Right on the money Adept Ape.. When drained my LB7's oil, a 5-gallon bucket got filled all the way to the top and it was very diluted. With fresh oil and a quart of Lucas oil additive the oil pressure meter went from almost 0 to about about 60. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Doing the dye can pinpoint it, but sometimes when you start getting one leaking, more are likely to leak soon. Normally we just change them as they fail though.

@Adept Ape: do you know which part in the injector fails which causes fuel to oil dilution? Also, do you know where the fuel leaks? Is it from the solenoid housing or something further inside? Been trying to find a solution for this C7/C9 problem.

I have to do this today on a toyota hilux, same symptom, i have a black light but not the dye, ill buy some this morning, Thx great vid :)........btw its a fleet car and the fleet company only gives me 0.8 in time to diagnose the issue, from this vid it shouldnt be an issue :)

I recently got my #6 injector replaced on my 3406e and after I picked up my truck from freightliner I found the oil is above the full mark on the dip stick,after watching your video I guess now I should get my oil sample checked out and get the oil and filters changed

Does this also apply to modern common rail diesel engines in cars? I have a 2010 GM 1.7 diesel, The fuel regulator located on the higher pressure pump died, I replaced it and the stalling issue was solved. But now im getting Oil dilution and im losing diesel faster than I should. Checking the oil via dipstick also shows a higher reading, so I suspect diesel is entering the engine and mixing with the oil. I've got a little coating of diesel around the top of the injectors as well! The only symptoms I have are... Blue smoke and loss of fuel and the smoke smells like burning oil. Turbo checked and is OK, no play in the propeller shaft, but a little oil in the turbo near it. Also removed the breather hose and started the car, also smoke coming out of that. Thoughts?

Really good idea thanks, but what if you have a modern common rail direct injection engine (car/light van in my case Vw group) and you just had an oil change (low mileage engine) and you do 50 miles or more how long will oil take to get browned (low emissions oil ) if it still is very colourless should I be worried?

I have a cat c12. Just recently had fuel in my oil problem. Used the advice from this video and dyed my fuel in the fuel filter. Still could not find the problem. Ended up changing the fuel pump and o rings on the injectors. Still didn't fix it. Brought it to a local shop they pressurized the fuel system and found a small Crack on #2 internal fuel housing right at the injector. I guess I was the 1 out of 100 that it was the head.

I have a question for you.. I have a 3406c peek Caterpillar serial# 4CK09953. Noticed I was losing oil pressure. Got down to 18 give or take at hot idle. Decided to shut her down. I found I was making oil. Been watching your vids and ran the dye. Had dye coming out #3 bonnet. Replaced all 6 fuel nozzels made sure screw was tight on new ones before install. But all back together dropped oil pan. Found fingernail chunks of metal. Inspected rod and mains #4 main was bad. Crank was not damaged. Cleaned it up. Installed new rod and mains and trush washer. Put back together . Everything seemed fine. Been running for 4 days Then oil pressure started dropping again.. checked oil. Making it again. What do I need to do next?. Would so appreciate your help and advice. Thank you.

+Anthony Koulizakis Well I mentioned a few of the other possible locations on a Cat engine. The high pressure fuel pump, fuel transfer pump, a severely damaged cylinder could leak it into the crankcase or a cracked cylinder head fuel rail, but usually it's the injectors or injector lines.

Good video, I'm having an issue with a Cummins CM870 right now smells like fuel in with the oil, I removed the valve cover it burned my eyes and nose from the smell. Also has a thump coming into the intake sounds like a steam train. Any ideas

ape, these videos are amazing. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. With the oil diluted, wouldn't more oil get into the cylinder causing the engine to smoke a slight blue while running? Just trying to think if there would be any tell tell signs of a problem other than the dipstick. I sometimes go 1,000-1500 miles without checking the dip stick.

I'm glad you like them, not sure if they're amazing, but I think I am getting better at making them. So if your oil is diluted you'll start getting less oil pressure because the viscosity will start dropping, that is a good way to tell. Thanks for commenting.

