honestly think it through. After all,10's-100's of thousands of dollars can be eaten up really quickly on something unthinkable, like colic surgery, and not just anyone has that kind of money lying around. Your statement makes having a horse cost-prohibitive for most humans nowadays, when it's easily possible for most, if it's thought out properly. Peace, fellow horse-person.

Great video! I've never had a hard time retraining my OTTB's (working on one now!!) But I see SO many people take them right from the track into their new job and have a horrible time with the horse because they didn't let them down first. At my last minitrial, an owner had his OTTB off the track only 3 weeks and was already competing with him! The horse was barely in control!!!

It's a stud girth. The horse wear studs in their shoes for better grip when jumping, but they need to be protected in case they hit themselves on the chest.

Can you make a video on a horse that kicks out when you go to get on? I have an ottb and he's done it for years, apparently it's a racehorse thing and I was wondering how to stop it? He also walks forward when you try to mount but this is hard to correct as you need to get on quickly as he will move and kick. :)

hi, my name is sara. in january, i purchased and OTTB. his name is Peeta. Ever since the sale, his progress has been great, and hes a very well rounded, young horse, with a lot of potential. i have one problem, hes not very supple and cant pick up his left lead on the canter, and if he does, it is choppy and hes severely unbalanced. im just curious, is there any advice you could give me regarding having him pick up the lead? i am entered in the thoroughbred makeover competition in october, so being able to canter left lead is very important. both peeta and i thank you for your time!

a year and a half ago I got my OTTB, she came to us and i couldn't even pat her on the neck she was so frightened. Now I can lunge her and saddle her, she had to take a long pasture break to learn how to be a horse again. The first time I put her outside she freaked out, and could only be out there for 5 minuets. Now she outside 24/7, she still is earning what treats are though

It is always better to have an outside opinion rather than a vet that works for/with the owner/trainer. Vet's shouldn't lie but there are very creative ways to hide the truth so by using your own vet you have an unbiased opinion on the horse in question.

I love your videos! The fact they are calm and quiet is testament to your training and that your advice works, and that thoroughbreds don't have to be super hot headed! It would be good to mention about the high incidence of ulcers in racehorses, hence the grumpy/girthiness. My horse is not a TB but is on an ulcer friendly diet since having these symptoms - happy horse, not girthy anymore :-)

One thing to be warned about when you lunge your OTTB for the first time. They are not used to working to the right. They can sometimes freak out a little or refuse to go that way, this is because they are so used to tracking left around the track! But don't worry to much, if you are patient and don't freak out on them, they will settle quickly and learn the art of tracking right. :)
@wheredragonssleep
@wheredragonssleep 11 жыл бұрын
So some good basic information, but there are a few things not discussed. 1. Most OTTB's are not trained to tie, so it is a good thing to do ground work with them and teach them to give to pressure and learn to tie. 2. Most race horse trainers will not let you try the horse under saddle before you buy so you really need to know what you are doing. 3. Many race horse are not taught to lunge so you will have to teach them that as well.

We ride both ways at the track. The horses already know how to go both ways and change leads, I don't know who started this myth that they only take the left lead but it's silly.
@lauramillerick767

Aren't they trained to start on the left lead and then swap to the right at the top of the stretch? My mare has been off the track since January and it's still a awkward to get a good right lead canter. She's definitely "left-handed" for sure.
