Good video, GREAT information. I've watched numerous videos on this subject and yours is the best that I've come across. Now to put this info to good use and check out my pump box and winding resistance readings more thoroughly before pulling it. Thank you.

good info. You should probably chlorine treat the open well. I use several tablets like used for a swimming pool. Maybe a neighbor with a pool or a big box store. flush the water on startup.

Very good idea to shock treat the well. I didn't do that, but I ran all taps for about 1 hour before using the water. Thanks for watching and commenting!

In an emergency situation it would be fine to use the known bad capacitor but DO NOT wait for it to fail before you change it…when it fails it could potentially burn out the pump while it’s trying to start with a failed capacitor

My parents are on well water. They had there system overhauled as it was in need of repair when they moved in back in 2012. Rust and open wiring was everywhere..

Having your own well has its benfits such as not having to pay a bill every month to the municipality but when things go wrong you're on your own. Having the skills to fix your own things is great but not everyone knows what to do. That's why I like to make videos that help people become self-sufficient. Well pump systems usually operate for years without any trouble. Still, it's nice to know what to do when things go wrong. I hope your parents have a functioning well system now. Thanks for checking it out!

The cap was leaking, it may test good now, but it's time to get a spare cap. There are two ways to see a bad cap, the tester as you showed, and the other is a leaking cap, and yours is leaking. Take note of the deposits around the edge, it's working now, but it won't work very soon. Capacitors are considered consumables, they don't last forever. Mine just quit, it shows a bubbled up disk, the little white spot between contacts, if it's flat, it's good, if it's bubbled up it's bad.

@@jamesfenton7338 In the video I explained that I would put the leaking cap back into service, to get our water back on, but was ordering some replacements. Sometimes, you have to make due with what you have on hand . That or have no water at all while a part is on order, and we live off the beaten path where there are no hardware stores. For that reason, I ordered 4 spares.

Thanks. Not an electrician but I've had electrical training and have had permits to do my own work. I wired my own house last year, every circuit, all new cables, wired the panel, everything. I'm glad this video helped!

My name is Roger I'm in Grantsburg Wisconsin I like your video of got the same issue right now Happy New Year's my well went out and I'm trying to test everything and figure it out oh now it's starting to snow here it's like just just great just perfect time whether you want to change. The capacitors in the covers and I've been trying them I'm not very good with electricity I'm not very good with testing things that are electric I don't like it it would bothers me but it would have been nice I wish you should have showed how to test the voltage on the control cover with the leads I'm not very good at that if you test test like I said I'm not good at electric I wish you would have showed how to test the voltage in the box as far as your line voltage coming in and I shut my breaker off and everything and I thought that I was going to have a good but it's not turning out that way so I don't know I guess I'll fly by the seat of my pants and see what I can figure out but

Be careful in there! If you have a multi-meter, set it on voltage and touch the leads across terminals in the control box. With the breaker OFF you should have zero voltage. If you are the least doubtful, wait until you can get some help with the repair. Good luck. Sometimes, a guy is better off waiting for assistance than trying it himself. Electricity is very unforgiving and shocks can be lethal. Bottled water for the night sounds like a good plan. Good luck!

Thank you. I don't know ow if I missed it in the video, but can you let me know what the model is for that control box?
@EverydayProjects
@EverydayProjects Жыл бұрын
I believe that the control box is a Franklin Electric brand. There are several manufacturers that make a nearly identical box. Any good hardware store will carry them (Home Depot, Lowes, etc)

Thank You for your detailed video on testing three way submersible well pumps and its capacitor , I was hoping you would have described on how you wired the inside of the control box where the capacitor is located between the pressure switch, well pump, and L1 L2, It looks easy, but I am missing something, I see 4 wires going to your box, can you please explain.. Thank You Again. ROBERT FROM NEW PALTZ NY.

Thanks for your question. What I'll do is make a short video tomorrow, showing the wiring inside the control panel, explaining where each goes. I'll reply in this thread with a link to the video so you won't have to search for it. Best Wishes!

