How to trim edges of a quilted quilt and get it ready for binding.

This is how I trim the edges of my quilts after quilting to get rid of the excess backing and batting and get ready to add the binding. As usual, there are many ways to accomplish a task. This is just the way I go about it. My quilts are for being used not to hang in shows.

Thanks Shelly! I really appreciate this video. I just got my quilt back from a quilt company that did the "quilting" part step, only to discover that I had to finish the raw edges. I watched another big name KZfaq site show how to attach the binding and I noticed that she had the edge stitched down, like you do, but she didn't explain that step. This makes me feel so much more confident!

My quilter also sew the edges. I love it because it makes it easier to bind.

Thank you so much for this. My problem w a big project is how to arrange it when it's bigger than my table and cutting board, and wider & longer than my table and rulers and tape measures. I had no idea about squaring the corners & following the ruler up along the sides. Im on my way to do it now 😙☮❤🙋

I am confused when and how you squared and stitched the raw edges after quilting and before trimming. If you have a video explaining that I can't find it. It seems so helpful!

Nicki, I stabilize my quilts from the outside towards the center after layering by stitching 1/8 inch from the outside edge and then in the ditch between each border. Then I stitch a large grid between the rows of blocks. This stitching stays as a part of the quilting and makes sure none of the layers shift when doing my free-motion work. A walking foot is a great tools for this process.

I believe that I am using my DIY Style Magnetic cutting mat in this video. I do not always use that and there was no need for the magnets in this application. It must have just been in place while I filmed. I use a large regular self healing mat most of the time. When I am working with garments or anything that needs to be held well I use the magnetic cutting mats. I have two that I lay side by side to create a large cutting area.

This is a Hunters Star. I cut this one with an Accuquilt Go die. Here is a video showing how to piece it together. You can find rotary cutting patterns also. One of my favorite blocks. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jqmKa8eflbXSl5s.html

Do you sew the perimeter of the quilt before or after quilting the quilt?

I sew the perimeter down as soon as I have basted it before quilting. After quilting and trimming the edges, I also use the 2 foot and 3 stitch to hold the 3 layers together before binding.

Soo when you stitch before quilting do you just baste stitch? I'm sewing a toddler blanket on home sewing machine and looking to see if I'm doing things correctly.?! Thank you love your videos

I just use a regular stitch to sew around the edge at the beginning. You could lengthen it if you want. It will be under the binding and will not show. It works for me because I have done a good job of pinning the quilt and know the backing is smooth and will not pucker or move. Like I mention in the video, at that moment the quilt is perfectly square and I want to preserve that.

@@SewShelly thankyou but I do lengthen stitch but I always pull them out after quilting because some how edges seem a bit wonky. I'm a beginner so am very grateful for your help. Also I quilt on my sewing machine 😁
