My favorite part of these types of videos is how they bring out all the know-it-all, ultimate construction, tough guys saying how everything this guy did was wrong. The very guys that made me leave the trades. Nothing wrong at all with how this guy trimmed the door. If it looks good at the end, you did it right. Period.

Kudos to you for putting the header up first. I've had arguments with carpenters who insist on putting the legs on first. This causes a "trap" situation where both header miters have to fit the legs perfect or you end up short after making your adjustments. With the header on first you can adjust the miter on the leg if you need to and most of the time a small space at the floor is going to be of no consequence, or possibly being cut even shorter by the flooring installer.

Nice video! Good job keeping it simple. Sometimes with a corner that is fighting me to get tight miters, I'll barely lift the front edge of the casing as I make the cut on the saw. This provides a very subtle back bevel to your cut, and is sometimes just enough to allow your joint to be tighter. For DIY first timers, make sample corners out of scrap pieces first before you go cutting your final pieces. Not every corner is a true 90 so making samples and recording the angles on the backs will allow you to make the correct cut the first time on your good pieces. Also, cut 1/16 or more away from your pencil line if this is your first time doing this. Bring the piece up to the door and check for accuracy, you'd be amazed at how short you may come up by simply trusting your line the first time. It happens, and at least if you're too long, you can go back to the saw and nibble away a bit more until it's correct. Moldings aren't cheap, so do it right the first time. And the obvious, if you're planning on painting this, buy pre-primed paint grade molding, not the unfinished stuff. You'll save a lot of money.

You have saved me a ton of future mistakes by teaching me how to use a test piece to check my miter before cutting the side trim! It’s such a simple hack that I’m embarrassed I didn’t think of it myself. Great instructional video that is easy to understand and follow with great details and tips regarding how to find the short points of the top trim, to dip the blade and move the board until you get to your mark before making a full cut, to keep your nails and inch away from the outside corners to prevent splitting, and to wipe away the glue before it dries. A+
