This video is about Fire Light Tidbit Hydrangeas and how to care for them: planting, fertilizing, pruning and growing requirements. Fire Light Tidbits are compact so they fit into gardens of any size! I’m planting 3 of them in my front yard garden for color and curb appeal: Summer into Fall flowers that change color plus gorgeous Fall foliage too! Also it was a super windy day: my camera tripod blew over - talk about live action video!

I live in a gated community, where many of the properties were filled in to raise the foundation of the house to be above street level. Some of it had been a pasture for cows for years. In raising the land, the fill was mostly of a clay nature, or worse. There is no way I can use the “native soil” to plant anything. When you take a shovel full of it out of the ground, the entire mass sticks to the shovel. If the turned over soil sits on the ground for 24 hours it hardens to the consistency of a rock. It can sometimes even be malodorous. So, when I plant in a new area, I must dig out a substantial size hole, get rid of the “native soil” and amend with a combination of planting soil, light and airy, a high humus soil, and a very good compost. I mix this all in my wheelbarrow, about a third of each, and that becomes the medium for the plants. I also put Bio Tone in the hole, and amend the top layer with a sprinkling of great compost. Have been doing this for twenty years, and have, in effect, taken out the top 12 to 15 inches of the existing soil in every bed. Plants could never develop an adequate root system in the existing “fill” on my property.

Hi Maureen! That’s exactly what we have done - and do - too. And maybe I need to expand on this topic in a future video. Improving the overall soil is a good thing indeed! 👍 But when gardeners only put soil amendments “into” a freshly dug hole that’s only large enough for one plant - without improving the garden soil around the plants and throughout the garden - that’s a problem. You’re 100% correct that working to improve the soil overall is best. I’m pinning your comment to the top to help other gardeners. Thanks so much! 😀🌸💛

Thanks so much Linda -- I'm glad to know you love them as well, as I am SO excited to see them bloom! I have a few flowers just beginning on them already, which surprised me as I wasn't sure if I'd see any flowers this first year in the ground. Do you enjoy the pretty Fall colors on the leaves too? (I'm assuming yes, but it will be wonderful to have that added Fall color in the garden!) 🌺🍃🍂

Hi Christine -- nice to meet a fellow gardener in my growing zone! We're finally getting rain here after over two weeks without any. And all of that wildfire smoke didn't help either -- I imagine you had some of that too?

@@GardenSanity still hoping we get a good rain today, a few 1 minute sprinkles a few days ago. We had the wild fire smoke bad last Wednesday. It was yellow-orange out and smelled like camping. I’m hoping it won’t affect my plants (veggie/herbs more so) too badly

Hi Laura! I felt for you when your camera went over in the wind! It's been a cold & windy Spring for a lot of us. Those hydrangeas look very pretty! I am hoping my hydrangeas that I bought last September, are just slow to come out because we really haven't had many sunny days this month. I looked this morning and did see green on each of them, albeit a very small amount. I hope you update us on yours, especially in the Fall, as I can't wait to see the Tidbits then!

Oh I was so heartsick when my camera stopped working, but I thought, ok - get the plants in the ground and then worry about what to do. Thank goodness the camera began working again. I think once we all get warmer temperatures and more sun, our hydrangeas will kick into high gear! Here’s to lots of flowers for each of us! 🌸😀

Hey, Laura! 👋🏻 As always, love seeing ur plant choices, and u always provide so much great info on everything! 🥰 Tyfs these hydrangeas in particular bc I have an afternoon shady spot (west Tx, zone 8a) in the backyard I’ve been thinking of planting with these exact plants. I’ve long said I have hydrangea envy every time I see urs lol! 😍🤣😍 My only hesitation in the past in planting these has been bc they’re considered toxic to dogs, and we have three. That being said, our dogs live inside, and I’ve been observing them closely around new plants that I’ve steadily been adding back there. I’ve seen that the dogs leave my plants alone so I’ve decided (esp after ur video) that I’m going to add two of these to that spot in my backyard. We don’t get much fall color here so anything that blooms in the summer and also gives fall color always catches my eye. Can’t wait to watch urs grow! ❤

Hi Lori! I hope you do plant some, and that you get both blooms and some Fall colors like you said. Let me know if you add them to your garden, as I’d love the feedback on how they grow for you in your climate. 👍 Also, will your shady spot get at least some partial sun? ⛅️ I can’t speak to dog safety, but it sounds like you are doing the right things. I’m very excited for these little hydrangeas, so here’s hoping they become another favorite! 🌸💚

@@GardenSanity My shady area in the backyard faces east and gets morning sun/afternoon shade so yea, they will get about 6 hours of morning sun before the sun moves over the house and they will be in shade then during the hottest part of the day.

I planted a tidbit last year. Love it! I also had bunny grasses in my front and side of house. Cute at first, then they got ratty over the years and I felt exactly like you--they did nothing for me-- so out they came!

That’s awesome that you get fall foliage color from your hydrangeas. I’m pleased to report that my butterfly bush is showing signs of life. My shy pink frost hellebore has leafed out, but the buds are still an inch off the ground and refuse to budge. And my poppy field has surprisingly germinated. (I’m not good with seeds)

You could get Fall color from these too! 👍 🍂 Hooray for your butterfly bush waking up, and maybe the pink frost too! You have a poppy field sown? That sounds incredible! I’m not savvy with seeds either, so now I need to know exactly what you sowed! 😀

Can you grow them in a large container only
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity Ай бұрын
Yes you can! Just make sure to give them more water than you would if planted in the garden, as pots dry out faster than ground soil does. Also, after a couple of years they would most likely need to be transplanted into larger containers so that their roots and the shrub itself can continue to grow and thrive. Enjoy them -- they are wonderful shrubs! 🌸

I'm so happy to hear they bounced back after that deer attack! The stems will get stronger each season, so it is possible that the stems are still young and not able to hold up the gorgeous flowerheads. When you prune them next Spring, only remove the flowerheads -- make your pruning cut just below them. There's no need to trim them any further than that, unless you see dead stems or crossing branches that are rubbing against each other (and rubbing the outer bark of the stems off in the process.) Next year, the stems will be stronger. (Also a bit of Holly-tone fertilizer in the Spring will help too!) I hope this helps!