+Adept Ape you wont win an Oscar for them, but i meant the content is very helpful. There are a lot of guys with automotive youtube vlogs, but non that cover detailed diesel engines like yours. Hopefully you will be able to get into a diesel rebuild in the near future!

@adept ape I have diesel in the oil I did the Dye test twice to be sure no leaks up top can't see the Dye glow anywhere we replaced all the don't know if I got all the injectors down so I'm taking them back up making sure there is no debris keeping it from sinking down truck was broke down and snowy weather it's nicer out now I'm just wondering if there's another thing I can check to figure out if it's injectors or head please and thank you

i have a 1978 kubota tractor, v4000, i believe im getting fuel in the oil. any merit to changing the lift pump gasket(s) and injection pump gaskets? and in theory if i remove the injection pump , regasket it, and put it back and line up the marks, so long as i didnt turn the motor it is still timed correctly right

Hello everyone! I have Toyota Hiace with 2.5d4d engine 102ps KDFTV code and I have a problem with oil and fuel dilution. We changed small rings under the injectors, fuel hoses, the injectors are fine - tested, does fuel pump may cause this problem? If you drive a van on 2000rmps constantly it will be a minimum of the oil and fuel dilution, but if you push the engine over 3000rmps lets say in 5th gear and 120kmh ( 75mph ) the dilution will start quickly. So I put dye in my C12 Cat 04 model and ran it for 30 min no clear indication on injectors but if I shine the black light on the oil that’s all over the moving components I’m getting a greenish yellow tint reflecting so it’s already in the oil is it possible my orings are bad and or injector cups?

Thoughts on this issue with a Perkins engine in a 1974 Massey Ferguson? The tank gravity feeds into the pump. My guess is it is a check valve in the pump. At least there is a petcock on the tank.

... I was trying to locate a fuel system leak test procedure (to address a 51.6% fuel dilution of Port eng. crankcase oil issue) for DD 6-71N (Marine) engines (DDA? documents a procedure for applying air pressure to the cyl. head fuel passages, supply / return pipes / connections and MUI injectors by disconnecting the fuel line at the secondary fuel filter outlet) ... then I came across this video and your use of the dye additive - a revelation! I can see the CAT & Spectroline identifiers, however, so far, I'm not real sure what UV tool would be cost-effective for a one-off t/s mission ... FYI - I've looked up into the two pipe-threaded ports in between the bearings and seals in my mech. fuel pump - not plugged up, nor have they weeped fuel or oil ... I suspect the fuel pipe connections, or, maybe, an injector, however, the engine otherwise seems to run fine (fires on all 6 cyl.'s).

... I found a DD procedure in DD Service Manual 6SE164 MAY 1994, Section 2.0 (Shop Notes - ... ), Pages 17, 18 & 19 ... three fuel leak test methods are outlined, the 1st being observation under the rocker cover of oil puddle presence / weakness / absence (at fuel pipe connectors to head / f.p. nuts to head conn.'s & injectors / f.p. & nut interfaces) following 20-30 min.'s of run time (DD stresses oil puddle inspection as 'key'). The 2nd (engine static) & 3rd (engine running 400-600 RPM [fuel pressure to be regulated higher to 70 PSI by an introduced return line valve]) involving pressurizing to 60-80 PSI with fuel (not air, as per my earlier recollection) ... these latter two methods involve tools I don't own ... which makes my one-off t/s initiative somewhat problematic and less than cost-effective in the scheme of things ... an air pressurization procedure may exist but I don't know where it might be found and / or if it would even be appropriate, should I choose to ad-lib ... I'm liking A,A.'s dye test method more than ever *except* that it requires a running engine (mine has no lube oil in it, at all, as I anticipated further fuel loss / leakage into the crankcase during testing) ... I'm still trying to track down a local (to Vancouver, B.C., Canada) Spectroline supplier (for dye & appropriate UV flashlight tool) ... CAT wants $17.22CAD (+5% +7%) for the 1 oz. bottles of dye ... nearest inventory to me is Spokane, WA ...

Awesome, just finished the AAS at Central Carolina Community College, found out about the CAT program, going to go through it now, I would have never thought about the injector, I thought it would have been bad rings.

