The Pontiac Fiero may be the butt of many automotive jokes, but believe it or not, the original designers had high hopes for America’s first mass-produced, mid-engined sports car. Unfortunately, the accountants won, and, well, we know how it went.
But what if it hadn’t? Could ingenuity and know-how turn the maligned Fiero into a proper sports car? We hit up a Speed District Track day to find out.

People for some reason hate on the Fiero. It has a winning race history and perfect balance and design. I just do not get all the hate on these beautiful cars...

Shit GM parts grab engines and mechanicals, poor execution. Back in 2000 I test drove one, don't remember the year but it was a V6 so maybe the 2.8? I just remember it had a lot of bottom end for the size of the car but the seating position was horrible, the interior was crappy, it understeered like a demon, and everything was soft - it felt like what you'd think a Buick would feel like. If they'd put in a Quad Four as a base engine and given it just tigther steering and suspension it would've been nice. . In the end I bought an 86 MR-2. Also (and this sounds stupid) but the MR-2 had a lot more trunk space be cause the Fiero didn't have a a usable forward trunk IIRC. You can tell the difference between the two because an MR-2 weighs ~600lb less (2200 vs 2800)

Clifford Bradford I see where your coming from but GM tied the hands of the designers of the car. That's why it was built from numerous GM car parts. But the fiero is the perfect base for a build. You can put any GM motor you want it. The fiero GTP and GTU cars where very successful on the track. With a little work they are perfect track cars.

The last model year of the Fiero (like this one) is solid. If it hadn't taken GM four years to ditch the Chevette suspension, its story would be very different today. Today, you can upgrade the earlier ones with aftermarket suspension parts that really turn it into the car it was always meant to be.

How to kill a channel in 3 months, with Chris Harris: 1st. - Demand a pay wall, so you can pay insurance for drifting around in exotics and shoot overproduced videos of it. 2nd. - Let my colleagues deal with the backlash from alienated fans. 3rd. - Announce on Twitter that you're doing your own thing now, for free, because the pay wall didn't work. 4th. - ???? 5th. - Get treated like a god in the comment section.

+Steven Snyder Yyyyup! Worked for a pair of GMC/Pontiac/Cadillac/BMW and Chev./Mazda/Mercedes/Jaguar dealerships owned by the same family (across the street from each other) and while I was there.... those Cyclones, Tyhoons and, later, 3rd gen. Twin Turbo RX7's were sold - 3 vehicles that carved deep impressions into my psyche for various reasons but all for their acceleration... just at various RPM ranges and torque availability! Scared the 'bejesus' out of me when the twin turbos kicked in on the 3rd gen. Mazda RX-7 at its screaming RPM range and ....dared to think how long I could grip onto the steering wheel and shift fast enough the transmission lever before braking, wishing for more road at the same time - as if it were a hybrid revving experience of some four-wheeled motorcycle... And the Cyclone... Well, I mashed the accelerator pedal and I could barely see the road over the dash or hood while the surrealism of the vehicle of its size squatting, pulling at all 4 corners during a godly duration to ~ 75 mph .... don't even get me started on drying these off from the dealer car wash up the street, driving them in a 'round the way trip' to their position to the front row street display lineup for boosting the dealership sales...

not only did he miss that 4.3 liter Vortec, but, as for GM's offerings, the Quad 4 (H.O.) 4-cylinder had high specific output numbers (output per cylinder/cubic inch displacement) for its day through nearly a decade+plus I believe, maybe even beyond the Ecotec torque and hp that replaced it.... 180 hp manufactured stock & proven 250 hp Turbo by engineers and beyond by tuners... eventually was used in land speed record breaking in the Oldsmobile Aerotech before they ramped up into the Oldsmobile Aurora V8

@@specialksplaytime2385 I was waiting for the stock engine to die and it recently lost its water pump so it's definitely time to start modifying it (though I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did as it was leaking every fluid possible when I got it). I have just been restoring little pieces of it little by little in the meantime. Probably going to go with a Supercharged 3800 though. It doesn't sound as good as the LS4 but much less of a pain to get into the Fiero.

They used to race Fieros in the IMSA series back when they races were broadcast on TNN. And some people every converted them to front engine and went drag racing with them. I used to own a 2M4 and it was a blast to drive, even more fun if you put the money into the suspension and did a proper set. Stock it had NO roll bars and would do 360s in the rain if you stood on the brakes.

the feiro, a scrappy little car with a cursed history but a very dedicated fan base. Much like the beaten puppy in a shelter the people who, for whatever reason, fall in love with the feiro really love it. Small, Light, and not packing much in the trunk can really bring out a driver in any situation. This car isnt fast but its quick and isnt scared to show it. If Initial D was based in america im 100% sure this car would replace the E 86 as the under dog car that teaches its driver. That being said its no drifter. The weight in its rear end and its extreme lack of power would make it hard to drift. But remember cause something is hard doesnt mean its impossible.

