Colon cancer is one of the most prevalent types of cancer in the United States. While traditionally a disease of older adults, we are sadly seeing an increase in colon cancer incidence and mortality in young people. Screening for colon polyps with regular colonoscopies is an important way to access your risk of developing colorectal cancer. But what are colon polyps, why do we develop them, and how can we prevent them from forming in the first place?
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to preventing and treating colon polyps. They dive into the importance of eating an anti-inflammatory diet and optimizing gut health to create a terrain in the body where cancer is less likely to grow.
Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing, she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the Functional Medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.

This is very interesting I’ve had crohns colitis for 30 years after a colonoscopy 3pre cancerous polyps were found but this was after a period of intense stress (We lost our income and home)I decided to completely change my diet removing dairy and found a way to heal the stress 1 year later the colonoscopy was repeated and they had disappeared with no treatment which proves diet and mental well-being are the keys I have remained healthy since 😊

@@user-bu9rf5kv1m I had 3 colonoscopies in the last 10 years and the 2 first ones had polyps in my cecum. Biopsy showed they were benign. On my last one they could not find any. I suffer from anxiety and have diarrhea when highly stressed. Since i no longer eat dairy i feel a lot better. I eat a cup of bean ( any beans as i love them ) everyday. My stomach or i should say my intestines are so much more quiet. I dont have these urgencies anymore.

Does anyone still doubt natural herbs? I have seen the great importance of natural herbs and the wonderful work they have done in people's lives. I wonder why people still spend their money on surgeries, injections, and medications every time they get sick. Natural herbs can cure all kinds of diseases, including, prostatitis, herpes, diabetics, asthma, cancer, hepatitis, etc. I have seen it with my own eyes. I was cured of lung cancer,And my sister and her husband was also cured of irritable bowel syndrome by Dr,Ayes who uses natural herbs to cure different types of illnesses. Even Ayes proved to the whole world that natural herbs can cure all diseases and he healed countless people using natural herbs. I know it's hard to believe, but I am a living testimony. There is nothing wrong with trying herbs. Contact him via (drayesherbalmedicine@gmail.com) or WhatsApp +2349028032485.Come and thank me later

Same here, age 62, I am reluctant to have colonoscopy, but accepted as preparation for abdominal surgery. One Polyp was found and gotten rid of. As being on a WholePlants diet for a year and before mostly vegan, exercising regularly, I was quite disappointed with the polyp, but relieved, I was in good hands in this Hospital (Havelhöhe, Berlin, Germany)

I really soaked up this podcast in particular with alot of interest as had so much relevance and information pertaining to me personally. My mother died at age 48 from metastatic bowel cancer one month after being diagnosed leaving us four teenage kids to continue our lives without her. So much she has missed and so much we have missed of her 😢 If only more knowledge & bowel screening was more available back then maybe things might have been a lot different. We could never understand why our fit,healthy-living, trim, happy, young mother got such an awful disease and died so soon! I’ve just turned 60 years of age (and so blessed for every extra year I have had longer than what my mother got) and have been having colonoscopies every five years since I was 40. This time for the first time a polyp was found of a pre-cancerous nature.. Being very aware of the increased genetic risk I have, I am so grateful to have this very valuable information you amazing Drs put out to the world. Thankyou so much for this fantastic educational platform. What wonderful😊 intelligent humans you both are making such a difference to help make our health our wealth 🙏 🙏

You won’t find these doctors on your insurance. I am a physician of 50 years experience and 10 years ago. The insurance industry called me up and told me I was forbidden to help people, my job was to give them drugs. You will only find good quality physicians when you step outside your insurance. Your insurance pays for the CEO and all the employees and the videos on TV and advertisements everywhere but they don’t help you. There are a few things like colonoscopy they will pay for, but they won’t educate you. They’ll tell you there’s nothing you can do for the polyps. My gastroenterologist even told me I was not gluten intolerant, but I know I am. When I started eliminating all processed foods, I’m down to only a couple of polyps. When I was eating processed food, I had seven precancerous polyps each time. At least I’m a physician doing integrated medicine and I know what to do. Good luck.❤

My last colonoscopy 5 years ago showed pre-cancerous polyps. Unfortunately, I can't have another colonoscopy because of Afib and can't go off my anticoagulants for more than a day. My father had colon cancer at the same age I am now, 73. Thankfully, it was treatable. He lived two more years and died of a heart attack. I feel so stuck right now.

I had a weird feeling in my abdomen, the only way to describe it was like a mild electrical impulse, I went to 3 different gastroenterologists, and since I'd had a colonoscopy about a year before (with polyps) they prescribed more flax and fiber. Finally a 4th doctor decided to do another colonoscopy and he found 2 villous ademomas, which were large and could have been serious with more time. He also said the flax seeds were causing spasms and to stop eating them. The electrical feeling was completely gone and I am sure this doctor saved my life. Get your colonoscopy and find a doctor who will listen to you.

The thing about cancer is there are hundreds of types of cancer that can kill a person. It is impossible to screen for every one of them before it is too late. If one of the body's 10 trillion cells goes wacky somewhere in the body, and they find it and cut it out, that's good. But the same behaviors and conditions that caused that DNA damage is likely happening in many other cells. The best things we can do to prevent cancer are eat an anticancer diet, don't smoke, don't drink heavily, do moderate exercise, and be careful of the environments that we live and work in.