+Jay Hoeft Yeah those older mechanical engines like the 3406 and 3300 series could leak through the injection pump. I've also seen the fuel lines leak under the valve cover going to the injectors.

I think this is the problem my diesel truck has. Today the oil pleasure went down. Low oil buzzer came on even dough it was full. And now i think the engine is getting locked.

interesting video, I appear to have diesel in my oil, but the injectors are not under the rocker cover. So the injector I assume in this case can not be the diesel in oil problem.

I have a 1999 Cummins 24v with fuel getting in the oil. I did your dye test, ran motor for 30 seconds and removed the valve cover and the whole thing was glowing green. Which the dye obviously diluted my oil that fast....talked to a major diesel performance shop. They suggested the front seal on VP 44. I replaced it, changed oil, restarted the engine and it is still growing on the dipstick. Just wanted your thoughts. I guess it would be an injector or o-ring on injector? It isn't nearly as obvious as your video. I even ran it without the valve cover and there is no way to tell because the oil is now dyed green. Lemme know your thoughts or any tips or tricks to try next....thank you in advance.

Thanks for making this video! I've been trying to solve this issue with my 3126B, and I've read a bunch of people mentioning the transfer pump as a possible source for the leak. Do you happen to know off hand if the pumps on an 8YL can push fuel into the oil, or does the pump design not really allow for that? I've heard 'it's rare', but I can't tell by the diagrams if it would even be possible, or specifically what to look for when I'm inspecting the pump for it.

+adam7e I have never seen one caused by a 3126 transfer pump, it is possible though. The transfer pump is driven by the back of the HEUI with a little armature. I guess if the seals failed and then sent fuel past the little armature seal, it could leak into the HEUI pump, but my guess is it's one of the injectors.

Thanks man! In the video you mention that the troublesome injector needs to be removed, and replaced. This must mean that this kind of leak is internal, and not caused by failure of the o-rings/seals on the body of the injector?

+adam7e Typically the injector orings seal the fuel rails in the head. If you do this test with the black light and there is any fuel on the injector, meaning it's coming out of the body of the injector, the injector should be replaced. If the leak is just around the base if the injector where the external oring seals the head, then that can be replaced, but on a HEUI engine, 3126 and C7, those external seals keep the HEUI oil sealed as well, so you see an engine oil leak at the oring and not a fuel leak.

If I had an oil leak at the oring in addition to an internal leak within the injector body, might that put oil into my fuel tank? If so, what's the best way to go about inspecting the fuel?

+adam7e An oring seals the fuel rail and the oil rail in the head from each other, so if the oring between rails, which is your center oring on your injectors failed, it would pump oil into your fuel system. The injectors themselves can leak internally and do this as well. If your fuel starts turning black from the oil, then you know you are cross contaminating. If your looking to fix it, you can reseal the injector orings, which isn't too expensive if you do it yourself. Hopefully it's just an oring, if that doesn't fix it you pretty much have to change the injectors as a set. Now you can try calling a Diesel fuel shop and see if they can test HEUI injectors for internal leaks, but as a dealership we don't have a way to test them so we replace them. Hope that helps.

Hello..guys...i have this problem and have replaced alot of parts and spend alot money and lost of time at shop and same issues and alot guess by mechanic shops...like bearing n oil pump etc.........Turn out i replaced #3 injector and 6 injector 0 rings of injector and 3 new filters and fresh oil change cost me about 900usd ..i have cummin isl motor ..2008 kw t800..hope this help..im in la cali..

I've drove several cat applications in different truck manufactures over the past 25 years of driving. looking at an Cat C15 6NZ motor or C15 acert both engines have over 1.2 million on them....really can't afford to rebuild them now. Would you just swapped them out with the same model of the cat engine or do a partial rebuild? Both cat engines are coming from wrecked vehicles with around 700k on them

I would suggest a rebuild if you really need it. An engine swap typically would cost you more. Definitely go with the 6NZ if given the ability to get either.

