I want to thank you for your videos. When I was younger and healthy, I loved traveling, but part of the fun was hunting for the best kit and getting it all put together. Now I’m bedridden in constant pain even though I’m just 50 y.o., but watching a kindred spirit preparing for a trip let’s me feel that same thrill vicariously through your videos which you clearly put a lot of work into. Thank you for being who you are.

Some people might think “if you want to travel light, then ditch the packing cubes , the soap, the tools” but as someone who worked in the field and carried a 10L backpack I can assure you that one day youll only have a chance to shower in the rain. And that if the hotel toilet doesnt work, a couple tools will save the day. So aim for a comfortable trip like Jon does

Jon Super Interesting I would swop put the Jeans, for some trekking trousers/cargo pants as a Thai veteran, jeans are super uncomfy, when hot and went Take care on those motorbikes, and roads as Thai roads are super dangerous and have seem many a Ferang (thai word for westerner) come a cropper

I'll be traveling by plane for the first in 8 years! I watched a fantastic video on security lines and prep. The instructor gave great advice on preparing for the security checkpoint and one detail I found immensely useful; put your pocket dump in the pockets of a travel jacket and then in the bin. This way, your gear isn't floating around the bin waiting for someone's hand to pilfer something. Thanks for these videos Jon, I've been a fan for about 2 years now, and your content is very well-vetted, researched, and presented. I appreciate your approach greatly.

I am impressed. You have assembled a VERY nice, practical, and astonishingly light-weight, compact, warm-weather, travel kit. It's hard to imagine being able to travel internationally anywhere, but especially in Asia, with such a minimal set, but you seem to have gathered everything of necessity. I would only add a cheap, disposable umbrella in situ.

Very well-thought out setup! I'd also add a small piece of laminated paper that you can slip maybe in a shoe that contains emergency contact phone numbers in the event that someone steals your kit. People will take phones and wallets etc but a piece of paper won't be of much value in the event that you need to contact friends/family back home

Great video, thanks for taking us through your process of why you chose what you did so thoroughly. I'm interested in hearing what responses you get about the Gerber Shard tool in your travel kit. I'd also like your thoughts on the camera you're taking. I was looking at that same type for a couple of trips I'm taking next year, and I'd love your thoughts on how it performed. It would be a bonus if you could mention how you think it would do as a KZfaq camera too. Have a great trip!

My first YT videos used the DJI Pocket 2 as the main camera - now I use it for b-roll when travelling light - I really like it - there are a couple of compromises when trying to manage bright conditions but overall you get a lot in such a small package and the case protects it well and provides quick access - in the next video all the Thailand clips are taken using the DJI - there is talk of a new one coming but hard to know if it's just a rumour.

Great video, once more. Flying without waiting for luggage that sometimes even gets lost is definitely an EDC goal. Well, I would suggest for anybody going on a trip for soap is the mini travel size Dr. Bronner‘s soap which is a liquid soap, but you can use it for pretty much anything. A tiny little bit goes a very long way. It’s smaller than a bar of soap and can be used for everything from washing clothes to brushing your teeth even.

I think the only suggestion I would prefer are compressed dry paper towels that expand when wet. I’d put a few in a small Mylar bag (like you taught us). I like the reusable microfiber towel for reusable experiences, but an emergency toilet situation isn’t one of them. 😝 I honestly would cheat a bit by wearing a multi pocket travel jacket. 😁

Hi Jon, I love your channel and this video. Can you compare this with the Matador Freerain28 Waterproof Packable Backpack? I have a specific problem. I am travelling to New Zealand and Shipping my motorbike out there ahead of me. Most of my luggage will be on the bike but I will need a backpack that can hold enough for 3-4 days while I wait for my bike to clear customs. It will need to be Hand luggage only, versatile enough for doing the tourist thing and pack away nicely once I have collected the bike.

I got tired washing my underwear every night after a long and exhausting day. Now I have switched to disposable briefs made of pure cotton and they cost next to nothing. They are also very lightweight and take minimal space in my luggage. For those who hate adding these to the landfill you may roll them up and bring them home for a proper wash.

