Happy Friday Everyone. Does anyone else feel it's been a long week? I hope to be spending the weekend in my studio using these tips to make a couple of wide and narrow bindings. It's the last step in the marathon of making a quilt so sometimes it's hard to muster up the energy to change it up. When I do, I have always been impressed by the difference it makes....only once have I wondered why I made the effort. I hope you will give this method a test drive and add it to your design skills.

I have always trimmed batting to the edge of the quilt top too. This doesn't make much difference if you have a border on the edge, but it makes perfect sense as to not loose the points on your design blocks. Great ideas again Karen. Will change methods next quilt.

This is where I got a little lost and I'll probably need to watch the video a few more times. First, you square your top, then you sandwich it, quilt it and then with batting hanging over, square the batting to add the binding. Is that right??

This is a great series and video, but I’m not surprised! That green strippy quilt is really nice and I’d like to go back to your video about that and make it in a few years when I have time!!!’ My favorite binding is 2 1/4”. 2.5” is unnecessary in my opinion, but was great for my first few quilts. I always attach to the back and pull to the front. It always looks really nice. To avoid falling off the front binding while sewing, flange binding is SO easy and always gets compliments. I recommend MSQC or Jordan Fabrics’ tutorial on flange, but also recommend the tutorial Karen may have in the future. 😋

I started it a year ago and then finally this weekend finished stitching the back, front, and batting together and next weekend I am going to bind it and be done with it. I am so excited! It is a super choppy quilt, I hope the binding helps it even up a little bit lol but I had fun working on it and can’t wait till it’s done! Then I plan on doing a pillow case or two for fun, then starting a second quilt. My very first quilt is a bit larger than a queen and smaller than a king, small squares on the top ad then the back it’s much larger squares…. So technically, double sided!

Interesting video series! when I want a wide 'binding' I add a narrow final border using the same fabric as the binding fabric, quilt, then cut the binding to my usual width. Gives the same look, but is easier for me. Of course you have to decide that this is the look you are going for before you quilt. My current favorite binding is a faux flange. All done by machine, but looks nice and neat.

@@hazelem1266 HI. I almost always cut backing and batting even with the edge of the quilt. Some of my friends leave the batting a bit bigger, they say it makes the binding full, but I don't see much difference. As I mentioned, I almost always do a faux flange binding (do a you tube search). it's all done by machine. An easy method for attaching the ends can be found by doing a you tube search on 'Emerald Meadows quilt binding'. He demonstrates an easy, tool free method that I like.

@@nancys4874 thank you l will. I am hand sewing a large memory/story/photo quilt and my teachers are people like you and KZfaq. I have put on a 5” border on the backing with intention to self bind. I have big stitched hand quilted up to about half an inch on the borders of the front to allow for squaring up. I will today start squaring up. A few people on KZfaq have spoken about “empty bindings” so I’m a bit apprehensive about cutting either of the layers because I feel that one misstep will set me back. The quilt has to be finished this week because, after our strict lockdown in Melbourne we are finally allowed to travel internationally. Thank you so much for responding.
@nancys4874
@nancys4874 2 жыл бұрын
@@hazelem1266 Hi Hazel. No matter how you bind: separate applied strip or bringing the backing around to self bind, you need to be careful to make the fold snug against the batting as you wrap it around. Use your fingers to check that it is folded correctly and full as you stitch and correct the fold if you need. When self binding, depending on the size of quilt and the thickness of the batt, you may need to ease the binding in because the quilted center contracts a bit with the quilting. You can certainly leave a bit of extra batting when you square up if you are worried. If you do find a portion of the binding that is empty, you can always add a sliver of scrap batting to fill the gap! Sounds like a wonderful project! Good luck & bon voyage.