Hey Adept So whag exactly caises the fuel to leak past the injector up to the cylinder head into the oil? is it worn seals or what exactly? thanks!

+Omar Well there are seals external and internal on the injectors, if you see oil coming out around where the injector inserts into the head then it might just be an oring, if it is the solenoid or body of the injector, then the injector has to be replaced. Just normal wear can cause this and it is a somewhat common problem.

I did that and gues what my heart almost stop due to whole engine being flooded with fuel by four out of the six injectors. And replaced with new oil filters and set of injectors remanufactured. And started let it idle for a while every thing sound ok drove it and oil pressure started dropping in 5miles stoped towed back to the shop and I’m back to circle one

Watch out for cheap Chinese injector nozzles. They work, but won't atomize the fuel well enough and will result in crankcase fuel dilution, much worse if you already have some blowby as the poorly atomized unburnt fuel will leak past the rings and into the crankcase. If you use low quality biodiesel or mix with veg oil it will cause gumming of the rings and extreme blowby.

+james gonzo That is the second request for that this week. I'll try to make that next week's video since it seems there is a lot of interest in that. When my channel was new I made a 25 minutes video about it, but nobody watched it (I had a 5 subscribers then) so I took it down. It wasn't that great if of a video then anyways, but I'll make a better one.

Hello mate I have 10/2005 build BMW 525d with a m57n 2.5 diesel 24v engine . Whilst driving my engine oil pressure warning light came on..I check dipstick thinking it had got low but it was actually a cm or more above max mark. I drained out approx litre or so to get it back level . No more pressure light. Then approx 2 months later same again...oil back upto above max. I completely changed oil this time and it was very black and thin assuming first mix. I was lazy and didn't check my oil as its never needed topoping up. I'm being told that due to my short journeys the car isn't completely the regeneration process fully for df (diesel particulate filter) leaving excess diesel to get through into sump via pistons over time increasing oil level. But your video suggests it's injectors?. Are you familiar with the m57n engine and could help me eliminate cause? Thanks in advance

@@bmwe657er its was unburnt diesel from cars regen cycle not being complete. I changed oil it was fine. Just made sure I did at least 1 long journey a month for dpf to regen

am having a issues where my gmc c6500 my fuel really black like oil black...is possible that my fuel is getting oil??

I thank you for making this video. My question is I have a 3406b and the fuel is mixing with the oil. I pulled valve covers off I see five nozzles with oil on top and one that is clean no oil on it. Could this be my problem?

Did you get it fixed? If so what was the issue? I'm having same issue with my C15 fuel in oil I'll do the dye test, and also just sent in oil sample for confirmation.

@@TolaTrucking yes I got it fixed it was my plungers in my pump. On that c15 one of your injectors got to be leaking. If you take off the valve covers look on the top of each injector they should have oil on top of them. Look for one that doesn't have oil on it and it's clean. That's going to be your problem.

Hi. I have a Cummins B180 euro 2 engine. It has diesel in the oil. Runs perfect and has power. Bypassed the little bleeding hand pump thinking it was the cause seeing that it runs of the cam. The injectors is outside the engine not like your cat video. Could it be the diesel pump? Thanks love your videos.

This all depends on which engine your working on fella. It could be as little as a mechanical fuel pump.

If it was mechanical you'd still be looking at the injectors with the same diagnostic process the only thing different would be where its leaking at the injector. (Feed or return leak possibly caused by a combustion leak.)

Working on a 3406e same problem fuel in oil. Runs great, no smoke, or starting issues. issues . Did the same test no luck transfer pump next?

How about coolant in oil, and coolant draining from engine, and leaking out from the exhaust with or without engine running

+zeer365 Sounds like a cracked head or head gasket most likely. The air compressor can also fail and put coolant into the engine. Typically if you have coolant coming out of the exhaust it is had related. Check your precooler and then do a bottle test as well. I have a video how to do a bottle test, it is very easy to do.

Does anyone knows why i got diesel in my oil i did oil change and still rising my engine is shiny now lol but it still gets some diesel in my oil injectors are repaired my piston got good compression do you all think it may be my direct injection pump ?