Nice way of arranging everything, could learn many things. Just four recommendations: 1. You need to carry 1 tourniquet, a Rats is the one you want. Applicable to small limbs. There is even a Rats tail tourniquet (smaller). 2. The emergency kit should be in your slingbag. 3. There are smaller microfiber cloths, for your glasses. 4. You can purchase empty spray bottles (10ml). There you can pour etanol 70 w/w to use as sanitizer, or carry any important liquid you need in a small, secure and affordable way. I'll be checking the toothbrush, I am tired of carrying around mine with the wall charger as well.

What do you think about items from the Scottievest lineup? I have a lightweight travel vest that I can use in emergencies to stuff the pockets with my heavy gear if the airline gate gets picky. I also have a very lightweight drawstring backpack bag which, in a pinch I could put my laptop inside and wear underneath my jacket to remove my laptop weight from my carry on.

I remember, maybe ten years ago, there was a trend of multi pocket jackets designed especially for this use. Some had a "poacher's pocket". That is a large, zipped pocket at the small of the back which would hold a laptop. You might get two kilos of stuff packed this way.

What kind of Alpaca Pouch are you using in this video? Curious on the size for this kind of trip. Thanks!

Who did you fly with as this backpack is certainly too big for RyanAir cabin bag at 40x20x25? Would love a video with something like this.

Have you tried soap sheets and detergent sheets? Soap in the shape of a sheet of paper, hand soap and detergent? Just so you don't have to bring a bar of soap. Have a great trip.

Yes, actually I took some with me last minute, but laundry was easily available so didn’t use

Airlines weigh bags not you. Big pockets are your friend. I'm a photographer so I travel with high dollar, high quality, high weight gear, these things seem to go together. Before check-in I load my pockets with batteries and accessories, then transfer everything back to the bag at the gate

Hi! As a previous owner of the original SEG lineup, this is a welcome upgrade. Do you happen to know the internal dimensions of the bucket part? Thank you!

Excellent video Jon. Surprised you don't take a USB data blocker to stop possible data theft when charging through a wall USB charger. Cheap as chips and weigh next to nothing.

Good point although I rarely plug into unknown USB sockets - having said that I did on the plane!

Great video Jon! Lots of interesting products on your packing list. Was it easy to switch out the Able Carry Max with this SEG28, weight differences aside? After watching your video I'm on the fence which bag I should bring on my next multi-day travels: it's either going to be the Able Carry (from one of your earlier videos) or the SEG28.

Able carry is great and more structured/supportive - tougher I would say too - but SEG is very light and seems to have loads of room - I should try the load out in the Able Carry and see how it fits!

@@JonGadget Thanks, they both seem like great bags. Interested to learn how you find the front pockets on the SEG28, they look smartly done. And that's a good comparison indeed, fitting a similar load out in the max indeed.

I have had lots of problems dealing with Irontide. Bought two pairs of their shorts and one of the Pair was faulty. My car keys dropped straight through the pocket on day one due to bad stitching of the pocket seam. Gave them a chance to rectify via email. They said they would send a replacement short in 1-2 weeks back in September and not only am i still waiting but they are no longer replying to any emails. I can understand some supply issues but considering they were also sending me emails promoting the very shorts they said they couldn't get stock of I'm not impressed. These shorts cost way too much for quality issues such as these I will give an update this if anything changes.

The biggest issue I see with this bag is that it's a good day bag size, so if it was a normal backpack you could pull your packing cubes out and walk around town with it. But with packing cubes built in you would have to create kind of a mess to do that. So it seems like it would be better as a 35 to 45 L bag not necessarily a 28 L bag

You can do the same thing…it has a main taco clamshell, so you can take out packing cubes, leave it in your hotel, and use it like a regular daypack.

@@thisguy7175 sure, so I guess it's versatile but what's the point in having built in cubes if you don't use them?

I'm planning to make an extended tour of Europe next year that'll include camping and going to out-of-the-way places. That means taking along stuff that I can't carry on a plane. I hate the idea of paying large fees for what's likely to be no more than a couple of pounds of gear. I've thought of sending it Poste restante, but I'm not sure how to manage that. Any ideas?

Is there anything that you will be looking to pick up as soon as you arrive, even if you don't intend to carry it back again? A small multi-tool for example?
