Thank you for this video. I've always used this method for my thumb releases but had never considered reversing or removing the trigger stud. I really think that will give me even more consistency in my thumb placement. I also want to thank you for the Bowmar Nose Button. I have one on each of my bows and I love the improved consistency in my anchor point. I recommend them to everyone.

I used to try a Hinge Release and my group was great when I did it right. However, I always had an uneasy feeling when drawing the bow, so I went back to the Thumb Release with the bad habits and target panic. After watching your video I really realized how important a surprise shoot is. I have the Stan Shooter and have it set up like in the video. Every shot is now a surprise shot. I am thrilled because unfortunately I also had target panic and it is completely gone. Thank you very much, the tip was very helpful.

Got out today, and set up my Stan Perfex as described. Didn’t cut down the barrel, but have the shaft in the more central position (short shaft, center hole, left side of activation lever, and up/forward as pictured). Using back mucles at full draw, adding tension, and rotating the pinkey/ring finger works TERRIFIC! It really does feel like your shooting a tension release, and it forces you into having good follow-through on the shot. Thank you for putting this out there. It’s going to help me a lot!

I switched from a trigger release to a thumb release. was shown this method and loved it. get the surprise shot of a hinge release while having the safety of a thumb release. was quite a few years ago and in my area, we don't get all the archery big brands a plenty, so most of us had never even seen a hinge release with safety. this was (and is imo) the best option.

Thank you so much. I watched your first video that touched on this and have been trying to engage my carter wise choice this way since. I’ve had problems with my button (too much pressure or hitting it accidentally)or collapsing my shot and punching the trigger. Knob is coming off and I’m going outside. This is truly an amazing video with a wealth of information in it. Thanks again for taking the time to share.

I think I have watched this video 4 times in the past year. Good reminders of what I am trying to achieve, regardless or what release I use. I was using a hinge and getting good success, but when that hinge failed 3 weeks ago, I had a thumb trigger to use while my hinge undergoes a warranty replacement. I tied my personal best because I had the information on how to shoot a thumb trigger like a hinge. I may not do it just like Josh does, but it is close enough to get a good surprise shot. Without this surprise shot, I would not be scoring as well as I am.

This was really interesting. I have just come back from practice and I stumbled across your video. I have a thumb release and I can give this method a try. I shot olympic style recurve for years. This method you are describing might feel more familiar to me than trying to find a way to squeeze the thumb trigger while applying back tension. Thanks for this, I will give it a try.

I found this video while icing a huge welt on my forearm after a misfire with my nock2it release. I removed the barrel trigger from the nock2it release and when on target, slowly rotated my pinky back while at full draw. It works great! There is now much less chance of an accidental misfire and it also successfully reduces target panic. Nice tips Joel. Thank You!

I suffered from target panic by using for some time a thumb style release, a Carter Chocolate four finger configured the stock way. Then I used a Carter Honey for quite some time in practice and discovered the surprise release. My accuracy improved, but more importantly I no longer suffered from really badly “pulled” shots. Maybe I just didn’t adjust the Honey properly but that release is almost too surprising. Just took the thumb barrel my Spot Hogg Whipper Snapper and tried it as a “hinge”. Worked fine and felt better than the Honey. I would definitely recommend using a Honey as a first step, and then go barrelless.

Pin does not have to be in the middle for the shot to hit extra middle.... put the pin where you want it and let it float because it always will... do not start and stop the pull.... pull through continuously and your subconscious will fire the bow at the right time. Stare at the spot and pull through the shot

Starting and stopping the process to make the shot go off will create target panic. Let your pin float and let yourself unconsciously bring your pin back to target. Your only focus should be on the process to make that shot go off. Our brains can't do both at once.

I just got a Carter Chocolate lite. I do not understand why bow shop tell us to get a wrist rocket when this works so much better. It did take a few days but groups consistently down to 2” @ 40 yards. For me that’s a big improvement from plate size to 2”. So thanks you !!! try this it works. Back tensions try this it’s good way of thinking about it. Lifted your arm straight in front of you, then push it straight back. So your arm gets short in front of you. Practice that then go to shooting stands and do the same movement. It works!!

Thanks for the video. The more I research the more I realize that you do not have to use true back tension and there are more pros punching their thumb or index finger than I ever thought. I watched a Lancaster archery tournament where the winner or one of the top finishers was punching his thumb. And Levi Morgan doesn’t believe true back tension is best to activate a release, but I’m sure there are some lofty shooters that think otherwise. The principals you are teaching are understood and are regularly applied in the archery world as you mentioned, but you still have to find what works for you. There are no absolutes when it comes to release technique.

Seriously, hell yes! About 4 weeks set my Wise Choice up short and sweet to get this effect. Folks, when you do this and make yourself perform the execution properly- this flat out works. There's no brain waves bouncing back and forth to activate the release and INTERFERE with your focus- which should be on the exact spot you want the arrow to hit. All I do is just PULL THROUGH THE SHOT and keep my feeble mind on the target/dot/12 ring. It actually takes less mind time to do than using my Carter Total Control which is a fantastic true hinge release. This release set up is going to be awesome when I'm shooting the wild hogs. More ability to focus on that pigs kill zone. 👍👍🏹🏹🐗🐗🐗🐗🐗

My son and I are brand new into archery. We both use a trigger release but I really want to try a different release but can’t afford to buy one if it e we not work out for me. The only option I have is to go to the nearest big box store or pro shop to try out different ones. I’m pretty sure I have target panic or whatever it’s called. With this whole Coronavirus crap going on I can’t justify with myself to drive to Tacoma where there is a huge possibility of exposing myself to anything. Is there a company out there that sells products and will let you return the product if it don’t work well for me? I’d much rather order one then have to go be around a bunch of people. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

you stated you like the STAN release... try the Heavy Metal Perflex LONG neck I use the X-large GREAT fit in the hand love the weight..will be moving my button all the way over and switching (testing) to the small button after I cut it in half. :-) currently using the big button and longest stalk to get it into the crease of my thumb base. Your suggested position is VERY interesting tnx