Here is the video I made that explains the routing of the four cables through the well pump control box. Make certain the power is off before you do any electrical work! : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptSFeMujuOCZY30.html

If you are handy with a multi-meter, test for continuity in the wires to the pump motor. This pump of mine had an open in one of the wires. Always get an electrician if you are uncomfortable doing your own work. Good luck!

Does the capacitor orientation matter? My cap was bad ordered some more and now insee my relay is bsd as well ive heen diggin for a day or so and had found out how to test the relay but not exactly what has failed with it if there is a reading. Not sure if the failed cap caused the relay failure or possibly orientation of new cap. I bought a home and they have skipped out in properly do anything lol. Not sure it was working right to begin with but i could only find one relay that was the same and it wasnt cheap. I found tbis all out by a fried breaker i finally got a new one today. So i put it al back together and now my pressure switch is stuck open. So before i put that valuable relay in there im tryin to figure out why or if pressure switch has failed and if so did it fail because of cap or relay or could it technically run without them. I wasnt expecting the book to be throsn at me with my first well job lol. Thanks any knowledge would be greatly appreciated. I subbed you remind me alot of myself with the way you speak have a good one brother.

I can’t suggest what to do, but the pressure switch fail is most definitely not related, but probably just due to age. They are usually available at most hardware stores for about $50. Similarly, the whole control box for the well pump would be about $125 - $200 most places, except a well specialty store may charge more for one. Sometimes, when in doubt, just replace with new, if you can afford it. That way, at least, you will know the component is good. I wish you the best of luck with your repair. Thanks for subscribing. Sorry I can’t be of more assistance.

Thanks so much for the reply. I have all new components except the new relay its rare to find the lincoln one new. But i managed to do so for $60 and 2 new caps for $20. And pressure switch was $20. Most of the folks outnhere have wells so i guess the switches are a lil cheaper for us or maybe its a texas thing lol. I was curious as to how and why so i didnt put new switch and cap on and burn all new components up. The relay is still a few days away but i have a 6prong used relay from a similar qd box. And since u said they def wouldnt initiate a switch failure ik gonna shoot for water right now. I need a shower lol

My multimeter reader doesn’t have microfarads just farads can I test under the other measurements listed on the copacitor ? “ hertz, vac “
@EverydayProjects
@EverydayProjects Жыл бұрын
If it measures Farads you're good. Just interpret the reading you get taking into consideration that one microfarad = 1/1,000,000 of a farad

does it matter the order of the L1, L2 wires?
@EverydayProjects
@EverydayProjects 2 жыл бұрын
The L1 and L2 wires are interchangeable. Each is fed from one phase of the service panel. Residential service panels typically have three wires feeding it from the street. Two hot wires, each carrying 110 volts and a neutral (plus a ground wire). This allows the service panel to distribute to 110 volt circuits in the house (tapping into only one side or phase of the panel), and to distribute to 220 volt circuits, such as a kitchen range or well pump (by tapping into both sides or phases of the service panel) . A double pole breaker in the panel allows each phase of the service panel to energize one leg of the breaker at 110 volts each. Combined, they deliver 220 volts to the well pump. To answer your question more specifically, yes, the L1 and L2 are interchangeable. They both carry one leg of 110 volts each from the service panel to the motor control box. Be especially careful around electricity and if you have any doubts whatsoever, get a licenced electrician to do the work.

I watched the whole video to see HOW you check for continuity between terminals in control box and you don’t show it, you just SAY that you did it. That wasn’t helpful in my situation at all.
@EverydayProjects
@EverydayProjects Жыл бұрын
Sorry about that. Continuity tests are a standard test used on multimeters and I wrongly assumed that anyone with a meter would know how. To check for continuity, make certain the power is off. Then select the continuity setting on the meter then touch the bare end of the probes to each end of the item being tested. In this case, I checked between the terminal in the box and the wires leading down to the pump. Again. sorry I forgot to do that.