What keeps being passed by here is peoples fear of the colonoscopy. I’m an RN, and will not have one. A dear family friend died as a result of a perforated colonoscopy. She was sent home, re-admitted in severe sepsis and died months later. I personally cared for several patients who had perforations, it was the elephant under the rug...no one wanted to say a doctor had poked a hole and then sent the person home. Also severe discomfort during the process, removal of polyps, general mistreatment and unpleasantness.

After helping some patients with intense complex wound cares, IVs, colostomies, etc., I still fear a colonoscopy. I did the stool one first and came positive. So I had no choice but to put on my big girl pants and get one. I am glad I did and was on time. I think that after three in less than 8 months, I became used to it. It still makes me nervous though. Get the best gastro you can get and get one for peace of mind. I am glad my first dr decided he was not up to the task and send me to a very good one that took care of my large polyps.

I have not eaten red meat for 45 years. I have also adopted a very fiber dense diet for decades as well. I am 70 and I just had a colonoscopy. A precancerous polyp was found, removed, and biopsied. So I think claiming that the diet can reduce your risk of colon cancer is a bit fallacious.

@@yormosi-6251 okay... I get your point... the important message is not so much what button got pushed to make that one polyp go rogue... kind of moot..and that one polyp... if I had been squimish or even lazy about getting a colonoscopy... then I would have ended up with colon cancer and an early death... why did that one go rogue?? Who knows!! Or maybe I might have had multiples from eating to much red meat... or from drinking too much alcohol... or from smoking cigarettes for decades.... I am just glad I checked the colonoscopy box... and am here to encourage others to do the same... if you are over 40, then put it at the top of your "to-do" list...

High fiber diet is great unless you're already very constipated. You have to get the gut motility taken care of - otherwise it increases constipation. And of course increasing it slowly. Adding in Magnesium is helpful. And not having methane gas - bloating.

My first try at a colonoscopy the dr gave me 75 mg.s of Demerol and anti nausea medicine and Valium. I screamed for the first 5 minutes and was bleeding profusely. The nurse asked him to give me more pain medicine and he declined. He stopped and left me with his handprints all over my thighs. By the time I had another one, I was given propofol, I had 6 bad polyps removed. It’s been ten years and I have to do another one in 2 weeks and fortunately this dr will also use propofol. Please make sure your dr puts you to sleep for this. I handle pain better than most but that was torture that no one should endure.

I recently had my third colonoscopy. I had three small polyps . Two were benign, one had the potential of possibly becoming cancer in time. Of course, they removed all three. I am to return in three years. DO NOT BE AFRAID OF HAVING A COLONOSCOPY. It is no big deal. Seriously, I have had way more uncomfortable nail appointments.

How common perforation is, is probably either hard to discover or know for a fact. I have had 2. The last one, I was given a fact sheet advising the risk of perforation was low I had polyps that were detected and removed early, when they were small. If the polyps were allowed to remain, they would have grown and the operation to remove them would have been a very bad operation indeed The risk of colon cancer and polyps is worth weighing against the small risk of the procedure to check if there are problems, is my view

I was diagnosed Jan 2020 with stage IV colon cancer (after a routine colonoscopy at age 52). This was my second one (first at 38). I had no signs or symptoms. I have always been very active with an ideal BMI. I didn't smoke, and drank in moderation (low end). But I was addicted to sugar, and processed foods (removed most though during my 40's). Two years prior to the diagnosis, I had switched to vegan/whole food/plant based (almost no processed) food diet. I however, repressed my emotions and dealt with stress. I also dealt with long term effects of having mono (Epstein Barr) and herpes virus in my body (stress metre).

I put off my colonoscopy until I was in my early 70s because my father had a bad experience during his. I finally had it done and found out I had stage 3 colon cancer. They removed 10 inches of the colon and 26 lymph nodes, 5 of those were cancerous as well. Chemo after that. All I can say is don’t put it off and take that chance, the recovery was not pleasant.

Alot of nuance with the meat discussion, it also depends on what is PUT ON that meat. Nobody really eats meat by itself, there are usually other stuff that goes on it like ketchup, mayo etc. How do those things influence the study? I think it's interesting.

@@siddiquiuzma6740 I dont recommend Hyman stuff, I think he has lost his way. Watch Dr Ken Berry. The polyps are primarily from seed oils, grains, legumes and carbs. Go on a strict meat and fat diet (which is healthiest for everyone) and your polyps will clear (and so will most IBS and inflammation and other health and skin issues). Vegetable bother peoples bowels MUCH more then we know. I lost 60 pounds, got off 4 prescriptions cleared my skin, joint pain and brain fog. much more energy.

My nneighbour was diagnosed with bowel issues that were partially caused by polyps. Her specialist told her that he could not do anything more for her because she had too many for him to remove. He said if she had certain symptoms, she must go to the hospital and be expected to have an ileostomy... She was terrified of that. After doing a search on youtube and found a similar problem and they were able to get rid of the condition. We made up a concoction and it's been over 6 years and she has had no problem... After returning to her Gastroenterologist based on her insurance company's requirements, the doctor was astonished asking her what happened... After taking the concoction four times, she passed about one pound of small things looking like rice grains... Again, no. problem since

Needless to say I'm very relieved I went for the initial colonoscopy and they discovered it.