@@nancys4874 good morning Nancy. Finished the binding. Took me 4 days, actually 3 because I was so frustrated on day 2 so I took a shift at my hospital where I’m a theatre nurse. When I came back I looked at it with new eyes. Really learned a lot from your comments, especially the difference in the backing. My problem was that I somehow omitted to baste about 10 inches at the bottom and, because I took so long, nearly 6 weeks to quilt, there was a lot of shifting of the backing in that area. I struggled to coordinate back and front because the quilt is reversible with story blocks in front and photos at the back. My husband reminded me this was not a competition quilt and it was my first ever sewing project. However I trimmed as best I could, coming back again to your words and on the 4th day I made perfect mitered cor

Okay, I must be daft - but in the photo at 7.05 min. , is the quilt edge all batting? When I get my quilt back from the long arm, my quilt is cut along where the fabric ends and I don't have extra there to make a wider binding. Should I be asking her to leave extra around the sides so that I can square it up myself? Your videos are great and I love all of them. I also go back many times and re-watch them. Thanks, Karen. 7.

Great videos! I'm looking for the one on machine binding - is it ready yet? Hospitals in my area prefer machine binding on our Community Service quilts. I find when I straight stitch the binding from the front, it is stiff and when I SITD from the front to catch the back edge of the binding, it is difficult to make the back edge look even, so I'm looking for a better method. Thanks!

I've watched the video numerous times as am about to do a wide binding. I've very confused with the measurements of how far out to cut the quilt sandwich from the seam line. And how far out to put the sewing ledge. Karen shows a 1/4" seam.. then shows her ruler with another 1" out (so the twice the width of the final desired binding width). But she states it should be the width of the binding but I thought the example was of a 1/2" binding. Think i am just confused about terminology. When she says to butt the edge of the quilt sandwich to the sewing ledge the width of the binding, is it the final width, for twice the width to allow for the fold to the back maybe? And then plus the seam allowance. I think that is what it is. I think id better put aside for tonight and do a sample. Thanks Karen .. I'm very literal so probably overthinking :).

I never see enough explanation on how to figure out the placement of the binding along on the edge of the quilt. Is there a chart? 3 inch binding goes x amount in from the edge leaving x amount of the batting/backing there with a 1/4 seam. This is where I get confused and both of your videos and every video I find online skips over this bit.

If you feel the videos move along too quickly for you, you might try what I have done. I purchased a 5-subject notebook for my KZfaq notes: Sew, Embroider, Quilt, Serge, and Garden. (I use another one for home-related interests.) My settings button is at the bottom right of the screen (looks like a gear cog), so I make good use of the full-screen and speed options. That way I can go back or slow down as needed to make good notes. (I'm so geeky in my retirement that I plan to create quick-word indices on my laptop for each topic! Whatever works, right?) I hope this helps you. Don't give up!

Thanks Karen I made a 45deg mitre tool and used for the first time last night to join my binding strips which I normally join straight seams. Even the ends of the binding I joined mitred and all perfect first time. Easier than it looked and why I had been avoiding all these years.👍🇦🇺

I watched the first video, Binding the Basics but also found this a bit confusing at times. As a maths graduate, the numbers are not the problem..I think it’s the timing. A moment of processing time before dashing off to the next bit would be good. Your videos are always packed with great information and there’s the rub; moving on too fast means there is no time for the ‘aha’ moment to happen. I always enjoy your videos Karen and learn something too. Thank you 😊

I have enjoyed watching your video on backing a quilt because you are a great teacher who gets to the point quickly. Whats a reasonable charge to pay someone to back and bind a quilt please? Im in central NC. This video convinces me not to bind a quilt myself. I will hire it out. Please talk about those of us who are math challenged and or not capable of concentrating enough to learn how to bind a quilt. Just watching this video stresses me out and makes me feel stupid. Its not you, its me. I already applied a thin polyester batting by Mountain Mist. Surely I am not alone. Thank you so much for understanding.

I'm usually a huge fan of your videos but this binding series just seems over complicated. I was taught a totally different method (I believe it might be a technique that my teacher adapted from apparel making) to bind a quilt and never had any problems! Thin binding, thick binding, big quilts, small quilts, works for everything! I think I'll stick to the way I was taught, but thanks for showing me that there are other ways to do it!
