This is a thorough review of the innovative Matador SEG 45 Litre backpack. Check it out to see how I have it packed up for a week long trip to Vancouver, BC. Also, a big shoutout to U.N. Luggage in Canada for getting this out to me so quickly so I could have it on the trip. You’d think for a company called unluggage that they’d sell something other than bags: unluggage.com

The problem comes once you put it on. I ordered 10 travel bags to try out and I liked this one by far the best when packing it. Was sure it was going to be the winner, just had to not be the most uncomfortable thing in history when I put it on. Unfortunately it was, in fact, the most uncomfortable thing in history. And this comparison was mostly against other backpack duffels, not even travel backpacks. Stuff like the osprey transporter, patagonia black hole, etc. The Seg45 was SO much more uncomfortable than any of them. The main issue is that it sits REALLY high. I'm 6ft tall and the bottom of the bag was more than a 3rd of the way up my back. The "hip belt" was half way between my nipples and my belly button. This not only feels weird on your back, it causes the bag to tip backwards and pull a lot harder on your shoulders. There is also one lone piece of stiff material in the whole bag, which covers half of the bottom. If the bag is not JAM PACKED (I had it pretty packed, my not quite zipper exploding packed) then this piece crumples. It also happens to sit exactly where the bottom of the bag touches your back, so you've got this hard crumpled thing digging into your back right where the most pressure is. Felt like someone was jamming a fist into my back and just holding it there. It was actually remarkable to me how uncomfortable it was. Even compared to other backpack duffels.

Great thorough review! I got this initially, but had to exchange it for the Seg28 instead. The segmented organization is clutch. However, unless you have the bag fully packed, it turns into a hot floppy mess. I think Matador intended this bag to be a duffle first and foremost. The Seg28, on the other hand, has a true harness and is one of the most comfortable carries even when minimally packed. BTW, that zipper pull cover you lost was the exact same one that came off for me the first time I tried to unzip the main compartment 😂

Oof, seems like some zipper pull QC needs to be worked out! Good info on the SEG 28, I’d love to take a closer look at that bag too as I think it could be a perfect bag for minimal travel and still have lots of functionality for every day carry. My only concern with using it as a travel and daily carry bag is that I’d have to remove everything from the segments at destination.

Hey I just saw this review and really enjoyed it. Have you tried using this backpack for long distance walking?
@This-Stylish-Life
@This-Stylish-Life 6 ай бұрын
I would say it’s not great for long distances. There really is no internal structure beyond what you pack and the shoulder straps aren’t super padded. If you keep the bag light then it’s not bad, but generally I’ve been using it in duffel mode more often than not. I think the Matador GlobeRider is a much better option for a 45L pack if you’re going to be carrying it for extended periods of time. Or another option if you like the segmented organization is the SEG28, which I haven’t tried but I understand it has a more robust harness. Hope that helps!

I could see a world where i put two slim packing cubes in the bottom and a accessories/shoes in the segmants.

Planning on carrying a few camera bodies- the segment part feels genius. Yet, with such weight- I worry the shoulder straps will cut through the shoulders. Wish there was a more padded (+more carry-on sized) alternative...
@This-Stylish-Life
@This-Stylish-Life 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, I think if you’re looking for carrying a heavier load then you’ll wish the shoulder straps were beefier. As one of the other commenters mentioned, the SEG28 is smaller, but has a better dedicated harness system with a similar segmented pocket setup. I haven’t had my hands on it, but it might do the trick. Otherwise for camera gear I would probably take a look at the Wandrd Prvke bags with a camera cube setup.

@@This-Stylish-Life 1. A 28 liters sounds too small, so I guess I'll have to forget the Segment method. The idea is amazing, but something is off (for my needs) 2. The Wandrd Prvke is a sweet backpack, yet, it feels like it fits more of a daily-usage (going out to shoot, having everything ready to shoot), compared to traveling from place to place (I plan my 3 bodies +lenses + Super8 to be packed with a body cap. Nothing ready to shoot, so all of that extra padding of the Wandrd bag is too much. There's no real space for gear other than the camera equipment. Still on the lookout. So many models out there in insane prices. Hope to find a more fitting carry on.

@@natleh you replaced the shoulder straps? Didn't know it was possible. At the end I went with Vanguard VEO Active 53 (45L). I loved the Matador compartments part but I don't know how it would act with heavy gear. Maybe more could be fit inside it but cameras, lenses, batteries would rattle all over the place.

@This Stylish Life Does this bag fit 16 inch macbook pro? how do you like the bag now as couple month follow up?
@This-Stylish-Life
@This-Stylish-Life 11 ай бұрын
Hey! So I checked with my 15.5” Dell work laptop and that fits fine in the compartment, but I did have to angle it in a bit as the zip wasn’t quite wide enough. Looking at the specs of the 16” Macbook Pro I would say it would fit. The Matador site also lists that the bag fits all 16” laptops. I’ve used the bag on a few more trips now and here’s a couple thoughts: 1. I really like the organization and for most trips I just leave the bag packed and use it like a chest of drawers. I also use the big clamshell compartment quite a bit for just stuffing dirty shoes or clothes away. 2. I’ve found myself using it more in duffel mode than backpack mode lately. The downside to that is that your laptop compartment now rests on the ground, so you have to be careful when you set it down, especially with the lack of padding. On recent road trips I’ve had a second laptop bag, so that’s been less of an issue. But, for true one bag international travel I think I would prefer a bag with a better laptop compartment and a better backpack harness.

Have a question has anyone have any problems with this using as a carryon in American Airlines or any carriers in the United States. Because I am traveling overseas for 3 weeks would appreciate the help thanks

I was able to travel with this as a carry-on on Delta and West Jet recently with no issues, but your mileage may vary. The bag is soft sided and flexible, so if you don’t have it completely packed out it does have some squish factor.

hi, does the bag have luggage pass through functionality?
@This-Stylish-Life
@This-Stylish-Life 2 ай бұрын
Hey, no luggage passthrough unfortunately. You could potentially rig up the backpack straps to act as one, but I feel like this still wouldn’t sit great on top of a roller bag. You’d be better off with a sub 35L imo.

Hey, I like good quality zippers. What are installed on SEG45 of the main zipper compartment?

They’re YKK PU Sealing zippers. The main compartment is bigger than individual compartments, I think it may be a #10.

Wow that's completely upgraded it from last year's model that's kind a bummer like I like the loop some stuff is better grips I'm going to say this or anybody is reading this matadors a Cool brand they're pretty good about being waterproof but I'm going to tell you something they do not use those y k or whatever type of zippers on these bags with collecting most expensive bags that used cheapest zippers you will ever find and literally like a sharp pencil or pen could Pierce these bags so while they're sturdy and rugged in a weird way and dependable they have these really peculiar flaws so they're beautiful but delicately dangerous
