We have several hydrangea videos coming your way over the next several days! We are going to show you how to cut back your hydrangeas. First up is the Fire Light Hydrangea, my favorite large hydrangea, but ours is getting just a little too big so we are cutting it back hard this year.

Great video we can all use! I get excited when I see a new battery powered tool that makes garden maintenance easier! I'm 70 years old so that would make it so much easier than using the loppers or hand tools. Thanks Rod

I always trim mine all the way to the ground, and it comes back 5ft tall & full every year! It's truly a hardy shrub!..Also, like that hand held cutter! 👍

Great information - how tick of branch will that tool cut? Thanks for sharing your gardens and tips with us 🙂

We tried it on a branch that is 1" and it took 3 pulls to get through with no problem. More videos coming like this...

Awesome video! I usually prune panicle hydrangeas in early spring. Problem: the stems grow very long and then droop and arch so low when they bloom. What am I doing wrong?

This may happen here as well. The new growth isn't as strong in the first year so drooping is possible. I would recommend not trimming as often or maybe just trim a little bit each year if you have to.

@@gardencrossings thank you for your advice! I'll try less of a hard prune. One issue is that the panicle hydrangeas in question are most likely too big for the space available. My friend wants to control the size by cutting back. (I haven't found a hard prune a great size solution as you can't turn a Limelight into a little lime or Bobo.)

I enjoyed this video but I thought these should be cut back in spring. So it won’t hurt the growth at all? I have Limelight hydrangeas

They can be trimmed in fall or spring. They grow on new growth.

@@gardencrossings I have a lemony lace elderberry that hasn’t been doing as well as I thought they should. Second season for them. I just transplanted them to a full sun location. Should they ever be cut down a lot too or just let them go?

Amazon has them and also DeWalt makes one that is only 3 something pounds, which would be easier on my hands.

When did you cut back your Wine and Roses weigela? After it’s spring bloom?
@gardencrossings

Yes, Wine & Rose would get trimmed after its spring bloom.

Hydrangeas are pretty hard to kill. I’ve retranslated several times in one season, cut way down to ground & still lived.