So retaliation is the answer? You watching an end-result at your leisure and "liking it" versus everything that goes into the production of a show, the hours the toil the red tape etc. is not a 1:1 comparison. /Drive mishandled the transition to the payment scheme, so fans interpret this selfishly as a sense of betrayal, how dare I pay for content, I'm entitled to consume for free, because. My original comment stands true. I've gone so far as to suggest offering a la carte payments for each episode as a suggestion. In the meantime I resubscribe when there's enough content built up to consume.

A 5-speed V6 1988 model GT that I never had enough seat time in to understand it driving characteristics which drove me to further curiosity whether I could come to understand it and harness it... always wondered whether I could have mastered its handling characteristics... If it had only been produced long enough - a year or two - to see ABS braking followed by stability control and the more potent supercharged Pontiac V6 or turbocharged Buick V6 power plants that were already a drop-in power plant at the time the vehicle ceased production

You guys are trying to make a serious contender out of this Fiero thing and we can't have anything that will get Corvette owners snippy, just ask them jamooks over at Buick what we did to thems guys GN(X) cars we'll kill a whole damn body line if we don't like whats it is yous guys is dooin'..... grumble, grumble" It boggles the mind as the Fiero was really coming into its own in 1988 with its new suspension and a blown GN motor or supercharged 3800 would have been crazy stupid fun in one of these. What a damn shame. P.S. RIP GM G-body. You are still missed.... but I digress.

Matt Farah, the '88 is the only year Fiero that has the original PONTIAC designed, though Lotus inspired, chassis, that was canned by Corporate because it was too good for their buddy, the Chevrolet group(84's thru 87's Fieros used generic off the shelf econocar pieces). My setup 88 "notchie" is a playful puppy, which is more fun to play with than my Boxster, and WAY cheaper to feed. As wonderful as the Boxster is, I'm selling it, and putting the money into my Pontiac, and my next project... a 67'-69' Corvair Monza.

I had an '85 Fiero SE with the V6 and a manual transmission. I loved that car 'till the warranty wore out and shit everything went to fuck on it. Clutch, fuel pump, water pump. I still miss that car.

I want one but I would like to try swapping in an Aluminum ECOTECH 2.4 into it. Optional turbo. That would give it more power than the 2.8 V6 that was available while keeping it fairly balanced and inline with it's original design dynamic. I have scene all kinds of engine swaps on these cars. The 3.4 is interesting because it is a forgotten engine. GM Made the 3.4 to compete with Fords SHO back in the day but it suffered some quirks initially and none of the cars they put it in ever beat the Taurus in performance or sales. Not a bad engine just not enough for a Lumina. Probably awesome in a Fiero.

GM didn't have a transaxel that could handle the full potential of the 3.4 doch motor so they detuned it to 220 or so . That motor had a lot more potential for HP and Torque .

the Fiero was a good start for someone that had a low budget and wanted something that handled. yo9u can squeeze much more out of the six and get some serious hp more in the 4 to 500 with some help of a hair drier.. it's pontiac'sm Edsel! LOL

I'm sad that I won't get to see the full content of this (and others) car. I'm not paying the subscription because I think it isn't worth it just yet, but I'm not going to watch it illegally either, I like and admire this people too much for that. Like I said, I'm just sad.

220 out of a v6? That's supposed to be a lot? Is that bone stock numbers or fully built numbers? I hate to break it to the owner but a bone stock k20 will put out more power and rev higher.

Can you do anything cool with an ironduke or is it more worthwhile to swap it for a GM V6 or a Japanese 4?
@bryantcastles3062
@bryantcastles3062 7 жыл бұрын
iron duke is a 2.5l four cylinder. I'm pretty sure. your best bet would be to go with the 2.6 v6 if you wanting to go stock. or go with a 2.8 head with 3.4 block. that's what I'm doing. you could do a 3.4 DOHC swap to. all depends on your budget and what your wanting out of it

I built a real nice fiero back in 1990. Had the 2.8 built with alot more power. Lots of head and intake work with a stock bottom end. Sadly I was only 19 and drove like a idiot. Drove it off the side of a mountain in upstate ny. I was fine but the car was totalled. But hey I really wanted a 914gt and have a really nice one today.

1993 3.4 DOHC V6 from a Chevy Lumina, Getrag 282 transmission from a V6 Fiero. Open diff. No need for an LSD at this power level.
