San Diego Flight Instructor Garry Wing, of Fly The Wing Flight Training, demonstrates the use of elevator trim in a single-engine Cessna Skylane. Most pilots never learn to trim an airplane properly until they begin working on their Instrument rating --- because that's when precise attitude and heading control are critical.
The key is to get the attitude of the airplane where you want it BEFORE you begin to trim. Remember trim is designed to relieve control pressure, and that's true of Elevator, Rudder and Aileron trim. You don't want to fly with trim; you only dial it in after you have the attitude of the airplane set. Think of it as cruise control in your car. Proper use of trim allows you to fly with a light touch and to really feel what the airplane is doing. It allows you to look away to tune a radio, look for traffic or scan your instruments --- and the airplane will continue flying as you had it trimmed!

Back in my flying club days, I once flew with a fellow pilot who didn't like my fingertip flying technique at all. He kept saying you have to really grasp the yoke like it could turn and bite you. He was really, really annoyed by my fingertip flying. And I was really, really sorry for his lack of flying finesse. Three decades on, I still do feel sorry for him.

I remember Trim was a confusing subject for me. I would constantly use excess trim and my flying was difficult because of this. Thank goodness I spent a lot of time in the SIM correcting this...... THIS IS AN AWESOME video and it made the subject of trimming so easy. Keep up the good work..

"GI JOE, KUNG FU GRIP"... that still shot was priceless. I started private somewhat older than some other students, I was 30. and I don't know about the younger guys but I definitely think I hurt my back and shoulder from so many hours flying without proper trim and fighting the yoke. Note to self everyone, learn to properly trim your plane or you will find yourself with painful back, shoulder and chest cramps. especially on your left side.

What I remember from my training in the 1980's about trim is how it would make the yoke feel light and effortless to move if the plane was trimmed correctly for whatever phase of flight you were in at the time.

Good show. In the 1970s I was a mechanic, working for an airline that operated Boeing 737-200 aircraft. I was in the cockpit jump seat one day and watching as the first officer flew his leg of the flight. Once we were in cruise, he told me that the slip-and-skid ball at the base of his ADI, or FDI as it was known then, seemed a little off. He then produced a small screwdriver from his flight bag and removed the cover over the tube containing the ball. Next, he began making tiny adjustments to all three aircraft trim controls while monitoring airspeed and engine fuel flow. When he was satisfied that he had established best trim with minimum fuel flow, he loosened the clamp which held the glass tube containing the ball in place and adjusted it until the ball was perfectly centered. After watching it for a time, he tightened the screw, replaced the cover and turned around and grinned at me. And that was the way it was done in the days of steam gauges.

I flew an Aztec with my father once he being an ex airforce airline pilot . He had me fly the air craft and he kept telling about trimming the aircraft and I was not sure what he meant but now I understand . I was concentrating so much on keeping the aircraft straight and level or I thought straight and level . Now I know why he was talking about trimming . It obviously makes things so much easier . I enjoyed .t flight with him until it started to get turbulent then I let the professional take over . He was a really good pilot he knew what he was doing one of the best days of my life ,a special memory .

Great, simple explanation! So, basically it's like balancing the plane.
@GarryWing
@GarryWing 5 жыл бұрын
"Relieving control pressure" is a phrase I like better; but yes, it is somewhat balancing the airplane for a steady-state condition; straight/level, or climbing, descending, turning, etc.

I'm a presolo student, very close to soloing. At first I struggled with managing altitude, then airspeed, and once I finally started to get that I struggled (and am still struggling) with timing the roundout and flare. I read on an AOPA site that you could "somewhat mechanically" use the trim to manage airspeed. Basically it said grasping the trim at the top, then taking it through a full motion to the bottom, you'll lose about 10kts in a C172. Although it's not using trim as described in this video (finding the right attitude, and then removing control pressure), I've found this little technique to be very helpful in managing airspeed while in pattern. I basically glance briefly at my airspeed near each turn, and if I'm at least 10kts too fast or too slow, I reach down and adjust trim. When I was trying to manage it with control pressure, my mind would get boggled with all the other stuff going on while in pattern, and I'd eventually lose focus on the control pressure, and I'd either be too low or too fast. Trim seems to help since I can set it, and not think about it until the next power or configuration change.
@GarryWing
@GarryWing 10 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. I'd have to think about that and try it in the airplane... what's going on with the yoke control pressures when you use trim in this way? I guess if it works for you and your instructor approves, then OK... but it's a bit like changing heading by slipping or skidding the airplane with rudder... yes, you could do that, but it's not generally how rudder is used.
@Calphool222
@Calphool222 10 жыл бұрын
Garry Wing Of course it's reducing yoke pressure. :-) So if I could get my mind around your procedure, and do it quickly (I think my mind works slower than other people or something -- I think through everything), then your procedure would achieve the exact same result. It's just that I'm going maybe 100kts, rapidly reaching the abeam point on the end of our runway, I've got a checklist to execute, and I've got to maintain altitude and get my airspeed reduced to 85kts. It feels a little overwhelming. By using trim in this way (after I'm stable turning from crosswind to downwind), it bleeds off enough of the airspeed that I'm usually pretty close to 85kts by the time I get to the abeam point, and if I'm managing my power right, I'm fairly close to my pattern altitude the whole way. Managing trim "the right way" is probably another one of those things that I'll have to practice more before it feels natural. I do use the right procedure when I'm out cruising around and have time to think it through.

question: is it a good and common practice to trim using the G-Meter? Technically, when you are perfectly trimmed, your G-Meter should indicate 0 (or rather 1 I guess). So to quickly trim without having to try and guestimate that you are not pitching up or down, can you just operate the trim to put back the g-meter at 1 and poof, perfectly trimmed? I know not all airplanes have a G-Meter, but I've been front seat passenger in quite a few planes, and most had one.

I liked the video. I haven't really started to use so much trim in my real lessons, I only use some so I don't have to battle the yoke like a hero, but I don't feel confident in myself to be "flying by trim" yet. I don't really like to let go of the yoke at all, and usually grasp it like holding on for my life. And since my flight instructor is so damn relaxed he says nothing much about it. Now, the plane I fly doesn't have rudder or aileron trim, what do they correct for? Crosswind drag? Or does it have more to do with center of gravity issues?
