How to troubleshoot a pressure washer

Pressure washers are pretty easy to troubleshoot. This video explains quickly how to diagnose if your problem is the pump, the unloader or the wand. When you disconnect the hose from the pump, if you have water coming out of the pump hose outlet, then the issue is probably the unloader. If you have no water coming out of the pump, then your pump has issues and probably best left to a technician to diagnose. Thank you for helping me find the problem. I found the problem at the water hose’s quick connect. The inner piece of the quick connect broke off and restricted the water flow. When I used the pressure washer I would have on and off pressure until the pressure stopped. The water would flow fine under no pressure.

One thing that I have yet to hear anybody talk about (not just this video but all videos I've watched ) is what can you determine by taking off the wand hose from the unit, turn on the water supply and observe the water flow without even turning the engine on. Should the water be flowing through about as fast as you're supplying it? What can that tell if you do what I mentioned and the water flow coming out of the outlet value is coming out very limited. That's my situation.

What if you have no high pressure but have only low pressure , what would cause that?

Great "101" video! However... What would cause my pressure at the tip suddenly/abruptly begin "vibrating" or pulsating such that unless the wand is moved 'normally' across a dirty surface, it 'stripes' instead of a smooth cleaning? Mine is a ChoreMaster MiTM 208 Series. There are no kinks anywhere and the water inlet pressure is very good. Thanks

If you ask me, your pump needs some new seals, or maybe even a new pump entirely. But this is just a educated guess, and could not be the issue. Good luck.

i know this is an old post, but it could be dirt under a valve, or an air leak. Or as the other poster said seals, hope u sorted it...

I have that same honda 5.0 but for troy bilt....i connect the hose and it shoots out water and even more pressured water when i turn the machine on... But when i squeeze the trigger low pressure water comes out?? Does that mean the house or wand is bad??

Its sucking in air from somewhere, or have a crack. It cant build pressure to the hose, if the pressure escapes somewhere else. If you are not a mechanic, or a good diy dude, then you need the take the pump to get serviced. Hard to say what it is, but water is not coming out where it should, so something went wrong. Its 80% of the time because water in the pump freezes, or bad/no service.

what will make the engine surge when water is being used

Was wondering if you could help w any ideas. My craftsman pressure washer runs for a bit and then shuts down quick. If i choke it and pull it once and unchoke it and re-pull it, it then starts and runs for couple min then have to repeat procedure. Intially it runs good till after maybe a good 5min or more. The pump has been gone thru and unloader was rebuilt, carb has been ultrasonic cleaned and oil level is where it should be. The oil has not been changed. Pump pressure was set w a gauge. When it shuts off its a quick shutdown. I was thinking gas cap (looks in great condition tho)

The gas cap may be the problem. I remember a few years ago (at least) Honda having a problem with their gas caps not venting. I'd start by replacing it and see if that fixes the problem.

Why does my EXCEL PRESSUR washer stop running when I let off the trigger? And one more quick question is why is it super hard to crank the motor and is hard to pull the rope after I turned on my water sprocket to my EXCEL? It is a 2002 model.

Thanks for the question! I would say that the pressure washer's unloader is malfunctioning and is not "unloading" so that water will bypass the pump when the trigger is not pulled. You may want to have the unit inspected to see if it's clogged or if it needs replacing. Also, the thermal relief valve might be defective, which senses the temperature of the water through the system. If it's defective, the pump will stop operating. These are a couple items to check, but it may be worth it to have a technician diagnose it. You can also find some helpful trouble shooting tips by taking a look at any gas pressure washer manual. I would just search "Excel pressure washer manual" on Google to find a .pdf manual, which should have some good tips for you.

I have a pressure washer I just replace the pump on. I have to hold open the want trigger to start it. As soon as I let go of the handle the motor bogs down and dies. It works and has pressure as long as I keep the trigger in. Any thought as to why I can't release the trigger and it return to idle?

Thank you for watching! Most likely the problem is the unloader valve. I would either have it disassembled and cleaned or replaced by a technician. Most likely it's not "unloading" as it should upon start up.

@@MasterToolRepair my issue is kind of like this. Except, the water doesn't even go into the line to the wand. With water on and engine off the water flows fine. When I start the engine, the water flow stops immediately and the engine boggs down. Could this be the unloader valve ? I cant find anyone with this problem. Everyone just has low pressure. Not a no water flow issue.

@@whatyoumakeofit6635 If you're using hot water through the unit, it could be that the temperature is too high. If you're using cold water through the unit, then it could be a faulty thermal relief valve...this seems to be a common issue. Try adjusting the choke on the engine. Thats my problem. Water on it comes out of outlet a little. Start engine and it has pressure immediately for about a second. Then it stops quickly and boggs the engine down.

I got a unique problem.. water flows through pump when motor is off , just house pressure..fire up motor no water at all. Keep in mind the supply hose to the gun was not connected for both scenarios.

Mine will start if I hold the trigger on. If I don`t or if I release it after it starts it shuts off. What could that be?

Thanks for the question! I think you may have a faulty Unloader Valve, or it's clogged and needs to be cleaned. This part on the pump keeps pressure off of the pump by allowing water to run through the pump. The engine runs but when i start it and the pump builds pressure, the engine seises to a halt and only runs when I release pressure from the gun. Any ideas?

Thanks for the question! There are many reasons this could happen, but one is that the thermal relief valve is defective, the water temperature is too high (probably not the case but I'll mention it anyway) or the unloader valve is not calibrated properly. You can try cleaning the unloader valve, it may be clogged up. Also, make sure your engine RPM is high enough so that it's running at the correct RPM when the unit begins to pressurize the pump. If you're not able to disassemble and clean the unloader valve, I'd take it in to a repair shop.

@@MasterToolRepair It was the unloader valve! my model has a twist knob to change the pressure and it was set way too high, As soon as I backed it off it works great now. Thank you so much sir!!

Wasted 3 days trying to figure out why the water was coming out of the relief valve. After watching this video it took me about 15 minutes to figure out that hose was all clogged up.
